She's everywhere now. I don't get it. I know some find her funny but I never have. It was clear around 12 years ago that she was never going to be a thing, but they keep trying. Is Lorne Michaels really that powerful?
Why is Maya Rudolph being shoved down our throats?
by Anonymous | reply 126 | May 5, 2021 11:18 PM |
I like her name and the fact she does a fun spoof of Beyonce.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 9, 2021 6:47 PM |
I've adored her ever since her SNL days. She had a great 2020 after being in the business for so long, so this EW spread doesn't surprise me.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 9, 2021 6:48 PM |
If OP doesn't like her, then no one can like her, because he controls the opinions of everyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 9, 2021 6:51 PM |
What could be funnier than Maya Rudolph's voice in this sketch?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 9, 2021 6:52 PM |
More of Maya at her funniest.
"Where's my brekfix?"
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 9, 2021 6:54 PM |
I have always enjoyed Maya Rudolph's humor. Rudolph, Wiig, and Dratch always cracked me up. And Molly Shannon. We need a Rachel Dratch appreciation thread while we are at it. She can steal a scene just standing there.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 9, 2021 6:54 PM |
She's gained a lot of weight. Is she competing with Chrissy Metz?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 9, 2021 6:57 PM |
I'd love a Dratch appreciation thread! That class (Fey, Poehler, Dratch, Rudolph, Shannon, Gasteyer) were all excellent comediennes.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 9, 2021 6:57 PM |
Why does she always dress like Mrs. Roper?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 9, 2021 6:57 PM |
The Maya Rudolph hate is a weird troll topic, but it comes up every couple of months or so.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 9, 2021 7:01 PM |
I like her way more now than I did when she was on SNL. She was on SNL when they had a token black cast member, and most of her parodies of every black woman under the sun were awful.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 9, 2021 7:07 PM |
Her Kamala stanning is a little embarrassing. And how come nobody's asked her what Fiona Apple said about PTA being abusive? Not that she has to answer for him but I'm curious. I wonder if that's partially what all this recent PR is for. To drown out the publicity Apple also got last year.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 9, 2021 7:11 PM |
[quote] And how come nobody's asked her what Fiona Apple said about PTA being abusive? Not that she has to answer for him but I'm curious.
Fiona Apple is a "him"? I didn't know.
I will respect his pronouns.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 9, 2021 7:24 PM |
Maya Rudolph is amazing. She was so cool in "Away we Go" with John Krasinski. Amazing script by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vigga
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 9, 2021 7:29 PM |
She's really funny and seems like a down-to-earth person. Loved her on The Good Place.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 9, 2021 7:30 PM |
She was funny on The Good Place at first, but they kept her on way too long for what was a one-joke character.
I also don't understand her and Paul Thomas Anderson. Anyone know any gossip/stories on them? She doesn't seem like his type at all. From his work, he seems to like druggy/slutty pin-ups. Fiona Apple had that appeal when she was younger.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 9, 2021 7:33 PM |
r9 because of her distinct facial features, being a comedienne and ethnically mixed... late 60s/early 70s style apparel is the standard uniform for light skin biracial women. it also works because it keeps them firmly in casting director's minds when they're thinking of something other than the tragic mulatto.
thoug she's bieng pushed to forefront because she maneuvered her way there from the behind the scenes and made a lot of professional connections. . . she's a workhorse. I don't find her particularly talented or funny but I give props to anyone that can hustle as much as she can.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 9, 2021 7:34 PM |
One of those dummies who started dropping litters of brats and watched her career go up in smoke. Like Ana Gasteyer, she never really recovered. They're just nostalgia acts now.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 9, 2021 7:35 PM |
r13 I meant it's not Maya's responsibility to defend PTA/speak for him, but I'm curious how she feels about it. Smartass.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 9, 2021 7:39 PM |
I wasn't aware that she was, OP. And this is an unpopular opinion here on DL, but I've always liked Maya Rudolph.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 9, 2021 7:40 PM |
I don’t care for her. Never found her funny. I don’t hate her, tho.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 9, 2021 7:42 PM |
I guess PT Anderson doesn't have a type. He enjoys a beautiful woman (Fiona) as much as a mushy, droopy faced mama (Maya). Hopefully he doesn't abuse Maya like he did Fiona.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 9, 2021 7:43 PM |
Did anyone watch her variety show with Martin Short? If so, how was it? I never saw it but I know it didn’t last long.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 9, 2021 7:44 PM |
She isn't being "shoved down my throat." I find her funny and think she is talented. And her Kamala Harris impression has put her back into the spotlight.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 9, 2021 7:45 PM |
[quote] She was funny on The Good Place at first, but they kept her on way too long for what was a one-joke character.
I've loved most of her work, but I think this is a weakness for her overall - she doesn't know when to stop in some of her skits.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 9, 2021 7:47 PM |
Does she have a single black friend?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 9, 2021 7:48 PM |
R27 why would that possibly matter?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 9, 2021 7:51 PM |
No one is shoving her down your throat, Mary. Of you don't like her, don't watch her shows and movies
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 9, 2021 7:52 PM |
r28 Because she only wants to acknowledge/act black when it's advantageous to her.

