White House says staffer TJ Ducklo has been suspended for one week

President Biden’s communications team says it won’t be firing a staffer who threatened and made misogynistic comments to a reporter last month.

Vanity Fair reported Friday that White House deputy press secretary TJ Ducklo told Politico reporter Tara Palmeri, “I will destroy you,” in an effort to kill a story on his relationship with a different reporter. Ducklo also made misogynistic comments and said Palmeri was covering the relationship only because she was jealous.

According to the report, White House press secretary Jen Psaki, White House communications director Kate Bedingfield and Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn “acknowledged that Ducklo’s handling of the call with Palmeri was inappropriate” but also “took aim at Palmeri by accusing her of breaking an off-the-record agreement with Ducklo.”

“TJ Ducklo has apologized to the reporter, with whom he had a heated conversation about his personal life,” Psaki tweeted Friday afternoon. “He is the first to acknowledge this is not the standard of behavior set out by the President. In addition to his initial apology, he has sent the reporter a personal note expressing his profound regret. With the approval of the White House Chief of Staff, he has been placed on a one-week suspension without pay. In addition, when he returns, he will no longer be assigned to work with any reporters at Politico.”

While the comments occurred last month, the White House announced the suspension only after the publication of the Vanity Fair story. When asked about the delay at Friday’s briefing, Psaki said they were dealing with Politico privately and that’s what they thought was appropriate at the time.

Psaki was also asked about the fact that Ducklo would still be working with female staffers, but she did not directly answer the question, reiterating that the conduct was unacceptable and that she and others had talked to Ducklo about his conduct.

“I take this very seriously. I’m a woman, obviously, but I’ve been in this town working in press and communications for nearly 20 years, and I think many of you know and have worked with me closely,” Psaki said, “and many of you know many people in this building, including the president, who take these allegations quite seriously.”

Psaki noted that Ducklo made the remarks while discussing a story that involved his personal life.

On his first day in office, Biden addressed hundreds of political appointees at their swearing-in and said, “I’m not joking when I say this: If you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands or buts.”

Palmeri is not Ducklo’s colleague, so his actions would not technically qualify under the president’s pledge, but the deputy press secretary’s comments would at least violate the spirit of the message. When asked about this claim, Psaki reiterated that she did not find the conduct acceptable but that the one-week suspension was severe, despite its falling short of Biden’s promise of an immediate termination.

Psaki also stated that the president was not involved in the decision, which was made by her with the permission of White House chief of staff Ron Klain.

Sounds like Ducklo needs to go if he has a Trumpian personal life.

He had cancer, but not terminal.

TJ was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in December 2019, but he seems to be going strong.

I'm sure that if someone is trolling him, he has ZERO patience for it. Not with this cancer hanging over his head.

It amazes me how many mid-level aides and politicos really think they have actual power. I'm going to destroy you? Cringe.

Aside from that, he fucked up but no one died and he didn't do anything illegal. I think there's room for a compassionate approach even if the guy is a dick. Not a doc but Stage IV lung cancer sounds terminal. I would have liked the suspension to be a little longer and even indefinite but kept him officially employed so he receives healthcare. At the very least, this is someone who likely supports healthcare for his fellow citizens. Not Republicans who try to cut healthcare but are happy to benefit from their gold plated healthcare coverage.

I know taking taking a stance somewhere inbetween Trumpian do nothing to fire his ass won't go down well in the Twitterverse. But I think Biden will take his lumps on this one rather than leave a guy dying from cancer without healthcare. And just think how it will look down the road when this furor will have be forgotten and buried by a million other scandals. A couple of years from now, we'll get a People magazine cover story of how heartless Biden turfed out a cancer victim. Exclusive interviews with his family and friends describing his last days without any healthcare.

by Anonymousreply 12February 12, 2021 9:04 PM

Here’s the timeline

He starts dating an Axios reporter covering the Biden campaign, neither reveal their relationship and conflict of interest

Politico gets wind and starts writing an article about it, they contact Ducklo for comment and he threatens the reporter

Politico gets scooped by People who reveals the relationship anyway

Politico starts to raise hell about ducklo’s comments

The politico reporter is a deplorable and is very antagonistic towards the Biden WH so this in part was for revenge

[quote] The politico reporter is a deplorable and is very antagonistic towards the Biden WH so this in part was for revenge

I had a feeling that was the case.

