I mean, WHO thought "Let's pair Dolly Parton with James Woods"? Who thought that was a good idea, especially for a romantic comedy??
Dolly was cute in it, though.

Movie audiences clearly didn't.

They were trying to graft together Dolly's fan base to James's. It didn't work any better than when they tried to combine Sylvester Stallone and Dolly's fans in 1984 with Rhinestone.

The same people who paired her with Sylvester Stallone.

The only reason anybody remembers this movie is because it provided the framework for "Frasier."

“I went to SCREW U!”

She went for some of the worst projects imaginable, but I'm sure she's not easy to cast.

I think at this point in her career she was trying to reinvent herself to be something other than a country singer. She was good in "9 To 5" and "Best Little Whorehouse". She was miscast in "Steel Magnolias".

What a strange pairing

Yet I loved the Truvy character.

Yeah I like Dolly in pretty much everything

Truvy is really supposed to be an Earth mother type. Margo Martindale created the role on stage. Dolly was very glamourous. The movie version was wildly miscast and strayed from the heart of the play.

I thought Dolly was great in Steel Magnolias. I wish she did more movies.

It was a box office flop. It was like a poor man’s “9 to 5.” The whole thing was on YouTube last year - might still be up if you want to watch it.

Who ever thought it was a great idea to pair James Woods in a movie with anybody?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 13, 2021 3:36 AM |
James Woods in a romantic comedy is a non-starter no matter who his costar is.

I actually really enjoy this film. Now, Unlikly Angle is shit!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 13, 2021 8:50 AM |
I'd rather forget the film.

"Big Dick meets Big Tits"

Well, who looked at James Woods’ face and thought making him into a romantic lead was a good idea? Never understood his appeal.

You said you were kidding R4, but the Dr. Mary episode kinda had some of the framework of the Dr. Shirley business from Straight Talk, like the basic plot of someone not a qualified psychiatrist offering advice on the radio and being referred to as Doctor.

R11 she IS very earthy though - she has a great warmth and appeal that carries her through all of her movie roles even if she’s not a trained actress.

Always love me some Dolly, and it certainly was a fun movie, but one does need to spend disbelief to enjoy it. For instance, the FCC would probably have suspended the radio station’s license in real life, and Dolly and Griffin Dunne’s characters would probably have been brought up in charges for perpetrating a fraud (Dolly impersonating a psychologist), but that wouldn’t have made for a successful romantic comedy happy ending, I guess. I think that Dolly was better foot with James Woods than he had been with other Bury Reynolds or (gasp!) Sylvester Stallone.

R13, even the “Straight Talk” theme song, you could tell Dolly was totally going for a “Nine to Five” vibe when she was writing it: same horn section, same infectious melody, same hooky chorus.

A better fit? Autocorrect has gotten really weird.

This sounds like a documentary on the making of Lucy/Mame.
