Apology not accepted. Sending this out during your career slump makes it seem fake as hell. When he was riding high, he didn't have time to address this. Bye, JT!

He's such a loser. He only apologizes when he gets criticized--it's like when his friend made the video of homeless men for his wedding and he did nothing to denounce it until it was criticized on social media.

Is "both individually" even possible? Logistically, I mean.

Yes it's so sincere after these crazy Britney and Janet stans bullied him online and likely bullied Jessica too until JT had to give a public apology. Despite the fact he said that he did apologize to Janet in private and likely did to Britney too. Fuck these toxic entitled stans who need to mind their own damn business.

by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 12, 2021 6:04 PM |
I dunno. It does sound somewhat sincere. But it should have been said publicly long ago. However, when he was in the centre of these hurricanes, times were different. I’m not absolving him of his complacency, I’m saying back then, it wasn’t seen as the problem we’ve now come to realize it actually was. Righting wrongs doesn’t usually happen at the proper time. It’s most often done in hindsight, with proper reflection and context. Should he have spoken up about this earlier? Absolutely. Whatever his motivation may be, is this a step in the right direction, I think so. Now I’m not a fan of his, by any stretch. However, I think we need to recognize when people acknowledge that they’ve made mistakes, and commit to trying to be better, and do better.

He should have told them to fuck off and get a life because it's nobody's business. He said he did apologize to Janet in private in an interview and obviously Britney doesn't care or probably is too mentally regressed/over-medicated to even remember. It's crazy how fandoms are so hung up on shit in the past and hold it against someone for 20 years. I can't imagine holding a grudge that long against someone I do not know.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 12, 2021 6:38 PM |
If he were truly sorry, then he would have issued a sincere apology to Janet before he agreed to do the Super Bowl a few years ago. He only cares about these things when it starts to affect his career. He saw Janet and Britney getting dragged for YEARS and said nothing.

R17 Why do you care? That's between the two of them. I don't understand what this has to do with any of us when it's a personal matter.
Why everyone is acting so sanctimonious like they never lied or betrayed or refused to apologize for some wrongdoing they did. We all have pride and don't want to own up to our personal failings. So why do we act like any famous would be different. This is why I hate fan culture and social media. People focus more on famous people's lives then their own.

It's funny how #FREEBRITNEY talks about how unfair it is that people bring up Britney driving with her son on her lap and nearly dropping him the sidewalk too, hitting a car and fleeing the scene and attacking people with umbrellas and say that it was over 10 years ago. Yet JT is the most evil person who just bragging about sleeping with her and making a break up song almost 20 years ago.

And also the fact that Britney pursued and seduced Kevin Federline and it ended his relationship with Shar Jackson who K-Fed had kids with. But oh right, Britney's a pretty white girl, so nobody cares. Alicia Keys though is a black girl, so people always call her a homewrecker. They only call out white male privilege but never white girl privilege

When will they go after Lynne Spears. She is the svengali and the main reason why Britney was even thrusted into the spotlight, sexualized as jailbait, went around saying she was a virgin, put on drugs to perform well and introduced to grifters like Lutfi and Lynne even wrote a book about Britney's rise and fall which included details of Britney drinking at 13, having sex at 14 and smoking pot and coke before she was 16. Lynne exploited Britney the most and Lou Taylor, also a woman, exploited Britney too. Yet nobody is hunting them down...

Even though I agree JT has an arrogant and annoying personality and is not as talented as he thinks he is. I am sick of these butthurt Britney, Janet, JC and NSYNC fans who refuse to move on past 2004. It actually makes JT look sympathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 12, 2021 7:11 PM |
It's actually kind of disturbing that people are still latching onto these things.
Save this shit for predators, sexual abusers, rapists, killers, Trumpsters. Not pop stars. People who actively and willingly hurt others.
I'm no JT fan but in the case of Britney, they were a couple who broke up. How many singers use their exes/past relationships for album material? All of them. JT Is no different. And Britney was no saint herself. And again, with Janet, Jesus Christ, move the fuck on. It was her Super Bowl performance. She called the shots. The fallout was not JT's fault. He didn't control the narrative or how America would act so puritanical. It sucks how Janet was treated, but she sealed her fate when she decided to show her boob AND TOLD NOBODY. That's the price you pay for your decisions.

