Why was Brad Pitt not nominated for Fight Club?

Holy Shit. Am rewatching and I am stunned by how good he was.

movie was controversial, some thought it condoned violence.

Too decisive plus he and Norton were competing against each other.

I'd never seen it before. This is the first movie I've watched in a while which kept my attention at every moment. I am fairly placid, and certainly don't care about fighting or anything like that, but somehow, I was glued.

It makes everything we are being offered now look like complete drek.

Helena Bonham Carter was great. Really broke her out of her period piece type casting image.

HBC is the only UK actress to get the American accent right. The rest of them do a caricature and it sounds like sandpaper on stone.

Women like HBC’s character drive me insane. I have a hard time watching their antics and I yell at the screen.

by Anonymousreply 6February 12, 2021 7:06 AM

Haven’t watched it. I’ll opine once I do.

by Anonymousreply 7February 13, 2021 4:26 PM

It’s a good movie but was too controversial when it came out to be taken seriously.

There was a lot of Oscar buzz around Carter and Pitt while they were filming but once it started getting screened that was out the window.

Why was Mia Farrow not nominated for "Rosemary's Baby"?

by Anonymousreply 9February 13, 2021 4:54 PM

So often it depends on who their competition was but, yes, Brad was at his best in Fight Club and as R9 pointed out Mia Farrow so iconic in Rosemary's Baby is another to which I would add Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, Al Pacino in one of his most low key performances in Donnie Brasco, Hoffman in Straight Time, Nicole Kidman To Die For, Kirk Douglas Paths of Glory, Kim Stanley The Goddess, Deborah Kerr The Innocents.

by Anonymousreply 10February 13, 2021 5:15 PM

It also has a lot to do with the competition that year.

There are some performances overlooked that would have been nominated in a weaker year.

If The Wife came out in 2020 Glenn would win this year most likely

1999 was a strong year. Damon for Ripley was the real oversight IMO.

by Anonymousreply 12February 13, 2021 5:28 PM

Other actors deserved nominations in other movies.

Chuck Mitchell in Porky's Revenge, for example.

Terrence Stamp in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

RIver Phoenix for "My Own Private Idaho." Again, the move was controversial and outside the comfort zone of the Academy.

by Anonymousreply 15February 13, 2021 5:38 PM

At the time, the academy was VERY old. Like most of the academy was over 65--not enough people saw it. Reviews were mixed. The studio probably did not even submit the film for awards consideration. They did not spend a penny marketing for Oscars... Rupert Murdoch was so horrified by the film's message he fired the studio head, even though the film was poised to break even (and became a top selling DVD, generating huge returns after the fact)

Any other cast member of Boogie Nights would be a more deserving nominee than Marky Mark (Alfred Molina, anyone?).

Missing from the list: Andy Griffith for A Face in the Crowd.

by Anonymousreply 17February 13, 2021 5:45 PM

Molina in "Boogie Nights" was brilliant. Pitt was funny in a small role in "Snatch" the next year.

by Anonymousreply 18February 13, 2021 5:50 PM

i called that movie Cunt Flab

by Anonymousreply 19February 13, 2021 5:53 PM

That movie might be okay, but its obnoxious douche-bro fanbase ruined it, for me at least.

It was so popular, it singlehandedly revived the Pixies.

Also, who cares about the corny Oscars?

by Anonymousreply 20February 13, 2021 5:56 PM

Op the marvel was Ed norton. I don't like him. I don't like looking at his facee. He's pompus, entitled and smug. But, biy, is he good!
