Hateful towards her grandchildren. Overly judgmental. Was she bitter because she had to live in that house with all those children? Was she envious that she didn't have the luxury of the Baldwin Sisters? Why was she such a sourpuss?
Poor, Christian, lack of good snatch.

It was because no one let her rub oil into the leaves of the rubber plants on Walton's Mountain. It would turn anyone bitter..

I never watched it when I was a kid even though I watched "Little House on the Prairie," which was so similar in subject matter (i.e., intensely dramatic events in the lives of a large family of good but poor people in a rural American setting). I think it was because "The Waltons" was from an adults' perspective while "Little House" was much more from a kids' perspective. Also "Little House" had the Olesons, who always brought so much humor to the show--it always seemed like the Waltons had no humor, just endless drama.
At the time i did not find Richard Thomas attractive because his gigantic facial mole distracted me so much, but he seems so beautiful to me now when I see old clips of the series.

I think that was because Earl Hamner Jr had control in the show. It was his life story and he probably didn't allow much diversion from his viewpoint. Little House made huge changes to the story.

The show was Depression porn.

It would be interesting if they remade it now. Part of the appeal back in the day was that so many adults at the time were from either the Silent Generation (born in 1928-1945) or the tail end of the Greatest Generation (1901-1927), and they had lived through the Depression and could deeply identify with the Waltons' economic problems.

Back in the 1970s, we were in our own Depression.