R34 In black culture, dissing is a sign of mutual respect. Prince disses everyone. JT just decided to diss back. I doubt P gave a shit. White people seem to not understand that boasting and playful insults is a sign of communication in black culture. It is not meant to be taken seriously. Timbaland was heavily influenced by Prince and Jam & Lewis and JT named Prince as one of his idols.
The hologram was stupid though and not defensible.

The problem is r37 they will never let JT forget. He could donate both kidneys to Janet and Britney and it will never be enough. Even in death, they would tweet about his white privilege, he is a misogynist, a cultural appropriator, etc.
I am no fan of JT but the fact that there's a thread posting a pic of Aaron Schock lying on some beach with not a care in the world, while the Twitterati is going after JT makes no sense to me. When did JT use his clout to actively fight against gay rights??
Sick behaviour.

Taylor Swift never gets called out for most of her albums which are breakup songs that exploit whatever relationship she is in. Justin only had two songs like that "Cry Me A River" and "What Comes/Goes Around" while Taylor made a whole career off of it. But of course Taylor is this strong feminist queen.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 12, 2021 7:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 12, 2021 8:12 PM |
I forget his exact words in his public apology at the time but I remember it seemed like he threw Janet under the bus after the Super Bowl. That said, he has commented on it over the years and recognised the unfairness in how he was treated vs Janet, even calling it out as a gender/race issue in 2006 or earlier (see Janet Oprah interview). But the hysterical hordes with no life need a new tweet, video, etc because heaven forbid they leave something from 17 years ago in the past.
I say that as a Janet fan and someone who finds Justin Timberlake annoying and unpleasant in a lot of other ways.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 12, 2021 8:25 PM |
I think Britney is a better example of white privilege than anyone. JT can actually sing live and still dance and there's a reason why so many black producers will work with him. His albums are highly respected as pop classics and had crossover appeal to both suburban and urban markets.
On the other hand. Britney couldn't sing well even in her prime, was a good dancer but injured her leg and can't dance at all anymore. None of her music really made a huge impact like JT's FutureSex/LoveSounds did. She hardly sang live and doesn't even try anymore. Her choreography was never as good as her inspiration Janet Jackson or her peers like Mya, Jennifer Lopez or Ciara. She went crazy in public and acted out but was forgiven and given sympathy that no ugly or nonwhite woman would have gotten. Beyoncé nor Rihanna would have gotten second chances if they behaved like Britney did. Rihanna got mocked in fact for getting beaten up by Chris Brown and left her dead. If K-Fed did that to Britney, nobody would have treated her like they did Rihanna

Justin was joking about what he did to Janet to reporters immediately after the performance. It was only after the backlash had started that he began singing a different tune. And he literally begged and cried to Les Moonves to keep him on the Grammy Awards that year because he didn't want his career ruined over it. He punked out in a bitch ass way and he should have owned it years back and made proper amends to Janet in public.
[quote]JT can actually sing live and still dance and there's a reason why so many black producers will work with him. His albums are highly respected as pop classics and had crossover appeal to both suburban and urban markets.
Pharrell and Timbaland are responsible for Justin's success. A lot of people in the black community can't stand him because they see him for what he is. A fake, pandering sellout.
Robin Thicke and Bruno Mars are far better entertainers, and true artists. Justin can't compete with either of them on his best day.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 12, 2021 9:25 PM |
R51 I'm black and have no issue with JT at all. That shit is so old and tired and it's 2021 and people need to let it rest already. And yes I know about Pharrell and Timbaland. Majority of artists rely on producers for success. So I don't know why that matters.
"Sellout"? He came from a boyband that had an R&B/urban sound when they debuted. He continued the urban sound that NSYNC had into his solo debut.
JT is more talented than Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, Britney and Fergie who used black producers too. So I think he can stay just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 12, 2021 9:31 PM |
[quote]And yes I know about Pharrell and Timbaland. Majority of artists rely on producers for success. So I don't know why that matters.
Because Justin's paraded as some musical genius on the level of Stevie Wonder. It's a joke. The man hasn't one solo writing credit to his name.

