Am I Uncouth for NOT liking Red Wine?
It’s winter but, I was telling my home girl that we need to go on a wine tour soon.
Everyone says you’re “supposed” to drink red wine with dinner. I’ve had all of them: Merlot, Cabernet, Sauvignon but they’re all fucking bitter and gross.
“Oh, but you haven’t had the RIGHT brand!”
Yeah but, nobody’s recommendations work.
Fuck your conventions. I’ll drink white all day and night. Anybody else struggle with red wine?

Not a wine drinker either, white or red. Its beer or bourbon for me.
That said I am kinda uncouth

Wine upsets my stomach, I would rather have a cocktail.
Who cares what people think, I would say a cocktail is more sophisticated than wine. Fuck the wine snobs.

Too bad that wine sampling at Trader Joe's has been shut down.
Any other places other than wine stores that were doing wine samples? Even wine stores had to stop samplings?
Maybe wine stores in Arizona and Florida never shut them down? But Trader Joe's would have to shut it down anywhere, as company policy?

Agreed, OP. All red wine tastes like vinegar to me. I'd rather have a light white wine anyday though r2 is also correct, Cosmo > wine.

Red wine can give some people headaches. Some reds can be extremely rich, full-bodied and mess with your head and stomach. I find the same true with some of the overly oaky, buttery chardonnays. Headache city, all of them.
I prefer white wine too, OP. Wine snobs that insist you have a red with beef, and white with fish need to mind their own business.
I've visited many wineries and tasted lots of interesting wines in different countries. If you want to try something nice to drink you might look for a nice, smooth, dry French rose. It doesn't need to be expensive. look for one from France in the $15-20 area.
Doing winery tours can be a fun weekend or day trip. Hire one of the many companies around that do the driving so you're able to enjoy it a lot more. I love the central coast of California wineries even more so than Napa, Mendocino etc. More laid back. You can do flights of red or white in many of them so skip the reds if that's your preference. What I believe you might benefit from is wine pairings rather than just tastings. With pairings you are offered food bites that pair with wines. You'd be amazed how a sprinkling of truffle salt on a cube of smoked gouda can enhance wine.... stuff like that. It's a nice experience and you learn a little too.

I pesonally prefer white wine or rose (I can't put the accent on the e, but it's the pink wine pronounced ro-zay). Red wine tends to leave this squeakiness on the teeth I find.

I prefer white wine over red personally. Especially in the winter when my lips get dried out, red stains my lips (I'm a guy).

R7, Thanks girl. I sauntered into my local liquor shop with a recommendation from a coworker and the wine lady steered me in another direction.
Oddly enough, she was having 50% off sale on all rosè, which I love!!
White it is!!! Thanks Queen.

I prefer Californian Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays to other types, after going through phases of Portuguese roses, German whites, Hungarian and Spanish reds, Italian pinot grigios, and sundry French wines.

Why would anyone drink something they don't like, just to impress others?
If it doesn't taste good to you, it doesn't taste good to you. What more is there to discuss?

Have you tried Syrah? It's probably my favorite red. I also love Tempranillo and Mendoza. I'm actually drinking some Beaujolais right now, slightly chilled. I don't blame you for disliking Cab Sav as it's never done anything for me. Merlot always makes me think of the film Sideways, but it's a reliable Thanksgiving wine that pairs well with turkey. I'll echo r8 and recommend rosé, but I prefer drier ones rather than sweet. If you love white, stick with it; I can't stand Sauvignon Blanc, but who cares?

I really like some red wines for cooking. They can be very tasty in homemade sangria or mulled wine during the winter.
For the evening glass of wine or with dinner, it's white wine all the way. My preference is German, some Italian whites. I haven't sampled many rose' wines, but it's definitely something to think about for future study.

never liked wine either until I tried Spanish wine. Temparnillio!! Or sangria. Mmmm.

