Help: I need a new laptop
my laptop is crashing. On it's last lags. I am test out a HP specter, and I kind of hate it. So now I need another option. I will probably go through best buy. What do you recommend. II want a pc/windows. I need 16ram, 512 ssd. Also, a fast processor. I need a great keyboard. No problems. A long lasting solid laptop. I will use for personal/professional business, technical writing (thus the need for a great keyboard) and some light video editing. Also, internet, email and zoom/youtube stuff.
Thanks. I am at my wits end finding a new laptop.

I have a Yoga 13 inch. Great Dolby speakers, nice touch screen, slender and lightweight. The mousepad skips around a bit but overall worth the price.

Dell G5. Don't let the "gaming" spook you. It means awesome keyboard and decent graphics.

A MacBook Air with the new M1 chip will outperform nearly every Windows notebook out there, and it’s Apple’s entry-level notebook.
It does that without the need for a fan and gives you up to EIGHTEEN hours of battery life, while weighing in at just under 3lbs. To me it’s a no-brainer.

I would not get your computer from Best Buy. In fact no one should buy anything from Best Buy considering that their Return Policy is really terrible.
Most people don't realize you only have 15 days for a Return.
I purchased a TV from them a few years ago and it arrived with the screen bent. I set up the return and a second one arrived, also broken. I took into the store to return that one and the one in store was also broken.
If you have a Costco membership, get something from them. They offer a 2-year warranty.

I recommended this one to the old people at work. They got it and I set it up. It's cheap but powerful enough to do the things you want to do. Acer is a good brand. People will swear by this brand or that brand, but they are all basically designed to last two or three years. I'd get this one and be done with it. Amazon is easy to deal with in the event you need to make a return.
The only tricky thing is the S mode. You'll want to disable that first thing. It's not hard, and there are instructions online.

The thing you have to be careful with with Best Buy is that they have a lot of shitty models for name brand computers. You think you're buying a solid HP or Dell or whatever, but if you google the model numbers, you'll see that it's only sold at Best Buy. They are models priced cheap to draw you in but not worth buying. I can't remember what Best Buy workers call them. Not all the models they sell are like that but if you think you're getting a fantastic deal it is almost certainly one of them.
I'd look at a list of best PCs at your price point and then get one of those models from Amazon or directly from the manufacturers. That's how I found that Acer. And here's an HP I found the same way.
I use a Surface and I like it a lot but you probably don't need to spend $1500 on a PC. If that's your price range then by all means get a Surface.

(Damn DL won't let me post the link so I will try in the next post OP)
You've said you liked Dell OP and this looks quite good at Best Buy where you said you would buy the laptop from. If it's for work/business then it must be PC so it is corporate compatible. Ignore the Mac stans. Macs are corporate incompatible, use CYMK color (incompatible unless for professional printing) and they are double the price and impossible to upgrade and expensive to get repaired.
This Dell ticks all your boxes; 16 GB ram, 512 SSD & you can upgrade the screen size to 17" if you want. It's pricey but should last you 5 years. (get more storage with a portable hard drive 2TB or so.
16GB ram is a lot. Do you use Adobe software for tech writing? I'm an instructional Designer and I have 16 GBs to run Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Articulate, Captivate all at once. I got my desktop computer built to my specifications and then purchased two Dell UltraSharp U3219Q screens for graphic design to go with it. It's all perfect. I love it. Worth every cent.
For everyday use the Dell laptop keyboard is great but I recommend that you purchase a wireless keyboard/mouse set to provide extra ease of use when you need it.

Dell - Inspiron 7000 2-in-1 - 15.6" FHD Touch Laptop - 11th Gen Intel Core i7 - 16GB RAM - 512GB SSD + 32GB Optane - Silver Model:i7506-7958SLV-PUS SKU:6432552
That's the model I was talking about in R12. I can't get the link to post but you can find it on the Best Buy site with the SKU.

Second and third the "Do not buy computers at Best Buy" advice. They are cheaper and newer directly from the manufacturer, or even Amazon sometimes.