No.

There's only one solution: They should give Janet the half time slot at next years Superbowl as a redo/apology.
And CBS should formally apologize for Les Moonves blackballing Janet.

I don't know anyone who thinks that. He's a pop star and an entertainer. Just because people are delusional and believe that is not my problem.
[quote] No.
Objectively he is a better singer than J. Lo, Bieber, Britney and Fergie who are awful singers. JT can carry a note and sing live.

You're right. "Oops, I Did It Again" was not nearly as big as ... um ... well ... that one song he did where the backdrop was white and he danced around?
You can say what you want about Britney's talent but her music was hugely influential on an entire generation of people and many other artists that came after her.

Toxic was the best single of the 00s. Justin wishes.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 12, 2021 9:50 PM |
R56
How is Britney influential in music? Her whole career was started as a female solo version of the Max Martin sound that Backstreet Boys had. She was outdated by 2001 when the urban and pop rock sound dominated the radio. Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera, Ciara, Gwen Stefani and Ashanti had more of an influence on music. Britney was just a pop culture icon due to being hot and her scandals. She was mostly a singles artist and a vessel for producers just like Rihanna.
Also Toxic sounded good due to the production and Cathy Dennis writing it and doing backup vocals but it was a standard Europop song that could have went to Girls Aloud.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 12, 2021 9:53 PM |
Britney is highly underrated. Her Blackout album is proof of that!
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 12, 2021 9:58 PM |
And it's ironic that people will say Timberlake would be nothing without Pharrell or Timbaland. But insinuate that Britney wouldn't be anything without Max Martin, Danja or Bloodshy and Avant who written and produced most of her hits. You cannot attack Justin's talent without being hypocritical in regards to Britney. It shows standoms don't actually care about talent because they are so emotionally attached to their faves. Anyone can see and hear that Britney is less talented than her peers. If she was not blonde white chick and wasn't forced down people's throats in the late 90s and early 2000s. Nobody would be defending her.
Also Blackout borrowed heavily from Gwen Stefani's Love.Angel.Music.Baby, Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds and Nelly Furtado's Loose. Gaga's The Fame and The Fame Monster were more influential.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 12, 2021 10:04 PM |
Too late. That “Sweet soul” tweet of his solidifies how he didn’t give a shit about apologies when his career was still hot. And he owes Prince an apology for hosting his MOTW party at Paisley Park and that Super Bowl hologram stunt as well as for dissing him at an awards show and in that song of his.
And damn right about CBS and Moonves owing Janet a public apology. If the Mrs. America organization can publicly apologize to Vanessa Williams and Michael Powell can publicly apologize to Janet, then CBS and Moonves can surely apologize to Janet.

[quote]But insinuate that Britney wouldn't be anything without Max Martin, Danja or Bloodshy and Avant who written and produced most of her hits.
Who is saying that? Britney was the right person at the right time and had the right look. Her team also worked with the right people. It's not so much about Spears herself as much as it is the combination of all of it together but it was her face behind all of it. You could say the same thing about many artists out there. That package together encouraged imitators who all wanted to capture that special something that kept her music on the airwaves for years.
[quote]How is Britney influential in music?
Everyone from Miley Cyrus to Ariana Grande and even Beyonce herself said they were influenced by her. We both know they mean the idea of her and the music created by the people she worked with but again her face was the one attached to it. To me it's the same as her. If she wasn't influential then we wouldn't still be talking about her and the only reason people still care about her scandals and struggles is because of the music. It's all rolled up together in one.

not entirely off topic, but what exactly was the 'wardrobe malfunction'?
was Justin supposed to rip off something and Janet's covered breast was supposed to be 'exposed?' Rather anti-climatic.
If we were supposed to see skin, well, we did; plus the nipple was covered up, wasn't it.
I kept hearing 'the children, the children'...what about all those football players tight high butts in those tight uniforms?

People saw this documentary and now they think they are experts on things that happeend more than 16 years ago. Get over it.