Deplorables are the only ones low enough to do something like that.

by Anonymousreply 14February 12, 2021 9:08 PM

R6 In what conceivable way is it personal? Show your working.

The Vanity Fair article lays out what happened:

[quote]The confrontation began on Inauguration Day, January 20, after Palmeri, a coauthor of Politico’s Playbook, contacted McCammond for comment while one of her male colleagues left a message for Ducklo, according to the sources. Ducklo subsequently called a Playbook editor to object to the story, but was told to call the Playbook reporters with his concerns. But instead of calling the male reporter who initially contacted him, Ducklo tried to intimidate Palmeri by phone in an effort to kill the story. “I will destroy you,” Ducklo told her, according to the sources, adding that he would ruin her reputation if she published it.

[quote]During the off-the-record call, Ducklo made derogatory and misogynistic comments, accusing Palmeri of only reporting on his relationship—which, due to the ethics questions that factor into the relationship between a journalist and White House official, falls under the purview of her reporting beat—because she was “jealous” that an unidentified man in the past had “wanted to fuck” McCammond “and not you.” Ducklo also accused Palmeri of being “jealous” of his relationship with McCammond. (Palmeri had no prior relationship or communication with McCammond before calling her to report on the Playbook item, which was a story that she was assigned and had not independently pursued.)

His actions were utterly indefensible, and the fact he wasn't fired is shocking. Especially given that

[quote]“I am not joking when I say this: If you are ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot. No ifs, ands, or buts,” Biden said during a virtual swearing-in of appointees on his first day in the White House.

Everything is not black and white.

This reporter was trolling him. Besides, TJ is NOT the story here. It's Biden's White House, not TJ Ducklo's White House.

So why in the fuck is Politico trying to dig up dirt on TJ?

Because they're asshole cunts. That's why.

by Anonymousreply 21February 12, 2021 9:22 PM

[quote]This reporter was trolling him

How, exactly, was she trolling him? She didn't even contact him in the first place. And Politico didn't dig up any dirt. TJ (and what fucking adult goes around calling themselves fucking TJ? What kind of frat fuck are we talking about here?) called a Politico reporter and willingly handed over a ton of dirt himself.

by Anonymousreply 22February 12, 2021 9:24 PM

R16 JEN Palmieri is a talking head I see often on MSNBC, I am unsure of her title or position.

TARA Palmeri is the reporter in question. I didn’t know she was a deplorable, but it does seem this existed on some personal level. One remark I read is that Ducklo tried to dismiss her interest in the story as Tara being jealous that a different pol expressed interest in Alexi McCammond and not Tara.

McCammond always struck me as somewhat fake. Like a sorority girl who always wanted to be in the news. Is it worth noting she was supposedly engaged to someone else in early 2020?

Not saying I don’t think Ducklo SHOULD be fired but people need to leave President Biden out of it. Psaki is the one who should be catching flack for not handling this better.

I couldn’t care less about the phone call or some high school level jealousy bullshit. That’s not news.

The man has stage 4 lung cancer at age 32. Stage 4 is terminal. Even if you go into remission briefly, it gets you. It is terminal.

I don't know if any of you have been managers, but I have, and I would not have the heart to fire someone with terminal cancer — especially when it's based on hearsay and questionable ethical conduct by a reporter.

Remember we just had a PRESIDENT who disclosed national security secrets to the Russians in the Oval Office with no consequence, committed blatant human rights violations and attempted election fraud.

I agree that the bar has to be hugely raised from the Trump admin, but this terminally ill man doesn't need to be a sacrificial lamb.

A 27-year-old White House reporter finds love with a 32-year-old press official who is dying of cancer.

The reporter asked her editors to reassign her immediately. She was reassigned.

So what. Get perspective.

Meanwhile: Republican officials are A-OK with the potential overthrow of our government and a mob that wanted to capture and murder our elected officials, including Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi.

by Anonymousreply 56February 13, 2021 6:30 AM

R56 So you can't provide any examples of the hearsay and questionable ethical conduct then?

