I think Richard Marx told several stories over the years about Luther's 'fabulous-ness'. Like crazy shopping sprees and gossiping about what people were wearing at award shows.

After LV died the family auctioned off his stuff and the company put hundreds of items, from clothes to sofas, paintings, kitchenware, vases, etc on a website ... it was over the top and a bit tacky for my taste. Richard was married to Cynthia for decades. I think they had three kids. She gave up her acting and singing career (by 1990, she literally stopped). Maybe it was an empty nest thing or they waited for when their kids were grown to divorce.

I thought it was sad that his mother was part of the reason he refused to come out, she was deeply religious. I remember watching his funeral and one of the firebrand preacher's sermons (it was said the preacher was his mother's favorite) was completely nuts. Very toxic environment for gay people.

I'm sure he had other reasons he didn't want to come out, financially it would have had a negative effect, because his core Black audience wouldn't have supported him.

I don't think being closeted killed him though, diabetes was the killer in the family. All his siblings died in their 50s and before him. He had one brother and 2 sisters, Luther was the youngest. His father died very young, all of them had problems with diabetes.