I like both Red and White wines but prefer Whites by a country mile. If having with food, whites from the Rhône region or Rhône-style are probably my favorite. Also sparkling wine! Who says it needs to be for a special occasion?

I only drink white wine, but then I also put ice cubes in my wine, so I'm not exactly the best person to ask

I don't understand the problem. Is your friend insisting that you MUST drink red wine or else you cannot be her wine tour companion? If so, find somebody else to do that with. Life is too short to pretend to like something you don't in order to appear "couth."

Back in my drinking days, I'd have happily slurped up every ounce of red wine you didn't want, OP!

They said "brand"? Really?

No one says this. There are recommendations, such as red wine with steak or white wine with fish, but anyone who knows even a little about wine says "drink what you like."

It’s worth the expense to have a really good bottle of wine just occasionally. We go to Mallorca frequently, COVID notwithstanding, and always bring back a few bottles from Mortitx. It’s a really nice treat, and the quality is much better than industrialised cheaper wines. Some of them could strip paint.

My snobby grasping former-socialite UMC grandmother makes fun of me because I don’t really drink much and don’t like wine either. I have explained to her that I dislike feeling tipsy (and heady wine will get you there fast), I find the taste of fermented grapes disgusting, and that my other grandparent died of the drink, but these aren’t legit reasons to abstain in her eyes.
On the occasional weekend I do drink, I’ll either shot some neat whisky (if stressed), or take a beer or cider from the cooler to drink (if relaxed), rather than open a bottle to split with her, and it drives her nuts (as much as the fact I forgo makeup, skirts, and traditional wired balcony bras).
She’s a rude, unlikeable hag who is stuck in the past, anyways; bitter and picked as her nasty reds. She can keep it.

I am not a great fan of red either, OP. If I had to choose one I would go for one of the lighter ones. Sometimes I don’t mind a glass of Pinot Noir as it is fairly light. I also tend to prefer Italian whites. They seem to be fairly light and crispy compared to some others.

I'm a longtime beer drinker, but one summer tried a pinot grigio and really liked it. Couple of years later, I'm dining at a winery with friends and thought I'd order that nice wine I once drank. Ordered the wrong thing, pinot noir, and drank it because I didn't want to look like an idiot having ordered the wrong colour (and also because I didn't want to waste my money). Anyway, that little mistake started my love affair with red wine.

I am 71 and have had the equivalent of 3 alcoholic drinks in my life. I could always care less what anyone thought. I have never liked the taste of any alcohol no matter how many sips of any of them that I tried.
When people start smoking they cough a lot because the body is trying to reject it. The same with alcohol, not coughing but sometimes choking or burning when first drinking. I got past the coughing for smoking but knew if I started drinking and got past that I would probably end up being an alcoholic. Glad I never started and I finally did quit smoking.
Why do you care if anyone thinks you are uncouth? Am I uncouth because I don't drink at all?

Husbear and I lived on the California Central coast for many years. The J Lohr winery was just down the street from our house.
As a long standing aficionado of Hearty Burgundy, I found that putting Splenda in any red wine gave it the touch I needed.
Try pulling that stunt in front of the wine master at a winery. Lifts them right off the ground.

I love red wine, and cannot stand white wine at all- I find it too sweet. There was one white wine I tolerated, but it was because it was very dry. That said, I can only tolerate 2 drinks (of any kind), and then my mind says, "You don't need anymore", thanks to my dearly departed alcoholic Dad.

I'm just the opposite. I like red wine more than white. White wine tastes sour to me. I even drink red wine with fish. That being said, I prefer a good beer like a hoppy IPA. And for desert a chocolate stout.

Unfortunately because of quarantine, I’ve been a little invested in perfecting my drinking...SMH
You all are right, fuck what people think and drink what you like. I’ve already gotten my beer down.
My point is I want to go on a wine tasting because of ALL the varieties of red wine that exist, there’s got to be one for me, right?