And you're the one making up shit. That makes you the troll.

by Anonymousreply 57February 13, 2021 6:32 AM

The hearsay is that TJ said he would "destroy" a Politico reporter for reporting their relationship, R57.

It's particularly suspect because it was reported by Tara Palmeri, who is right-leaning and edits a gossip newsletter for Politico.

There is also the issue that Palmeri allegedly violated an off-the-record agreement of some kind, which journalists just do not do.

But TJ has been suspended and won't interact with Politico in the future, per Jen Psaki. Problem solved, in my mind and those of most reasonable people.

by Anonymousreply 58February 13, 2021 6:36 AM

There is no one in D.C. who hasn't said "I will destroy you" in some professional context.

He fucked up, massively. Trying to pretend otherwise is just a denial of facts. And as for reasonable - so when Biden said he'd fire staffers if they treated colleagues with disrespect, was he being unreasonable?

And Palmer saying she is a woman means nothing. Many women in the last administration didn't speak up when there was aggressive and sexist behaviour in staffers around them. It isn't about being a woman, it is about being a woman who is prepared to take a stand against that kind of behaviour and Palmer clearly is not that kind of woman. I really hate the hypocrisy - since it was a republican woman who was victimized it is acceptable. Just really disappointing to see.

I hate politics in general - this kind of nonsense and hypocrisy and the complete lack of ethics in any politician or party is disheartening. Both parties are fine with treating others badly, as long as it is them doing the action. Too bad she wasn't willing to take a stand against bad behaviour. Acceptance of threatening and misogynistic behaviour also means women on her own team who might experience workplace harassment or aggressive and sexist behaviour like this really can't speak up when they know it is tolerated by the higher ups. Just really disappointing.

I had an exchange this week with a White House comms person who was a total dick. I was honestly really surprised and disappointed. I haven't forgotten that right after his swearing in, Biden told his cabinet on camera that if he ever sees any of them treat their staff poorly, he will fire them on the spot. "I'm not kiddin'!" he said. And this person I exchanged emails with (staff, not an appointee) was a real jerk. It sort of dimmed my exuberance for the leadership, honestly.

[quote]This reporter was trolling him.

I don't think she was, she wasn't assigned to speak with Ducklo when Politico was working on their article, she was talking with Ducklo's girlfriend from Axios. Ducklo still called Palmieri to threaten her.

My concern, after reading Palmieri's tweets, is how Politico is so certain she's telling the truth about the phone call? It sounds like Biden's press staff questioned that as well.

Politico is partly upset because Ducklo went to People Magazine so they would get the story first and softball it, which Politico was embarrassed by, so you can assume that they didn't go hard on Ducklo in part because this is petty revenge. Some of it is Palmieri can't be trusted, and also Ducklo has cancer.

I mean, I get people saying Biden said he'd have a no-tolerance policy, but this particular situation is complicated, despite what the Biden haters say.

by Anonymousreply 89February 13, 2021 3:32 PM

R89 Except he apologised, so he clearly admits he said those things. Otherwise there would be pushback. This is a really bad look for them, so if there was any possibility of doubt, they'd absolutely push that. The fact you resorted to suggesting anyone not happy with the result here is a "Biden hater" just suggests you're a tribalist looking for any excuse to dismiss this.

CNN reporting Ducklo has resigned.

Let’s be real, he was told to resign after it was clear this story wasn’t going away

by Anonymousreply 93February 13, 2021 11:28 PM

Now this is where everyone STFU, because the admin did the right thing.

by Anonymousreply 94February 13, 2021 11:36 PM

What nationality is the name Ducklo?

by Anonymousreply 95February 13, 2021 11:41 PM

R94 The admin didn't do anything. It became too big of a media story so they obviously had a conversation about PR and how to get out of this before it becomes any bigger. Nothing about it says they cared in the least about how he treated the woman. I am sure they have worked out a deal or another job for him.

by Anonymousreply 96February 13, 2021 11:43 PM

R94 Except they didn't. They just had to hope he'd do the right thing, which he did.

