Chinese TV features blackface performers in New Year's gala

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese state TV included dancers in blackface portraying Africans in a holiday gala for the second time in three years, prompting criticism online, as Asia welcomed the Year of the Ox with muted festivities amid travel curbs to contain renewed coronavirus outbreaks.

The “African Song and Dance” performance Thursday came at start of the Spring Festival Gala, one of the world’s most-watched TV programs. It included Chinese dancers in African-style costumes and dark face makeup beating drums.

The five-hour annual program, which state TV has said in the past is seen by as many as 800 million viewers, also included tributes to nurses, doctors and others who fought the coronavirus pandemic that began in central China in late 2019.

Festivities for the holiday, normally East Asia's busiest tourism season, are muted after China, Vietnam, Taiwan and other governments tightened travel curbs and urged the public to avoid big gatherings following renewed virus outbreaks.

China's ruling Communist Party tries to promote an image of unity with African nations as fellow developing economies. But China Central Television has faced criticism over using blackface to depict African people in past New Year broadcasts.

On Twitter, Black Livity China, a group for people of African descent who work in or with China, called the broadcast “extremely disappointing.” It noted CCTV’s 2018 Spring Festival Gala featured performers in blackface with a monkey.

“We cannot stress enough the impact scenes such as these have on African and Afro-diasporic communities living in China,” the group said.

Elsewhere in China, Buddhist and Daoist temples that usually are packed with holiday worshippers were closed. Streets in major cities were largely empty.

Visitors gathered outside the locked gates of the Tibetan-style Lama Temple on Beijing’s north side to burn incense and pray.

Ji Jianping, who wore a jacket and face mask in red, the traditional color of good fortune, said she and her family skipped visiting their hometown in the northern province of Shanxi due to the pandemic.

“I wish for safety and health, as well as happiness for my family,” said Ji, 62.

The government’s appeal to China's public to avoid travel is denting spending on tourism and gifts. But economists say the overall impact might be limited if factories, shops and factories keep operating instead of taking their usual two-week break.

The Commerce Ministry said it found 48 million more people in Chinese cities planned to celebrate where they live instead of traveling. Departures from Beijing’s two major airports were down 75% from last year on Wednesday, the Chinese capital’s government reported.

In Taiwan, merchants said this year's sales are up 10%-20% because Taiwanese celebrated at home with family dinners instead of traveling abroad.

“Business this year is good. We have even more people,” said a sausage vendor in the capital, Taipei, who would give only his surname, Tsai. “People stay home and prepare food for year-end dinner to share with friends and family.”

This is the thread where white people pretend not to be racists by shitting on Asians who aren't demeaning black people in the way that whitey's comfortable with.

I can say that because I'm better than all of you.

JK, it's just contempt.

by Anonymousreply 7February 13, 2021 7:27 AM

They refuse to be as miserable as the West is about basically everything, and the West can’t stand it. So Western media can only nitpick China through its limited cultural lens.

Coverage like this reeks of American public university education: zero perspective or nuance.

Someone’s on an upswing. Someone else is experiencing a miserable decline and stews in insecurity and resentment.

[quote] They know exactly what they're doing, and they're doing it on purpose.

I seriously doubt it. When I lived in Japan, there was blackface comedy on tv quite often. No one had any idea that it was wrong. Of course they should have, because they have their own minorities who are treated very badly, and there is a lot of ignorance about black people. Still blackface doesn't have the same meaning as it does here. It's typically American to assume the rest of the world is familiar with debates about blackface in the US.

by Anonymousreply 11February 13, 2021 7:43 AM

Most Americans don’t understand such nuance, R10. They’re simply too limited to comprehend that America isn’t the world.

by Anonymousreply 12February 13, 2021 7:44 AM

All over Asia, dark skin is considered inferior, unsightly and unwanted. In Arabic-speaking countries, a person with dark skin is called "abid", slave. Skin-lightening products are very popular from Bombay to Beijing, from Hanoi to Hong Kong.

by Anonymousreply 13February 13, 2021 7:45 AM

The Asians in Asia never slaughtered and enslaved blacks. They don’t owe anything to blacks. Why do they have to follow whites rules ?

by Anonymousreply 14February 13, 2021 7:48 AM

Americans protecting their own racism. That's why blackface is somehow a hate crime, but white face is irrelevant.

