She was wonderful when she was much younger, and she stole the show in films like "The Great Waldo Pepper" and "Rocky Horror," and she was even terrific in films like "Atlantic City." But I just don't thin k she's kept up with her younger promise--she's not bad, but she;s often simply competent. She could have been so memorable in "Feud," but she wasn't--I feel the other major actors in that (especially Jessica Lange, but also Jacky Hoffman and Alfred Molina) were so much more interesting. And she was playing Bette Davis!
Susan Sarandon is overrated as an actress

She was quite boring in Feud.

She was terrible in Thelma and Louise.

She wasn’t terrible in Thelma and Louise, geez.

I thought Louise was one of her best performances. She had a good run from "Bull Durham" through "Dead Man Walking"..
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 12, 2021 2:16 AM |
She has 5 Oscar nominations and her performances in Joe, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Atlantic City, Feud, Bull Durham, Lorenzo's Oil, The Other Side of Midnight, Thelma and Louise and The Witches of Eastwick were all good and though I never saw The Client, Stepmom or White Palace people and critics liked her performances in them. She's been in films for 50 years, has 164 credits and more flexibility and variety than Streep.

She was SO good in WHITE PALACE, and she and Spader sizzled in their love scenes. I mean, didn't we all have... that person?

Bodacious sagged tittys

I thought "White Palace" was fun, and Spader went bottomless.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 12, 2021 3:24 AM |
I was disappointed by her in Feud, though she did improve as the series went on.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 12, 2021 3:44 AM |
I think someone else could have played Louise, it is such a well written role. Geena Davis sort of quietly steals the movie from her, an amazing piece of work to play an almost comically altered character from start to finish and make it believable.
Can we just make this a Geena Davis thread.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 12, 2021 3:57 AM |
I'll give her Bull Durham, though. That part would never be given to an actress over age 20 today.

Although Sarandon didn't go far enough playing Bette Davis, she was far better than Lange in Feud. Why are people afraid to say that Lange was terrible as Joan Crawford? She gave a Jessica Lange voice quavering ragefilled and "vulnerable" performance. But it was TERRIBLE. She looked 30 years too old and 40 pounds too heavy. Kind of like a chinese laundress. Lange was SHITE.
Sarandon looked and sounded like a better looking and less drunk Davis. She was sexy and Davis was sexy too. Crawford may have been more glamorous (not by Jessica Lange though) but she was not at all sexy in real life. I think Sarandon was intimidated in that production, because Ryan Murphy is always sucking Lange's withered tit. Alfred Molina was the real star of Feud.
Sarandon has given many fine performances. She is more of an internal actress and very natural. More like the great Sissy Spacek than the freaky Lange or Streep.
As Roger Ebert said of Dead Man Walking, Sarandon may be the first person to play a spiritual person from a spiritual place. Don't sleep on Susan. She's very fine indeed. And very sexy. See Atlantic City or even The Hunger. Or Witches or Rocky Horror. She wasn't very good when she was young. But she was always experimental. She is every variety of a woman. Sarandon deserved the Oscar for Thelma and Louise. Too bad the votes were split, so Jodie Foster won.

R13 that Oscar was Foster's from the second that movie was released.

The Lange Hater has resurfaced. Its stench is unmistakable. It must’ve tired of calling death to trans people and waxing rhapsodic about Faye Dungaway’s twisted visage.

Lange was marvelous in FEUD, bringing forth the hitherto unknown, undervalued, and underestimated facets of Joan Crawford. Though she doesn’t have Crawford’s doe-like eyes, Lange’s regal, sharply-angled face bore enough of a resemblance to Crawford’s to be more than satisfying; both share a similar silhouette.
She also captured Crawford’s ever-shifting voice, from the guttural (see Strait-Jacket trailer) to the more melodic (see video below, which highlights how much Lange did sound like Crawford) tones.
Emotionally, Lange ran the gamut and nailed Crawford’s peaks and valleys. She should have won the Emmy but Kidman was riding the #MeToo wave of 2017. Plus, to be fair, it was sort of her comeback, and Lange had already nabbed 3 Emmys in less than 7 years. I suppose the fact that she was nominated for everything for this (Emmy, Globe, SAG, TCA, Critics Choice) is enough of a reward.
Both Lange and Sarandon chose to go the “less is more” route and as a result, the show is all the more poignant and heartbreaking. It’s also compulsively rewatchable. Watching those two together is like watching a masterclass waltz between two genius dancers.
FEUD should’ve won miniseries. It is my favorite thing Ryan Murphy has ever done, and probably the best filmed project Lange (along with Grey Gardens and AHS: Coven) and Sarandon (along with The Meddler) have done in about 15-20 years. The cast, the costumes, the cinematography - all of it was pitch perfect.
I’ve probably watched my FYC copy over a dozen times since 2017. Just exquisite all around.