by Anonymousreply 97February 13, 2021 11:44 PM

The Politico reporter is a nasty piece of work. She’s also a deplorable. Ducklo and his gf both disclosed their relationship to their bosses and the gf was removed from the Biden campaign beat. The Politico reporter was just attempting to create drama and to try to paint the Biden WH as corrupt. Not saying his conduct was acceptable for his position, but I don’t blame him for being annoyed. The Politico reporter was being a troublemaker and a nosy cunt-trying to ruin his life over nothing. The guy is 32 with stage 4 cancer.

by Anonymousreply 98February 13, 2021 11:53 PM

I would have made them fire me.

by Anonymousreply 99February 13, 2021 11:57 PM

You can be annoyed without being threatening and misogynistic. It is a really weak argument to say his behaviour was understandable because she was a republican and its okay to treat women badly if they have different political beliefs. It has nothing to do with his position. It isn't how someone should treat a woman period. The backflips to avoid any responsibility is pretty telling. It seems most don't have issues with threatening or misogynistic behaviour - they are fine with that behaviour. When you only take a stand when the other guy is the bad guy but you protect the same behaviour in your own people - you don't have an issue with the behaviour. When you think some women deserve it, you don't have an issue with the behaviour. You are okay with being threatening and misogynistic as long as you are the one doing it and the victim is someone you don't like

by Anonymousreply 100February 14, 2021 12:02 AM

he's hot

by Anonymousreply 101February 14, 2021 12:21 AM

Not hot. These antics are a distraction. He may consider resigning and going to work as a Starbucks barista.

by Anonymousreply 102February 14, 2021 12:27 AM

He's resigned.

I hope he was fired.

by Anonymousreply 105February 14, 2021 12:35 AM

Good and good riddance.

The Biden administration is tasked with enormous challenges, too many to count properly.

The circus side show antics are wearying.

by Anonymousreply 106February 14, 2021 12:38 AM

This sucks.

Now it's Tara Palmeri's turn to have stage 4 cancer.

Fucking cunt.

by Anonymousreply 107February 14, 2021 2:57 AM

Ducklo is a huge dick for doing that but I can't help feeling sorry for him having stage 4 lung cancer at his age. By the time doctors discovered it, the disease had spread to his liver, his gallbladder, and his bones. I imagine Biden did also.

by Anonymousreply 108February 14, 2021 3:06 AM

His cancer must have responded well to treatment. He was diagnosed in 2019 and seems to be healthy enough to be active in his job and personal life. He is almost a year and a half post diagnosis and isn't showing signs of being terminal at this point. Obviously with cancer, things can change quickly but his age may be a significant protective factor.

by Anonymousreply 109February 14, 2021 3:41 AM

He looks like Michael Consuelos in that pic with the head tilt

by Anonymousreply 110February 14, 2021 3:49 AM

He has “resigned.” I don’t get this, the reporter was trying to extort him and she was not a colleague?

This is typical of females in the workplace.

Catty, vindictive, and hateful.

Always out to get men.

by Anonymousreply 115February 15, 2021 4:19 AM

Good. There is no place for his inexcusable behavior. Unethical, threatening and vengeful. Gee who doe he sound like?

by Anonymousreply 116February 15, 2021 4:27 AM

Asking for a little professionalism at this level isn't much.

We had to endure 4 plus years of bad behavior from the other people squatting in the WH, no more.

by Anonymousreply 117February 15, 2021 4:39 AM

Fire this aashole. I'm sick of men laying it on extra thick with women cause they know they can get away with it.

R119/R120 Wow, that's some astounding stupidity right there. It's almost a relief that you're the same poster, the thought that two different people would be that dumb in a row is pretty depressing.

by Anonymousreply 121February 15, 2021 5:30 AM

I doubt they cut off his health benefits. I am sure that was all part of the resignation planning process and why it took a couple days for him to resign.

I had a family member that lived with terminal stage 4 cancer for 16 years. It isn't always terminal in the near future if it responds well to treatment. It is just likely to reoccur

by Anonymousreply 122February 15, 2021 5:47 AM

R122 There was someone on Reddit who said that because he resigned, rather than being fired, he'd be eligible for healthcare coverage for 18 months.