Exactly. Minstrel shows and blackface is a very American thing. The Europeans, Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, Canadians don’t have this history and to them it’s just makeup. To scold other cultures through an American woke lens is very asinine and problematic. Do better.

Black face, girl face, when will it end?

by Anonymousreply 42February 13, 2021 9:36 AM

Years ago, in grad school, I lived with a Chinese biochemist. I'll never forget him describing someone in his lab: "He is the smartest black person I've ever met!"

I also had a Korean friend, quite loudly in public, tell me that "Africans have lower IQs that whites and Asians."

And, now that I'm thinking of it, I once spoke to a Chinese woman who happily told me how much she hated the Japanese, because, and I quote, "They are short and ugly. And their tongues are too short so they can't speak English."

I would say that saying racist things is less taboo in Asian cultures.

by Anonymousreply 43February 13, 2021 9:54 AM

What's the big deal. It is not like anyone will do anything. All liberal media is in China's pocket.

by Anonymousreply 44February 13, 2021 10:00 AM

Americans seem to not understand that blackface doesn't have the same meaning everywhere (even in some european countries things are changing specially because the black ppopulation is way bigger now).

There are a lot of cultural things that are very different from country to country and that doesn't change even when there's a clear american cultural dominance

by Anonymousreply 45February 13, 2021 10:03 AM

But I will add at r43, I think another interesting dynamic is face.

I have a number of Chinese friends (living in the US), and by and large, I take what they say about China with a grain of salt. I don't think they outright lie. But there is a great tendency to save face and to present China as better (not sure that is the right word) than it is. Or, more benign, I should say. They are loath to disparage China to Americans.

I've asked about discrimination against ethnic minorities, and Han privilege, etc. I've never really gotten a straight answer, because they largely frame it as a place with little to no racism or discrimination. But then, I think the Uyghurs would disagree, as would certain ethnic minorities in the east. Also, iirc, Muslims in China can't join the CCP because the CCP is officially atheist.

by Anonymousreply 46February 13, 2021 10:05 AM

R45 I don't think painting yourself in darker color means blackface. If a white woman is a Diana ross fan and wants to dress as her in Halloween, she could use makeup that is a darker tone. But that's not racism.

by Anonymousreply 47February 13, 2021 10:14 AM

This is what Chinese people find funny. They have absolutely no filter when it comes to racism.

I believe they also have the "talent/variety" shows on tv featuring foreigners dressing up like Chinese to compete for the best, can you imagine the uproar of white people trying to look like Chinese in the US?

by Anonymousreply 50February 13, 2021 11:56 AM

r48 Lol. You can bring better videos than that fake one. A 'Korean' elderly woman said "Ah, you came?" to the person she thought she was expecting, only to be shocked at a complete stranger of a difference race. But even that looks scripted for a joke, with such a 'convincing' acting from the grandma..

[quote] There's so much racism in this thread

Mainly coming from orientals who are strangely defending this brand of oriental racism.

I guess what's good for them, isn't good for anyone else.

Because you just KNOW that the minute white people started making pretend "slant eyes" or saying "ching chong ching chong," they would be SCREAMING bloody fucking murder!! You Lacist! You Lacist!

But when it comes to orientals making fun of blacks, it's all EXCUSES.

"You don't understand their culture."

"I don't see black face."

"They don't have the same history as Americans."

Excuses, excuses, excuses.

So now I guess whenever I make fun of orientals, I'll make the same excuses.

As it was said in Mommie Dearest, "The sword... cuts both ways."