This is all so stupid. I don’t understand why people think what he did was evil. He wrote a spiteful song about an ex and said things about their sex life. Big whoop. It’s his prerogative. He ripped Janet’s titty cover off... *as she asked him to do, and as she planned as the fucking headliner of the gig.* Who cares? What should he have done? Told her no and forgone the chance to perform with her at the Super Bowl? Bullshit.
Personally, I don’t feel a public apology was necessary. Both were private issues. Nevertheless, he HAS gone ahead and issued an apology, but that’s not good enough for the twitteratti cancelists? What would you like him to do? Shall he ask Jessica Biel to nail him to a cross erected on the hills above Runyon Canyon? What act of contrition would be good enough to forgive him of these horrible sins?
People can fuck right off. This shit is ridiculous. I’m willing to bet the ones screaming the loudest for JT’s cancellation would be singing a different tune if their personal laundry were hung out to dry for public scrutiny.

Justin Timberlake acted like any college douchebro would have acted and many of those douchebros grow up. Men mature slower than women and people forget how young JT was during the Britney fiasco and Nipplegate. He's 39 now and has grown up. R73 Yeah but he basically tried to get her canceled before this was a major trend on social media. It wasn't one or two instances of being an asshole. He slammed her wherever the occasion arose, knowing that it could destroy her career with sponsers, fans, etc.
Trying to destroy someone's reputation is trying to cancel them... so why the pity for someone who is a hypocrite? Why is okay for him to do that for years, but not okay now?

Anyway, if Timberlake wasn't famous, nobody would be holding it against him 20 years later and would brush it off as just an immature and petty heartbroken young guy. That's the problem with growing up in the spotlight, the stupid shit you say and do when young gets held against you. Britney was into drugs and slept around and did a lot of stupid things and was mean and rude to people too but because she is now mentally delayed, people do not hold that against her.

I bet nobody overseas gives a crap about this and would think this was stupid and ridiculous to put energy into.

I can't believe Justin Timberlake is actually coming across as the sensible one here. He could have been like me and said "suck it haters!" But he actually apologized. If Janet and Brit stans still want his blood and don't accept his apology then they truly are vile and immature people who probably need years of therapy to get so vengeful and bloodthirsty towards a person they do not know.

He had the opportunity a couple of years back when he was invited to perform at the Superbowl AGAIN to reflect on how sexist and racist it was that he was given that platform while his co partner in that awful performance was blackballed and struggling in her own career. He could have used it as a teachable moment to educate the audience at home on how white male privilege works and make a passionate apology to Janet Jackson and statement on how black woman are treated terribly. Instead, he said nothing and just pimped out his latest project.
So, no this carefully worded attempt at damage control now should not impress anyone. Because it's insincere. The words are there but there's no depth behind any of it. It's fake.

I can't wait for them to come after Pink and Rihanna. Pink made a diss song called "Stupid Girls" which made fun of Britney, Paris and Jessica Simpson. Rihanna laughed at Britney's 2007 VMA performance. Then Pink stans and The Navy will get into a battle with Brit stans.

[quote] He did nothing to Janet.
He threw her under the bus by pretending to be outraged about the incident, when he was on tape hyped up about it right after the show. Janet, on the other hand, was whisked offstage in shock and crying about having been exposed, and this was confirmed by the Halftime Show producer from MTV.
[quote]She stupidly thought flashing her ugly ass tit to the entire country during a family football game was gonna be oh so cute and get her career back on track. Instead, it exploded in her ugly, fat face.
You sound angry and bitter. To denigrate the looks of a woman who is widely regarded as beautiful and who you (thankfully) have never even met is déclassé at best. And, a family football game? Lol, spare me. A game full of violence, drunks in the crowd, racy commercials and close-ups of coaches and players cursing like sailors is more like it. And since when is the SB Fun Family Entertainment? The flash was half a second, if that. I literally had to rewind it just to be sure I’d seen what I saw. The media was the real culprit in blowing it up. You, on the other hand, sound like one of those racist Karens from middle America who were all in their fee-wings because “my baby saw a flash of that black woman’s boob!” Get a fucking life. Oh, and Janet was just off a #1 album, a couple of successful singles, a Grammy win and a world tour, so your little theory that she needed to get her career back on track is bullshit. They don’t ask people whose careers need to get back on track to headline the SB Halftime Show.

by Anonymous | reply 103 | February 13, 2021 12:38 AM |
Justin and Janet's apologies basically confirmed it was a stunt because they had to play along and make it seem like it was an accident. Janet's apology was half-assed and she was annoyed she even had to do it. Justin was the same. They both thought "wow America is still this damn puritanical about a mistake".
I think what was supposed to happen was he would tear the red bra and she would cover up the exposure with her hands but he did it too fast and her boob hanged out and flashed the audience. Anyway, I wish people would stop talking about this stupid shit. Nobody outside of The US cared just like how Fifty Shades of Grey was a preschool movie in Europe.

