This movie is Joan at her most evil.
In the book "Mommie Dearest," Christina Crawford said she couldn't watch the movie because her mother's character in it was too much like the real life Joan.

You just know that Joan fucked John Ireland at some point during filming.

Pretty sure you're correct R2. Joan liked the size meat, right? Good for you Joan. Good for you.

Thanks, OP.

Yes, thanks OP. I love " old Hollywood." None of the actors today are as talented. The air of mystery that those actors had about them is also gone. Boring, vanilla, over exposed in media , and the products of nepotism. No glamour. Sigh. I sound as old as I feel, lol.

Thanks! Rio Bravo is a favorite, and one of the few westerns I enjoy. Both versions. I love the scene were Robert Mitchum- yum- is bathing and a women enters the jail. Someone calls out " cover your eyes!" So RM covers his eyes. Cute. ( paraphrasing the dialogue)

Fay Wray in a small role. Interesting how her career had shittered while Miss Crawford was still holding on. I think she was actually a few years younger than Joan.

(R9) Thanks. I have never recognized her, I am sad to say. She was very pretty then.

But, R8, the film earlier to day was not "Rio Bravo" but the unfortunate "Rio Lobo", the 3rd film of that trilogy.
And I think you are thinking of "El Dorado" which was the 2nd of that trilogy and the only one with Robert Mitchum.
"Rio Bravo" was the 1st.

Joan on the phone: "Then I'll go to bed" as she loops it around Ireland's neck and hangs up.
"Aren't I wicked?"
Ireland "Yes, you are."

Aw! You are right, sorry, (R11.) I have been watch these movies since I was 11 or 12 with my late mother, bless her heart. Her favorites were Giant, Shane, and the one with Lana Turner? Heartbreaking it was! LT had a maid and the maid had a biracial daughter? Damn! I know this! Lol! My mother had a mad crush on Robert Mitchum, loved Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. She was so endearing trying to explain what "gay" meant!!! I had read hints of RH being gay in some tabloid. My mother said that means he is attracted to and has relationships with men. AND THERE IS NOTHING ABNORMAL OR WRONG ABOUT THAT NO MATTER WHAT THE IGNORANT HICKS IN THIS TOWN TRY TO TEACH YOU!!!!!! Um, ok mom, calm down ! Lol. God, how I miss her.

by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 8, 2021 3:31 PM |
1904- Joan Crawford DOB 1917- Fay Wray DOB
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 8, 2021 3:42 PM |
ETA: Is anyone really sure if Ms.. Crawford's true DOB? LOL!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 8, 2021 3:46 PM |
^^Fay Wray was born in 1907. She starred in King Kong in 1933, making her 26 at the time.

The campy Queen Bee is good for a laugh, but Crawford did better work in the 50s.
Her better films of the decade are Harriet Craig, Sudden Fear, Autumn Leaves and Female on the Beach.

It'd be easier to make a list of actors JC didn't fuck.
Speaking of John Ireland, here's an excerpt from his unpublished autobiography about Crawford that I always liked:
“All right, bring um in.” The first assistant director screamed out the instructions, loud and clear. Joan and I were going over our next scene, in her dressing room, on Stage 11. Joan asked with some agitation, “What did he say?” “He said, ‘Bring um in,’” I replied.
It was our first day’s shooting on I Saw What You Did. I waited, the crew waited, and the director waited. At Joan’s request, the head of the studio arrived, and now, he too waited. Joan worked on her agitation. “What did you yell at us?,” she asked the first assistant director. “I said, ‘Bring um in,’” he responded, with a touch of arrogance.
Joan really let go with a burst of sincere emotion. “Young man,” she said, “I don’t know who the hell um is on this set, but let me tell you something, even cattle have names. They’re called cows. Now this is Mr. Ireland and I’m Miss Crawford. I suggest you learn your craft and manners on some other set, not mine.” She was still a star.

Sudden Fear was an excellent Film Noir, one of her best, imo.

“I thought you’d know by now that I’m not to be summoned, like the kitchen maid.”