Maya Rudolph for Interview Magazine, October 2002
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 9, 2021 7:57 PM |
She makes me laugh sometimes, I don't have any big attraction to her. But the OP is right. She's been around forever. How she continues to keep popping up, AND score the covers of magazines is completely confusing to me. I suppose some of it has to do with the race thing. America is so obsessed with race and the fact she's some mixed race combination of person, no doubt she's targeted by the media's woke requirements. Good for her I guess.

by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 9, 2021 8:33 PM |
Her imitations are weak, maybe that’s part of the appeal 🤷
But she’s hilarious on Big Mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 9, 2021 8:36 PM |
Oh no, Lorne is threatening to bring her back again for years. These last 2 episodes without her have been refreshing.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 9, 2021 9:57 PM |
Win what? She up for a Grammy?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 9, 2021 9:59 PM |
Fiona Apple sucks. The failed push last year by music critics to make her happen again was almost as annoying as this recent push for Maya.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | February 9, 2021 10:07 PM |
She really hit the wall after that 4th kid. I thought she looked great after the 3rd one around when she came back to host around 2012.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 9, 2021 10:34 PM |
I can't fucking stand her. The only impression of hers I ever liked was Whitney Houston, and it wasn't even that good.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 9, 2021 10:51 PM |
Never got the love either. Her impressions are horrible.
Debra Wilson was FAR superior. Her Whitney alone is iconic.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | February 9, 2021 11:06 PM |
Yes! Debra was amazing...actually, for its first few years, MadTV was far superior than SNL.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | February 9, 2021 11:15 PM |
NOT funny. She's not even someone I tolerate well enough to ignore. I turn things off if she turns up. Her terrible commercials recently show how lousy she is.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | February 9, 2021 11:21 PM |
*insert Donatella Versace performance here*
by Anonymous | reply 54 | February 9, 2021 11:24 PM |
I liked her as Dionne Warwick on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | February 9, 2021 11:35 PM |
You may hate her but she's popular.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | February 9, 2021 11:37 PM |
I would agree that part of the dislike is because Debra Wilson was around the same time and was way better. They did the same characters and Wilson brought it to another level. Rudolph's Whitney wasn't even an impersonation but Wilson not only got everything right, she went to a very dark place in her characterization and that was all in her acting.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 9, 2021 11:39 PM |
She’s on the cover of a magazine, so she’s “shoved down your throat?” Surprise - don’t buy the magazine!
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 9, 2021 11:47 PM |
She's funny enough. We need more comedic women.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 9, 2021 11:56 PM |
I’m relieved to learn Debra consistently works, and has since the 90s (dozens of projects each year). Apparently, she’s a prolific voice actor for video games.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 10, 2021 12:00 AM |
I don’t know why, either, OP.
I don’t “get” Maya Rudolph.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 10, 2021 12:08 AM |
All you really need are the first few words “Why IS Maya Rudolph.”
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 10, 2021 12:23 AM |
Oh fuck, here we go. The Debra Wilson troll has crawled out of their hidey-hole.
Every time Maya Rudolph's name is mentioned, the Debra Wilson troll surfaces to argue that Debra Wilson was far funnier and deserved Maya's career.
Just because Maya is half-black and Debra is black doesn't mean they're analogs locked in a zero-sum battle.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 10, 2021 12:29 AM |
Maya is hilarious and did many great characters on SNL.
Chief among them, Jodi on Bronx Beat.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 10, 2021 12:31 AM |
I’ve never thought she was funny, either, and she’s even harder to look at. When I think of people who’ve played comedic/sketch characters to the hilt, I don’t think of Maya Rudolph
And I know this is “heresy” or whatever, but I have never once laughed at anything Amy Poehler has ever said or done, and I have no idea why she enjoys the vaunted status she has.
The blond airhead struggling-actress chick from Search Party is funnier. Sarah Silverman was funnier when she had her own show years ago. Amy Sedaris is funnier. Kristen Wiig is funnier. Ditto Rachel Dratch.
I have no idea what people see in Rudolph or Poehler.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 10, 2021 12:50 AM |
I love Maya. When she's been on SNL again frequently in the last year especially, it's nostalgia and a nod back to the show's funnier years with talented castmembers who were funny because they could act, rather than they were just comedians or odd-acting or -named personalities.
She just makes me nervous when she dresses like a potholder, more often than not, lately.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 10, 2021 1:19 AM |
Amy Sedaris is one of the funniest people ever.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 10, 2021 1:23 AM |
R43, what nepotism?
70's One Hit Wonder Minnie Riperton (RIP) being her mother certainly didn't open any doors for her.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 10, 2021 1:35 AM |
So many things jammed down throats...
OP, are you dressing provocatively?
Do you walk places where you don’t belong?
Do you have a “cum hither” manner about you that says “Jam that down my throat?”
Do you fall unconscious and wake to find things jammed down your throat?
Have you ever seen a grown man naked?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 10, 2021 1:47 AM |
Yes.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 10, 2021 2:33 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 10, 2021 5:11 AM |
r71 Really? You wouldn't call the constant exaggerated hand motions and the "weird" voices overselling?
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 10, 2021 6:20 AM |
Also being featured in Harper's Bazaar for no real reason. What is she even promoting?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 10, 2021 7:40 PM |
I think she'd be an interesting choice for a remake of Funny Girl.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | February 10, 2021 7:57 PM |
And Interview magazine a month or two ago.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 10, 2021 10:02 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 77 | February 10, 2021 10:39 PM |
At least she's not dressing like a 300 lb. woman for once in that Harper's Bazaar spread.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 10, 2021 10:49 PM |
I get annoyed when she hijacks SNL lately.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 13, 2021 3:48 AM |