Geez, this thread is just crawling with stupid, racist Karens and Kevins I see. Les certainly did make it his mission to blacklist Janet. Disinviting her to the Grammys that year and getting her banned from MTV and pop radio were just some of the insane things he did. When her semi-auto-bio True You hit #1 on The NY Times Bestseller list, he reportedly got so angry that he asked who the fuck let the book deal happen and promised that heads would roll. And now, Mr. Moonves is living the life that he deserves as a disgraced social pariah, and his wife is nothing more than a coward who co-signed her husband’s molestation of women.

It hit for the first two or so weeks because of her core base, but then it sank. Trust me, nobody in the mainstream was checking for Janet in 2001. And Les Moonves or Justin Timberlake had no power over record sales or airplay. By '04 she was completely done. The public had moved on. It happens. r119, Janet Jackson was originally supposed to headline the Super Bowl in 2002 right after All For You came out, not 2004. So apparently someone was checking for her in 2001. The headliner was changed to U2, to have a more tribute style halftime for 9/11 victims.
All For You was an outstanding album musically. It lost momentum after 9/11 like numerous albums did at that time, and Virgin did a poor job selecting singles.

Britney is a mess. She has mental health issues. She cheated. He made music about it. It didn’t ruin her career. Who are the people who are so vehemently defending Britney? She’s a near middle aged woman with health issues who really had no true talent.
Janet Jackson choreographed that performance. She is also fifteen years older than Justin. She thought that performance would be provocative and gain her publicity for her upcoming album. She didn’t anticipate the backlash. He went with the performance she wanted and he got scared by the immediate backlash. His solo career was just starting. We’re supposed to be all “feminism!”, but this older woman was a victim to this younger star? No. She still doesn’t own up to it being planned to this day. Wardrobe malfunction? Yeah, no. You were trying to go for Madonna type shock value and it blew up in your face. Madonna, at least, owned her behavior and took the backlash she got.

Janet's biggest mistake was getting with Jermaine Dupri who is a whack producer and putting out weak albums after Damita Jo. The decline of her music quality along with her aging is what really did her career in.

Ignore R119. She was over in another Janet thread falsely claiming that Janet was done in 2001, when all of the industry awards, big record sales and radio hits she received that year (and the year before, I might add) are proof to the contrary. The Super Bowl does not have singers with waning careers headline the HTS.
[quote] Wardrobe malfunction? Yeah, no. You were trying to go for Madonna type shock value and it blew up in your face. Madonna, at least, owned her behavior and took the backlash she got.
Um...yeah. It was a malfunction, and the look of horror on Janet’s face as she’s holding her breast right afterwards, as well as the confirmation from the MTV producer about how mortified she was is proof of just that.
As for Madonna, well, Rosie O’Donnell once said that Madonna used to be in tears over the backlash that she got, but she is a white woman and was never truly going to be vilified forever for the stunts that she pulled. Black women (and men) are treated rather differently and aren’t afforded the same forgiveness by the public or by the industry. This fact should not be new to you, even in 2021.

