I love Nina Bonina Brown. I LOVE her. She wouldn't come out on the runway with tired ass makeup and no clothes on. I'd like to see a trans person on drag race, but ...couldn't they have gotten someone who at least gives the illusion of being a woman? For drag? Gottmik obviously is in the final four and won't win. It's a plant to get attention and "shake things up," and he's "in" enough to be pulling in high-cost costumers.

But whatever he sees himself as, he presents to the audience as biological female. Not Jiggly-, Carmen-, Sonique-, Gia- Kenya-, Stacy- or Monica-female. Girl girl.

When we're talking about drag, a post-op transman complicates things for the viewer. And why should people watching have to be woke, educated, improved and freed from normative expectations (in a transgressive performance art form, no less) when they're there to watch DRAG?

PS, Kandy Muse is a planted performer, as well. She's just another in a long list of aggressive fat queens who are on to irritate viewers and other contestants and keep people talking, no matter what "arc" they plan. I have no doubt she'll be in the final four, too.

I suspect the pool they're now drawing from is so depleted and weak that they feel such antics are needed to keep attention up. When Symone "I Can't Sew But I Look Great In Clothes I Have Made" and Rose' "Like My Butch 5 O'Clock Shadow?" are the best of the actual contestants, you can see it's a B- bunch this season.

Gottmik has thanked her fans and RuPaul's Drag Race co-stars for their support after it was discovered that Season 9 contestant Nina Bo'nina Brown had been making transphobic comments about her.

Gottmik is Drag Race's first transmasculine contestant and she has been very open about her transition. On Friday night's episode (Feb 5), the runway theme was little black dress and Gottmik took it literally, walking the runway in a tiny black "merkin" dress and nipple pasties, which proudly showed her top surgery scars.

In a YouTube review of the episode, Nina Bo'nina made comments about Gottmik's body. "Of course Gottmik can wear this and still have curves… we know why," Nina said, before laughing.

A viral thread showed another clip from a previous review, which saw Nina joking about the lyrics Gottmik wrote for her verse in 'ConDragulations'. The lyrics go: "Gottmik, was born a girl, baby. Was told that I can't do drag, knew I, had something to prove. Now, you're gonna lose." After a fan said that Gottmik's tuck was "always on point", Nina said: "You know he got a lot of stuff to tuck. In the words of Gottmik, Gottmik was born a girl."

Nina hasn't apologised for her comments, in fact, she's kind of doubled down on them. In an Instagram comment, Nina clapped back at accusations of transphobia. One comment read: "Not saying I know why a certain person has curves is the definition of transphobic it’s laughable tbh they claim so many drag race girls to be transphobic even ru. Yet their quiet when actual black trans woman are found dead and actually harassed they say nothing but jump the minute they can to shout someone’s transphobic within the community.

"Just a bunch of white evil twinks out to cancel a black queen what’s new? As many times these people have read queens for having boy body now their mad cus i said someone has curves was i lying? At this rate if anyone goes against gotmik or says he isnt that great or u don’t like a runway you’re transphobic lol [sic]." Nina has now made her Instagram account private.

On Tuesday (Feb 9), Gottmik addressed Nina's comments on Twitter and thanked fans for their support, writing: "Thank you to all of you for bringing so much light and love back into this situation and for all the [Drag Race] girls standing up and showing the trans community public support. It means so much to not only me but everyone else reading and effected by the negativity being thrown around."

She added: "Love you guys SO much and remember that you aren’t defined by a few mean comments."

Everything about every part of this comes part and parcel with progress. Taking all emotions out of the debate, it's interesting to see where people choose to draw their lines. Women fought for civil rights. Black people fought for civil rights. Gay people fought for civil rights. Transgender people are fighting for civil rights. And now I guess we are transitioning socially to a post-gender culture and all those prior identities are being swirled together and people who belong to the disparate identities seem to be drawing lines in the sand.

I don't have a dog in the fight, so to speak, but here are my candid feelings about it all:

--I admit I find it confusing that someone who was born an XX woman feels she is a man and has had surgery, has taken drugs and has adopted a mannish style of dress, but with a definite gay male affectation and chooses to dress as an exaggerated version of a woman to make money and to garner attention. RuPaul describes his early drag style as 'genderfuck,' and his version of genderfuck is really fucked to shame by a woman --> man --> woman.

--This probably reveals a personal prejudice, but I think I am especially confused by how gay (male) Gottmik comes across to me out of drag. It seems most of the time that women who transition to male have masculine mannerisms as many lesbians do, but Gottmik just seems straight up twinky. Has he discussed his romantic interests? I sense he dates gay men, which would really be quite a knot of sexual identities.

--I find Gottmik very cute as a guy, more than most Drag Race contestants, and that is really quite confusing but I'm being honest.

--He's not especially curvy in the video above, but the lower half definitely is that of a slim young woman. So yeah, I see where Nina is coming from.

--I have no resentment for the Victor/Victoria identity in day to day life; however, it does subvert the whole notion of drag. Drag used to be called "female illusion" and someone who was born a woman and who is pretty putting on makeup and being praised for looking like a beautiful woman isn't drag, exactly. I don't even know how to think of it. I am not mad about that. To be honest, I find it interesting from an analytical angle. But from a drag angle, it loses my interest because it just isn't as much effort and creativity for a person in a woman's body to look like a drag queen. So I guess I am admitting to a bias/prejudice/bigotry with respect to the show, and at the same time I do not mind Gottmik's personality.

--Speaking of which, I kind of like Gottmik as a TV personality. I suspect they are a narcissist (which many drag race and reality TV contestants are), but honestly, the personality fits in perfectly with prior drag race personalities. Gottmik passes well for a catty attention-starved gay guy.

--(I honestly don't know how to refer to them--we usually refer to drag race contestants who identify as male with "she" in this forum, but to refer to Gottmik as she seems like it would be interpreted as an insult despite them wearing drag.)

Overall, I think it's unfortunate that everyone is so reactive, either hateful against her or defensive in a vitriolic way, to the point we can't talk through the complexity of this kind of identity. It takes time to assimilate such differences. Straight people took centuries to accept the notion of gayness, with bisexual often serving as a bridge identity. Many of us are slowly acclimating to embracing transgender identity, and to see a transgender person who chooses to dress as their birth gender really is a gender fuck that begs conversation. I don't think Nina was incredibly disrespectful, particularly since Nina embodies the "shady queen" stereotype from Drag Race.

--Which makes me realize one point of latent resentment: Drag Race is brutal. When shady queens read one another, they are cruel and merciless for fun and that's part of the reason people love the show. The drag queens make fun of one another for being fat, having gnarly teeth, bad skin--really hurtful shit--and then they bond over it. But we all know that shading Gottmik has clearly defined limits that are applied to no one else, and that's cuts right through the heart of the show.

--As I said, I kind of like Gottmik and even think he is cute as a guy, but the name Gottmik is really fucking terrible. I can't believe the judges let that go after reading Heidi N. Closet all season for hers.
