This is ridiculous.
Trans Vox critic talks about how The Silence of the Lambs isn't "transphobic" it just "propped up transphobia"
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 10, 2021 5:39 AM |
There were protests when Lambs premiered thirty years ago. It was stupid then and it's stupid now.

Emily and his wife before. He’s always been a joke.

I'm sure this problem can ONLY be solved by hiring VanDerWerff and her friends and "trans sensitivity coordinators" only any and all movies to ensure accurate, only positive representations.

R2 Always such fatties.

Does that mean it's not transphobic for women to shout IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN where they see a bearded lady in the changing rooms at the swimming pool?

R3 Jen Richards, a trans actress and activist, was hired to appear and consult on the new "Clarice" show to make sure the depiction of Buffalo Bill was not transphobic.

Or this!!!!
"You got long eyelashes, but you're shavin' every day. I don't know what you represent is all that I can say ..."
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 9, 2021 9:05 PM |
The first year Emily switched over to being a woman, she tweeted about the interior of the ladies room v the mens room at a hotel where a press event was being held; Emily had been there (as Todd) in past years so, I suppose she was the only person who could properly do a compare and contrast.
But, honestly, it wasn't what I wanted to read about; it has nothing to do with TV criticism..
What made her think anybody would be interested in that? If you follow someone for their work -- in this case, TV criticism, you don't necessarily want to follow their trans journey.

Casting It's Ma'am! as Jame Gumb feels a bit gimmicky - the story is strong enough without looking for memes.

In that thread Emily Van Der Wolf describes The Crying Game as transphobic. How is it transphobic?
Stephen Rea kidnaps and tortures a black cis man who ends up dead and then Stephen realises that Black Lives Matter and feels guilty and then meets the black man's trans woman of colour life partner Jaye. Stephen initially struggles with giving AMAB TWOC oral sex because he hasn't overcome his genital preference prejudice but then Stephen's bitter ex cis-girlfriend Miranda shows up and is a TERF and blah blah and then there's some terrorism and Jaye the AMAB TWOC goes all trans masc and shoots the Miranda the TERF bang bang bang (audience cheers!) and then Stephen goes to jail and Jaye AMAB TWOC visits him and tells him a story about a scorpion.
It's a really positive depiction of trans rights and TERFs!

Buffalo Bill is a serial killer. In this narrow context, shouldn't the audience rightfully be transphobic?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 9, 2021 9:22 PM |
I think the biggest issue with trans is self love. You need to first understand the love of the person inside of you, who you are, who your soul is; and truly make love with that person.
Like, just every once in a while, stand in front of the mirror and say,
"I'd fuck me. I'd fuck me hard."
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 9, 2021 9:23 PM |
Why are the ones who complain about these types of issues almost always fat and ugly?

I found one. It wasn’t trans people protesting, it was gay people. I wanted to see if trans people were around then. No, of course. Just like they weren’t around for Brandon Teena’s brutal rape and murder.

R12 Did you ever read any of "her" stuff at the AV Club when she was still Todd? In her reviews of The Sopranos she mostly talked about her marriage? It was the most annoying navel-gazey thing I've ever read and it was about a gangster show!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 9, 2021 9:40 PM |
Todd is the guy who claimed watching The Handmaid’s Tale made him realize he was trans. He then took the Emily name from a character on the show. On THT Emily is the woman who is forced to have her clit removed when she acts out against the state.

In the book Catherine, the surviving victim, adopts her.

It has been a long time, but if I remember correctly, in the book it is made quite clear that Jame Gumb is not truly transsexual, and is turned down for gender reassignment multiple times before deciding to make a woman suit.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | February 10, 2021 12:29 AM |
Correct, the book is more careful to make explicit that Gumb isn't trans. The movie also references that he would have been refused gender reassignment surgery but it's sped along and key parts of the dialogue are off-screen (when you see Chilton listening in on their conversation).
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 10, 2021 12:40 AM |
R24 I used to read her at the AV Club. The AV Club was so good back then, not the SJW swill it is now. But even then, it was clear Emily was narcissistic and psychotic.

Correct. There are three major centers for transsexual surgery: Johns Hopkins, the University of Minnesota, and Columbus Medical Center. I wouldn't be surprised if Billy had applied for sex reassignment at one or all of them, and been rejected. Look for severe childhood disturbances associated with violence. Our Billy wasn't born a criminal, Clarice. He was made one through years of systematic abuse. Billy hates his own identity, you see, and he thinks that makes him a transsexual. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying.