Britney benefited from controversy. That's why her career lasted as long as it did. She used others for her career too. That Madonna kiss stunt and hanging out with Paris. She would have been over by 2001 honestly if she wasn't tabloid fodder. Because she had more talented competition

Janet had a run from 1986-2001 where she was an unstoppable touring and album-selling dynamo in pop music. The year before, she had starred in a #1 movie and had a #1 hit from the soundtrack. Her project before AFY, 1997’s The Velvet Rope, was another success that came with a world tour, hit singles, a bundle of awards, critical accolades and more influential music videos. Streaming and youtube views are mostly by young people. The last time Janet had a hit song was probably All For You, what year did that come out? There are young adults now who didn't grow up with Janet being at the top of the charts, and only know her from that Superbowl drama.
And she had some fun songs, but she never had an iconic song like Thriller or I Will Always Love You. I don't think you can compare their views like that.
And she got married and left the country. She hasn't been in the news much for nearly two decades in the USA. And she is known to cancel tours, that probably doesn't help in maintaining a loyal fanbase. And also, the views and streams go up when an artist dies.
Also, she’s just incredibly generic. She definitely made some great pop music, but 95% of it is just unidentifiable and is very much stuck in its era. Almost none of it has aged well.
In my life, I’ve never met a single person under 30 who can name more than 1-2 Janet songs (usually “Rhythm Nation”), much less say they’re fans. On the other hand, I’ve met plenty of legitimate Whitney fans.

This is complete revisionism. Madonna was upset and depressed over the Sex book debacle in private and she WAS villified! She was THE laughingstock in 1992 and 1993. She was proclaimed a has-been my many entertainment publications. There were even "whatever happened to..." articles written about her. The difference between Madonna and Janet is that Madonna put her clothes back on after that debacle and desexualized herself. Janet continued to play the sex kitten routine into her 40s. She just didn't get it.

R149, Katy Perry absolutley. I mean, if she is a has-been now, it will only get worse. That's actually how like 99% of pop music is, the big exception being Michael Jackson. They peak high but as time passes, rock and rap continue to get new fans while pop just changes. This is why albums like Appetite for Destruction, Nevermind, The Beatles albums, Queen's albums, etc. all continue to sell in strong numbers. The Beatles had that compilaton album that reached number one in 2000. Can you imagine in 2040 buying a Britney, Beyonce or even Madonna album and having it reach number one? Nope.

Janet's big mistake was fucking Jermaine Dupri and making generic-ass R&B with him as well as continuing to play thee sex vixen. Her best song since All Nite was Nothing which was featured in "For Colored Girls" and it was just a single. Janet could have did more music like Nothing, laidback R&B like Sade or Teedra Moses but she disappeared from music for 5 years and killed any chance at a revival. Mariah made the same mistake as Janet and kept trying to push her sexuality onto people after she turned middle aged and people also got tired of her especially when she stopped being able to sing.

I agree that Top 40 pop is designed to be disposable and only the truly good well-written/well-produced songs with a strong melody will be remembered. There's this movement to try to make pop music be taken more seriously by critics called "Poptimism". It started as a reaction to "rockism" in which critics would praise mainly rock or jazz albums but dismiss pop music. Poptimists argue rockism is driven by elitism, sexism and homophobia. But it's just laughable to me as it really just seems as justification for liking mainstream music and not expanding your horizons. I can't believe that Rolling Stone and Pitchfork jumped on that movement and trying to argue that Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Drake and Rihanna are groundbreaking artists with substance to their music.

R156 Britney really has not much of a legacy. I actually grew up with her music but most of it is dated now. I actually think Christina Aguilera's music may age better. I still find it hard to think people actually regard Britney highly especially when she has been phoning it in since 2008. I wonder if kids in 2040 will wonder why a girl with a chipmunk voice got a recording contract. Britney is truly one of the last of the manufactured over-commercialized pop creations. I think since Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Lady Gaga we have actually increased our expectations to have pop stars who can at least sing or write a song. The days of pretty girls used as mouthpieces for producers like Britney Spears, Fergie, Cassie, Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez are over.

R162 I think Britney just needs to mature her sound. She is too old to be making teen party music and she needs to stop singing in that chipmunk falsetto because it's headache-induing and getting worse. We all know that's not how she really sounds. I imagine she's just too mentally zoned out to realize or care that she is not taken seriously. I would love for her to have a Ray of Light moment and maybe bring out some guitars and acoustic vocals and sing in her naturally low voice. But I am also a realist and understand it won't happen.

by Anonymous | reply 165 | February 13, 2021 8:21 PM |
R165, I think it was probably Janet just wanting to get back at Madonna for how she badmouthed her to Michael and made fun of her with others. So it's understandable. But it's funny that Janet ended up taking the sex kitten thing really far and prolonging it.

