Influencer Bretman Rock says separate clothing for men and women 'shouldn't even really be a thing'
[quote] "I don't only wear men's clothing — I actually have more women's clothing than I do men's," Rock said. "I will wear a woman's dress and a man's pant with it, so I really wanna switch up the labels of freakin' fashion."
[quote] "Men's clothing and women's clothing shouldn't even really be a thing," he added. "I feel like it should just be f------ clothing, period. I wanna change the fashion industry by saying 'f--- you' to gender norms and 'f--- your labels,' to be honest."

Ladyboy is the (not so literal) English translation for Kathoey. It is a Thai term that is very close to being the equivalent of a transgender woman. It can also encapsulate effeminate gay men.

Anyone can wear whatever they like. Who cares? I’m a woman who wears men’s Levi’s (because I’m slim-hipped and I enjoy actual pockets) and pea coat (again, pockets) and LL Bean boots.
It’s a lot more acceptable for women to wear men’s clothing. But if a man wants to wear a skirt and let his junk breathe, or torture his feet with high heels, it’s fine by me.

r18, I actually agree with him, too, and for the same reason you mentioned. I understand the bodytype argument when it comes to fitting. However, I'm looking at it from the perspective of style and comfort. It's ridiculous that it's okay for females to wear clothing styles and fabrics traditionally associated with males, but when a male does it (e.g., wearing a silk top or a skirt) people lose their mind and overthink it instead of considering he just likes that particular piece.

I actually agree; over the past few years I've actually started buying clothes from women's departments, mainly due to a better and more flattering fit. I have a few pairs of women's jeans that I like, and I am not above buying women's versions of mens shoes. As I've gotten older, I've started enjoying the cross between mens and womens looks (like sequins or florals for men). With that said, I am not about to go down the street in a skirt and blouse on stilettos. I'm not that bold yet and hope never to be.

Unless you are a 19 year old twig, you can't wear women's clothing. First off, their body types and build is different. Sure, a few women may be build like planks but even then, their legs and arms taper differently and shoulders and hips are different. I could NEVER wear women's clothing, it would look weird on my body ffs and just gauche. Personally, this shit has to stop. We are different than women and they are different than us and even bathrobes and sweats are different.
Let's also be clear on the fact that a lot of Western women like my sister, who is athletic and in tip-top shape, can't wear a lot of the clothing made in Asian countries because her hips and breasts don't fit. Lots of the reason Banana Republic lost clients was because their clothes were made such that when you go in, you see only Asian professional women and no other women. In fact, there was a recent article about how part of the reason for the whole stretch addition to fabrics was because with so many clothes made in China, they were losing sale in West because nobody could fit in them.

Women do not wear men's clothes. Women wear types of clothing traditionally only associated with men, such as trousers, but women are not wearing trousers that are made for men, they are wearing trousers specifically made for women, as their bodies are different. Men would also struggle to put women's trousers on.
I agree types of clothing shouldn't be limited to either gender, but they have to be specifically designed to take into account the differences in men's and women's bodies. Dresses, for example, should be specifically designed for men's bodies.

R80, presumably by anti-trans you mean the idea that there shouldn't be separate clothing for men and women but everyone should wear the same clothing. Because most trans are obsessed with the idea of wearing the clothing designed for the gender they wish they were. Transwomen dress in the most extreme form of women's clothing, almost a caricature, while transmen dress like 15-year-old teenage boys.
If anyone is maintaining gender differences in clothing, it's the trans.

R70? Your "mansplaining" is, of course, incorrect. I wear men's jeans. From the men's department. Made to fit men. They fit me very well (which is why I wear them), and I have been wearing them for many years.
I also wear "men's" T-shirts. I have been wearing them my entire adult life, including the one I have (now archived) from the March on Washington in 1993.
And guess what else? I wear "men's" shoes. I have exceptionally wide feet; when I was a child, my mother had to take me to a special shoe store to get my one pair of school shoes for the year (penny loafers) in a girl's size wide. Of course, when I was a teenager, I started wearing boy's sneakers to school, so my wide feet ceased to be a serious problem. I currently have a couple of pairs of shoes that are made for women (New Balance makes wide sizes in women's sneakers), but certainly all my motorcycle boots and my Clark's boots were made for men.
Back in the 70s when I marched in the women's lib marches, we always said, "It's not men's clothing if a woman is wearing it."
by Anonymous | reply 102 | May 22, 2021 12:14 PM