If that is the reason they went the route they did, that's fine, but they should've gone straight to the resignation, skipping the 1 week suspension thing.

by Anonymousreply 123February 15, 2021 5:49 AM

R123 I agree. If they had said immediately that he would be leaving but that he had been given the option to resign to maintain health benefits - that is both immediate action and compassion. Better than the response of basically saying it wasn't a big deal, blaming the victim defending Ducklo, saying he will write a note saying sorry...and then having him resign a few days later for PR reasons when the press started to make a fuss

by Anonymousreply 124February 15, 2021 5:53 AM

I mean, if this is what qualifies as a White House scandal now...? I'll take it.

by Anonymousreply 125February 15, 2021 6:06 AM

His resignation statement:

Reads like he had his thesaurus out and was told to self-flagellate for the people.

Should the girlfriend stick it out with him or not? If he’s going to die in five years then should she waste her best child-bearing years on this guy? She’ll have so much baggage afterwards with a dead boyfriend that she’ll be undatable and it would be hard for her to find someone to start a family with and would end up a spinster. Should she just cut bait now and try elsewhere?

by Anonymousreply 127February 15, 2021 6:26 AM

Could have just hung up the phone on a prying, nosy bitch. "My personal life is off limits for discussion". Don't make threats.

by Anonymousreply 128February 15, 2021 6:52 AM

[quote] if this is what qualifies as a White House scandal now...? I'll take it.

We agree. Intimidation of the press in service of a coverup of conflicts of interest. Big deal.

by Anonymousreply 132February 15, 2021 12:22 PM

I 100% agree with you R30. And then threatening a reporter with “I will destroy you”? Lol, who the fuck are you? Joan Crawford?

by Anonymousreply 133February 15, 2021 3:46 PM

[quote]Could have just hung up the phone on a prying, nosy bitch.

Except he called her.

A male journalist called him initially. Palmeri contacted the girlfriend. Ducklo then called their editor and was told to talk to the journalist. He then called Palmeri himself, rather than calling the male journalist who initially contacted him. In other words, he was too much of a pussy to take on a man, instead he decided to deliberately call and threaten a woman, and suggest she was jealous. His actions were utterly indefensible.

by Anonymousreply 134February 15, 2021 5:37 PM

His Axios girlfriend had just gotten engaged to another man in June 2020...then after Biden wins the election and she gets the Biden beat, she dumps her fiance for a White house staffer....hmmmm. One might think she has ulterior motives.

by Anonymousreply 135February 15, 2021 5:44 PM

Typical straight man, R134.

Although I'm sure he tells himself he's "such a great guy" and "loves women".

Glad he's no longer a part of Biden's administration. They don't need trash like this.

by Anonymousreply 136February 15, 2021 5:47 PM

Sad that this is the biggest "scandal" that right-wingers could come up with against the Biden Administration.

It's a big nothing-burger.

by Anonymousreply 137February 16, 2021 2:06 PM

What's "sad" about it R137? He did it, it was wrong, he quit. What's "sad" is he chose to ruin his career in that manner, instead of controlling himself.

In the Trump administration, Ducklo wouldn't have been suspended or have quit. He'd have had numerous photo-ops with Orangina AFTER the threats and misogynistic behavior and probably even a promotion.

by Anonymousreply 138February 16, 2021 2:16 PM

R138 There is no evidence that this administration cared anymore than the last about the misogyny or the behaviour. What they did care more about was PR and public image so once it became a big news story and they were being criticized, they acted. Initially they barely did anything, hoping it would just not be big issue. Once it became a bigger issue, then he resigned. It is too bad they didn't care about doing the right thing or about taking a stand on bad behaviour, just about looking good.

by Anonymousreply 139February 16, 2021 5:09 PM

He has stage 4 lung cancer. I've had family members who became more agressive while they were undergoing chemo...I'm willing to bet that partly explains his behavior.

by Anonymousreply 140February 18, 2021 4:00 PM

R138, exactly

by Anonymousreply 141February 18, 2021 4:03 PM

[quote] There is no evidence that this administration cared anymore than the last about the misogyny or the behaviour.

Really? This whole election was about being different from how Trump treated people