I'm curious to how Max Martin got away with reusing the same melody in his songs. Just like Stock Aitken Waterman, Martin would rip off his own sound.
"Baby...One More Time" is "Oops...I Did It Again" (Britney)
"As Long As You Love Me" (Backstreet Boys) is "Sometimes" (Britney)
"Larger Than Life" (Backstreet Boys) is "Stronger" (Britney)
"Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" is "Drive Me Crazy" (Britney)
"Overprotected" (Britney) is "Gonna Be Me" (NSYNC)
by Anonymous | reply 169 | February 13, 2021 8:35 PM |
R169, I hate Max Martin. His sound was so generic to me. In fact, I actually think Britney's later songs like Womanizer, I Wanna Go, Three, Give Me More, sound so much better than BOTM or Oops.

Britney's career is over. She is too mentally regressed and her meds have to be upped more. She isn't performing out of her protest it's because she can't. People do not want to see her lip syncing and struggling on stage and I think her Vegas shows got cancelled. I think this whole documentary was cooked up to revive interest in her dying career. Her team has been releasing new singles from her previous albums from the vault to revive interest in her.
Justin's career is nowhere close to ever. He just got a film role and he is working on a new album. He is healthy and sane and can still sing and perform. He will continue to get booked unlike Britney because professionalism is what matters more in the business.
Majority of people who do not live on Stan Twitter, ATRL and Lipstick Alley do not care about Nipplegate and didn't care even back in 2004 because it was stupid. In fact, people rewinded their tapes to get a look at Janet's boob and YouTube was partially created for that reason. Anyway, we had a war in Iraq and a Presidential election to worry about instead of Janet's nipple. Soccer moms and Evangelicals who are a vocal minority but make up a big viewership of the professional football complained about it. Timberlake had no bearing on the mainstream media caving to the Evangelicals and Janet getting further shamed and blacklisted. However, most normal people do agree in hindsight that the reaction was an example of a double standard and Janet was a victim of misogyny and racism. But still it's not solely Timberlake's fault because it was a stunt that backfired and Janet was in on it too.

Anybody who doesn't believe the "wardrobe malfunction" wasn't planned is delusional. Women don't go around wearing pasties under their clothing and bras normally. in fact, 99% of women don't even OWN pasties (unless they are strippers). it was placed there so that the entire tit wasn't naked. Get a clue, morons.

Have never met a more smug, shitty celebrity in my life.

Britney dodged a bullet, and Janet caught it.

[quote] And she had some fun songs, but she never had an iconic song like Thriller or I Will Always Love You.
Have you been living under a rock for 30-plus years?
Nasty, with its “Janet, Miss Jackson if you’re Nasty” catchphrase has been a pop culture staple for decades.
Control is also a big part of pop culture and was just recently the subject of an episode of The Goldbergs. It was also covered in concert by Whitney.
The synth baseline for What Have You Done for me Lately was copied ad-nauseam in the ‘80s by various artists and the song was covered live by Prince many times. It was even performed in the movie Sister Act 2.
Rhythm Nation along with its iconic video is also an indelible part of pop culture.
[quote]And she is known to cancel tours
She toured off and on from 2015 to 2019 and had a successful run in Vegas with nary a cancelled show. But you tried it.
[quote]Also, she’s just incredibly generic.
Says the maroon with zero taste. Tell that bullshit to the generations of artists she inspired and the legion of fans worldwide who make sure she trends every year during the Super Bowl. Generic artists don’t get nominated for Oscars, or become pop legends with decades-spanning careers, or get inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame, or release music videos that have inspired nearly every pop star from the ‘80s through today.
[quote]95% of it is just unidentifiable and is very much stuck in its era. Almost none of it has aged well.
^More stupidity. The subject matter on the Rhythm Nation album alone is arguably more relevant in today’s world than it was when it was released 32 years ago. Artists like Solange, HER and FKA Twigs basically owe their careers to The Velvet Rope. Britney, J-Lo, Ciara, Mya, etc. are Janet carbon copies. Gaga, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Pink and Katy have all gone on record saying Janet’s music and career influenced them, and have showed as much in their own work.
[quote]In my life, I’ve never met a single person under 30 who can name more than 1-2 Janet songs (usually “Rhythm Nation”), much less say they’re fans.
Then you need to get out more.
[quote]On the other hand, I’ve met plenty of legitimate Whitney fans.