Maybe a new name is needed.

She's Sunny Hostin's best shot at being imitated on the next View sketch.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 13, 2021 4:07 AM |
So odd that she is married to Paul Thomas Anderson.
He seems like the type who'd keep her pregnant and at home while he beds every woman in sight.
This will end in tears.

r83 He's probably fucked all 3 Haim sisters. His obsession with them is creepy.

Maya Rudolph is hilarious in Big Mouth, This is not usually the type of show I go for, but it was lockdown Christmas and I binged it. Her playing Connie the Hormone Moster is hilarious. I don;t care for her on SNL currently, but I loved the magic she shared with the other female cast mates: Wigg, Fey, Polar
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 13, 2021 5:21 AM |

But she looks kinda like she smells. Some people just look like that to me. I dunno why.

by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 23, 2021 11:44 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 23, 2021 11:51 PM |
Mixed race girls like her - especially the jappy ones - are Hollywood’s hottest virtue signal.
So what if she’s a mediocrity.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | February 24, 2021 4:40 AM |
LOVE HER.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 24, 2021 4:42 AM |
She had diastasis recti, so that's likely why she always looks pregnant/out of shape even if she's not.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | February 24, 2021 5:57 AM |
r89 What a weird video. Her dad is the love of her life? Her and PT Anderson are the weirdest relationship. I've never seen them talk or look like they were in love. I guess they both wanted kids so that's why they got together.

PTA is gross and sleazy. Not sure why she stays with him.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | February 24, 2021 8:23 PM |

I told you, she is EVERYWHERE. WTF.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 1, 2021 3:18 AM |

Lorne Michaels is the Tommy Mottola of NBC, apparently.

by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 11, 2021 2:39 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 113 | March 12, 2021 2:59 AM |
Ugh. She comes from some "rich-as-fuck" family and grew up privileged in Brentwood. Lorne Michaels was "Uncle Lorne" growing up, because of her parents relationship with him, and she waltzed onto SNL after her Groundlings training when she was "ready". Same with Jason Sudekis.
This is the reason the show has sucked for 20 years!!!
by Anonymous | reply 114 | March 12, 2021 3:20 AM |

Maya hosts SNL to season low ratings. When is Lorne going to get the hint that she's NOT a star?

She looks like a younger FATTER version of Justine Bateman.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 16, 2021 6:57 AM |
She gets a sit-down interview with Guthrie (already a long way down from interviewing the president) to talk about an animated movie? And notice how she always has to talk about SNL and Bridesmaids, despite that they were 10-15 years ago.
