I'm not sure I'd call it a comeback, really, as he never actually won the leadership in a popular vote: the party leader (and Taoiseach) resigned, the party membership chose a guy called Simon Coveney to succeed him in those positions, but the parliamentary party overruled the membership and chose Varadkar. This all happened without a general election (because we have the Westminster system where the executive sits in the legislature and is, legally speaking, chosen by the legislature). When he went to the people in a general election of his own, his party came third (though by narrow margins).

First of all, it would be pretty hard to render chest hair on marble.

But the Greeks used to look very different before they were conquered by the Turks. They used to have blond(e)s other than Melina Mercouri back in the day, or so the ancient poems tell us.

I'm not surprised these politicians are so fit. Often the same thing that makes politicians so slutty (Anthony Weiner, Andrew Gillum, John Edwards, Aaron Schock, etc.) makes them want to hit the gym. I don't know of any evidence that the Turks colonized Greece to such an extent that they changed the genetic makeup of the population in any noticeable way. If that had been the case they would have also changed cultural things like the religion and language, which they didn't. More likely it's the opposite, that even in Turkey itself people have more DNA from the pre-Turkish inhabitants (Ionian Greeks, Galatians, Bithynians, everybody else going back to the Hittites) than from the Turkish settlers.

I have no idea where you're drawing that bizarre inference, R34. Obviously the Turks ruled over Greece for several hundred years and also committed genocide against the Armenians. But the Turks didn't settle in Greece to the extent that the local population took on Turkish DNA, the Turkish language (aside from some vocabulary), or the Muslim religion. Those things were mostly confined to a ruling class that left when Greece gained independence.