R180: big Janet fan here but I agree she’s never had that one massive song she’s known for like Whitney, Celine, Mariah, etc. Together Again is the closest. Spotify plays are a pretty good indication of an artist’s and a song’s relevance in the 2010s and onwards and Janet just doesn’t get the plays other artists/songs do. She doesn’t have one song with over 100,000,000 plays. I don’t think there is any other artist with such massive past success who hasn’t broken that 100,000,000 barrier with at least one song.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | February 14, 2021 3:15 AM |
What about "IF"? I guess that was more about the video and beats than any vocal or songwriting brilliance. But it's a hot song.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | February 14, 2021 3:17 AM |
Janet had a number of hits but, yeah, it's true, there's not really one song where it's a defining song. Maybe Nasty with "Miss Jackson if you're nasty" or "Rhythm Nation" or maybe "Together Again".

[quote] I think with Kurt Loder, where she was basically criticizing using sex to sell and went on to say something like, "I'll say this, what I do has class," and the gist was that she didn't need to use sex to sell. And then right after she did that she released The Velvet Rope. I always thought that was odd.
Your memory is fuzzy.
It wasn't Kurt Loder. It was another interviewer. She asked Janet to respond to compared to Madonna and Janet said, "It’s dance music, I’ll say that, which is very similar. I think… How do I put this? I think what I do has class to it. I’ll say that.”
MADONNA was the one who was interviewed by Kurt to get her response which was basically, I've never met her I don't get it.
The topic wasn't about using sex to sell. It was about them being similar period.
[quote]big Janet fan here but I agree she’s never had that one massive song she’s known for like Whitney, Celine, Mariah, etc. Together Again is the closest.

Rhythm Nation is her one massive song that she's known for although that song is remembered mostly for the dancing.
If not then Together Again.

You don't hear Janet's old shit like you do with songs from her contemporaries. And of course the Spotify and other streaming numbers are not as big either. She just doesn't have much of a legacy compared to her contemporaries.
Also, Madonna and Whitney were bigger stars back in the day.

Nearly every singer-songwriter female of the last 30 yrs have made millions off cheating exes. Are they slut shaming them too. This is fkin ridiculous. And the Janet fiasco. Madonna, Janet and Britney all are washed up. They relied on sex appeal and dancing and catchy pop beats. They were never pure singers. So they aged out. Nothing could have been done. Beyoncé became an album artist and kept her looks and Rihanna moved to fashion and makeup. That's why they're still relevant.

RN 1814 is one of only three ‘80s albums with 7 Top 10 (Top 5 in RN’s case) Hot 100 hits, and its videos are still imitated and songs are still covered and sampled. The same can’t be said about Like A Prayer, unless you include all of the times Madonna pulls the title track out of the closet, wipes the dust off of it and performs it to the indifference of many.

Imagine if Justin showed his dick at Superbowl or if he was flashing his dick for the paparazzi like Britney and Paris were flashing their vaginas. I don't think it would work well for him and he would get even worse punishment and be listed as a sex offender. And if Britney made fun of Justin having a tiny dick and being bad in bed. Then nobody would care.
America is weird. We have an unhealthy obsession with sex and there is a double standard.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | February 15, 2021 10:13 PM |
Also the fact that slut shaming and virgin shaming is still seen as offensive. I think people are confused. We are supposed to be living in a more sex-positive time and people are supposed to be carefree on the matter. Slut shaming should not even be a real thing nor offensive unless people are still truly conservative about sex. Which I feel they are. If you're truly confident in your body and sexuality then you should not care what people think.

I feel her shock was from how fast he pulled it which exposed her breast. I think she planned to cover them with her hands once the light dimmed. This "controversy" was blown out of proportion. Only prudes and conservatives got offended by this. The news media and tabloids always manufacture controversy to sell. Most people didn't care back then and don't now and I bet most people are wondering why this is even being brought up again and why Timberlake is even apologizing