I saw an advertisement for a company that makes “non-binary” shoes. The whole concept of “non-binary” shoes means shoes made on a man’s last, and the vast majority of women can’t wear the shoes, unless they wear two pairs of socks or stuff innersoles in them to make them smaller. Then your heels are slipping or you’re getting blisters. Men’s shoes are drastically wider than most women’s feet.
In that case, they’re really making men’s only shoes and telling women they’re not important enough to deserve shoes that fit, only men deserve that. A lot of the shoes had flowers or other designs that women would like, only to find that there were no women’s sizes.
Same thing with pants. Most women have broader hips than men, because women give birth. It has nothing to do with being fat, their bone structure is different. Some women have narrower hips and can wear men’s pants without altering them, but they are a minority. The whole “everyone can wear each others’ clothes” idea most means all clothes are made for the male figure, and no clothes are made for the woman’s figure. Trying to erase women’s needs to make a political point is asinine, especially coming from an Asian male, because Asian women’s bodies and clothing are a lot narrower that most Europeans, Latinas or Africans, and they’re not representative of most women.
If men want to wear flowered clothes or whatever, make them in men’s sizes and everybody will be happy. A guy like this should go on a site like eShakti, where they have certain clothing styles and they are custom made to your measurements.

R104, then they can wear men’s pants, or have their pants altered in some cases. Go on the eShakti site, that’s a good place for people with unusual measurements who want to look good. They offer all their clothes with different sleeve lengths, neckline styles from the highest neckline to plunging necklines, and different hem lengths, and you can see how it will look on a model on the site.
I first became aware of that site because I saw a heavy woman in an advertisement wearing a really nice dress that was more stylish than is usually available for women her size, and it fitted her very well. And the neckline and sleeve length were more modest that average, so I went to the site. It’s a good site for very large or very small women, and they have a lot of styles that suit people of different figures. A lot of regular women’s clothing stores either have styles that fit small women and end at about a 36” bust, or the plus size styles are built for women with huge chests and very fat arms, which doesn’t apply to every woman. They are for very top heavy women. The sleeves on plus sizes are also very long. They assume large women are also very tall. My mom used to have trouble with that. She was 5 feet tall and they were making sleeves for 6’ tall women in her size. A lot of heavy older women are short, so that’s really common.

Your body might look fine in men's clothing (or you look like a tramp but people are too polite to point it out to you) but for most women men's clothing is just way too baggy and shapeless. Not every woman is into the Bille Eilish look, although even she's abandoned it now she's grown up a bit. You might like the look of men's jeans hanging off your arse or the crotch area rising each time you sit down, but a man is very unlikely to be able to get into a pair of women's skinny jeans. Some girls have big feet and you're obviously one of them but the average man would not be able to put on an average woman's shoe

Someone said my name?

What men fail to understand is that the semiotic of them wearing womens’ clothes is not equivalent to women wearing mens’ clothes, because of the designated signification of each.
From the day the womens’ fashion industry was born, it was about objectification, but that wasn’t the case with mens’ clothes. There’s an encoded sociopolitical history here that men in their entitled way refuse to respect. This isn’t just about costume and playing dress-up; clothes make hard statements about status, freedoms, and social power.
How is it fair that a white girl will get dragged through mud for wearing cornrows, but a white boy can wear a skimpy sundress and it’s not making mock? I seriously do not understand the double standard of those preaching here.

Are you sure you're a lesbian, R112? We're women, not girls. But then again, you already knew that.
And if you are a lesbian, how old are you? And even if you are close to my age, perhaps you should show a little respect for a woman who was fighting for your rights in the 1970s.

Where did I say anything about girls? In what way am I disrespecting you? By saying that, on the basis of the description of your wardrobe, you must look like a tramp?
Try being a little less pompous, you might be taken seriously.

From a practical standpoint, women’s clothing is cut differently. Try wearing a unisex t-shirt or sweatshirt when you have wide shoulders.

R108 because you're always looking to be offended and call people "anti-trans", I'm guessing.

Unisex fashion has been around for ages. But NOW it has become an issue, because trolls use it as an excuse to rant about Trans.
Was Rock's statement stupid? It was, because different people have different tastes. He can wear whatever the fuck he wants. Haters gonna hate.

R119 unisex fashion isn't the issue, dingus. It's the YouTube personality stating that we need to get rid of sexed clothing entirely. You're the main person talking about trans, because you are obsessed with whatever crusade you have on the DL.
Or to out it in feminist terms, it's just another privileged man wanting to take things away for women because he is representative of a certain sect of society that is trying to abolish sex-specific rights.