I would just get a dell from dell. They really have been one of the best in the past few years. even the dell outlet

Lets start with how much is your budget because my answer will depend on how much you want to spend.

ugh, such awful choices for where to get it.
and OP, you sound like you're ready to be fleeced when it's clear you really don't know much about laptops.
not trying to be insulting
but dell, like most companies of it's kind, is loaded with obnoxious crap... has a difficult warranty service and it's billing if you have to finance is a third party nightmare that has screwed thousands of people over. they'll gut you on interest even if they're the ones that make the mistake. one time is all it takes. and they reserve the right to change their terms at any time.
you need to be more specific about the type of video editing you mean but given your other standards, I'd peg you for a basic light casual user.
decide more on your budget and we can work from there.
I think you'd likely be confused if I asked whether you wanted an integrated or non-integrated graphic card, or really got into the specs of much else.
in my mind, your budget shouldn't be over a twelve hundred, you should expect to pay more than five hundred if you're sure it's a laptop you want though you might find a cheaper deal with a refurbished or an outright used model. if you want to go less in price but still do everything you've described you could also look at tablet hybrids (sometimes called flex or 2-in1) but the o/s options suck. the cheapest tend to be amazon, followed by android then google and gets pricier for other operating systems which still aren't the same as those on traditional laptops.. all very onto itself but it's consumer friendly.
honestly, I don't want to recommend anyone specific, I'd say look at the shops like amazon, ebay, walmart then do a search for the actual companies and buy it direct.. the usually have better financing deals that way and customizing options. actually, I'll link one but it's really too much power for you and you can save a lot more going for basic business model - there's a few brokers out there since usually they're bought in gross for offices and schools, so you could find one around 300 to 500 with no bells or whistles yet accomplishing everything you need it too.

Personally, I can't stand working on a laptop and will only do it if there are no other options. If I have to use a laptop at home, I'll get an external keyboard, monitor, and mouse.

r20 mini-pc are a decent alternative if you can't afford a pc. not exactly portable but there options to make it more mobile. they tend to burn hot, so they need some external cooling considerations but still if you already got a monitor, mouse, keyboard but your main rig died, a mini-pc is a cheap good alternative to get you by until you can afford another pc.
also a lot of cable cutters use them solely as a tv box, too. so, there's options for it's use even after you finally buy a pc or laptop. so it's not a wasted investment.

If you are concerned about typing - check out laptops with mechanical keyboards - but those are usually gaming PCs. - which is what I got for work actually. An ELEMENT laptop - Thin magnesium case, Intel EXO specs - has a RTX 2070, 64 gb of ram and 2 TB NVME drive - 144hz screen. - I work in technical sales so have to demo a lot of VMs - so the memory and space come in super handy. Typing on it is great - and it can play AAA games if I want to ( which I do when I travel ). - got mine open box at Microcenter for 1100.

OP, they all offer the same shit I’ll never use so I want you to be comfortable with the keyboard and you have to feel it out to know what works for you. The old MacBook air and older MacBook pro had great tactile feeling with all function keys available. Lenovo provided better feel on its high end stuff, but that was 2014-ish. Acer feels cheap for touch typing, but they pack a lot into what they sell.
You can overcome so many limitations of a PC laptops - except the keyboard. Seriously, go out and molest some shit before purchasing.

I am still trying to find the right laptop for me. The Keyboard is pretty major. I am considering the dell inspiron 7000 tablet. The keyboard kind of sucks though. you cannot see the letter/number on the keys because of the lighting. Anyone have this laptop? Do you recommend it?
So I need a great keyboard. One I can type on and i can see.
-tablet -16ram -512SSD -for business stuff, personal stuff (email, zoom, internet, etc.) Video editing. Word processing (ALOT) MS Word and Scrivener.

[quote]HP computers, desktops and laptops, are shit.
My partner does computer repair, he says HP are probably the most stable of the PCs with the least amount of problems. MACs are a different story. I do a lot of heavy graphic work video on a PC, owned about 4 HP desktops so far, no problems.