Thanks for your great insight R15. I love Jodie Foster in Silence of The Lambs. But I think that Sarandon and Geena Davis's work was much deeper and more transformational.
I don't know anything about Faye Dunaway you fucking nutjob @ R16. Jessica Lange is not always terrible. Just lately, forever.
The only stench is your own breath. Keep the mask on please.

Lange looked like Sarandon's cleaning woman in Feud. With a fat ass and bad attitude. Joan Crawford was a grotesque human being in real life. In that Lange succeeded.

R26 You sad little creature. You make fun of Streep, call Siggy “bug-eyed” and “unpleasant,” go after Sarandon’s career, mock Viola, trash Glenn...
I’m noticing a pattern here.

Jessica, Susan and Donna Mills are all at the same level. Really not very exceptional. Jessica and her weird feral mannerisms are bizarre. Over ten times she has played the same horny flooze in heat.

You can always spot the twisted Lange Hater because it can’t help but always call her “horny.” 😂

Judy Davis would have been perfect as Bette. Susan Sarandon didn’t commit enough, and frankly looked much too good to be playing BD at this period in her life. Kieran Shipka as her daughter was ass.
What Jessica Lange did was interesting, but had nothing to do with Joan Crawford. She’s not really a technician the way Streep is; she’s at her best when she can just follow her instincts without worrying about mimicry, which isn’t her strength. Sigourney Weaver could have been great.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 12, 2021 4:39 AM |
Did Lange do breathy and horny in Feud too?

Did the failed penile injections give you an embolism R27? Can't you go back to obsessing about your many nosejobs and lawsuits for your fucked up procedures. You really are the craziest weird ASSHOLE on DL. That's saying a lot.
I've never trashed Viola, Glenn or Sarandon in my life. Not sure I've ever seen Sigourney Weaver except in that Alien film with my dad.
But yes Streep and Lange are both terrible hams. I like Jess better, its true. But she was terrible in Feud and I suspect she blew her wad about 10 years ago in all that AHS grandstanding. I loved her as Sister Jude. She plays everything as Sister Jude. Lange has nothing new to show anyone. So mannered and predictable. In Long Days Journey, the audience needed earpieces to hear her constant tortured whispering. But she has that great guttural bellow and half crying rage too. So versatile...oh and her burning up sexiness that she's been doing since the birth of talking films.....She's very alluring, but not a versatile actress. Terrible as Joan Crawford.
More subtle actresses are more enjoyable as they age. But you love the DRAG queen types like Streep and Lange and Joan Crawford. Crawford wasn't even an actress. She's sickening in that interview you keep posting. Yes, Lange was sickening too in her portrayal. But not in a good way.
Did all your plastic surgeries fail? I remember feeling sorry for you when you spoke of how he burned your dick when the penile injection was rejected. But then there were the hair plugs and nose grafts and the other augmentations you said went wrong. Suing all these doctors who had a good case against you because...you're nuts. I can't feel sorry for such a profane loon. You are dangerous and deranged. I've seen one Faye Dunaway movie in my life. The one everyone has watched. She was very beautiful. So, I must pity you and wish you the best Lange Loon. We prayed for you at church one week. Viola was there. And Alfre Woodard too. One good, one great actress.

For Jessica, she suffers from a poor film catalog except a few very old films where she has a minor role. She had more success with AHS, but it’s definitely the same campy character over and over again.
Sue has better films but I do think she is average. Neither of them even approach Streep or Crawford in terms of screen legends.

I watched a somewhat recent Robert Redford film called The Company You Keep about a group of former members of The Weather Underground trying to evade the FBI.
Sarandon appears in the first third of the film and she is by far the best thing in the movie performance-wise.
