This is so sad to hear. He was a part of my childhood, I grew up watching Saved by the Bell. It’s especially scary to me, I’m only 2 years younger and also have cancer that metastasised from my colon to lungs (currently 11 very small tumours in my lungs-not a smoker either!). I don’t have any real symptoms right now so I’m much luckier I guess. RIP Dustin

by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 1, 2021 6:22 PM |
It was small cell lung cancer. Sometimes cancer starts in a weird place, but pathology can usually identify the type of cancer. My neighbor has stage IV breast cancer, but never had a breast tumor. They found it in her lymph nodes and liver only. A friend died of lung cancer with nothing suspicious in her lungs. It appeared in her spine only. Cancer is a sneaky bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | February 1, 2021 6:23 PM |
R21, certain cancers are really aggressive and are only experienced by males, such as testicular, prostate, cancers. Lymphomas and blood cancers such as leukaemia, are also VERY aggressive, depending on the type of blood cancer or lymphoma that it falls under.
For whatever reasons, these blood cancers either get boys way more than girls, and can be deadly by the age of 10, or they show up later, and it’s common to see it in the ranges of men aged in their mid to late 40s
They are usually diagnosed at stage 4, and even when caught early, depending on the genetic and hereditary life expectancy within the biological relatives of the patient, the survival rate is often dismal.
I’ve known 2 guys who got this. Both healthy, non smokers, non drinkers, who both died within weeks to a few months of diagnosis of lymphoma.
One shot yo steroids when he was in high school to bulk up, the other one did nothing of the sort, as he was aware of his family’s medical history and knew he was at high risk.
The former of the two aforementioned gentlemen, had SAG insurance and tested regularly as advised, and died within a few weeks of his blood analysis.
The first, had been adopted, and had no familial medical history to better ascertain risk.
The good news is that prostate cancers are easily detected early and treated successfully, and the onset is at a specific age range. But deadly lymphomas, blood cancers and specific testicular cancers will take men out early, if they have no medical history or sometimes, even when they do.
Justin knew his medical history, and I am guessing he was diagnosed when undergoing routine lab tests for mitigation early on, if possible.

Poor guy--he did not have an easy life.
I've never quite understood the story of the other actors excluding him--whether it was just because he was mentally ill and behaved hatefully to them with his memoir, or whether it had more to do with the fact that most of them were shallow and pretty and shallow and pretty kids always gang up against the ugly kid. I would guess it was both, and both problems fed into one another.

Fuck all you bleeding heart cunts trashing his SBTB costars for "not letting him on the reboot." A.) It's not their decision, B.) Mario and Lark both have said it was because he asked for way more money than anyone else, and C.) he trashed them all to whomever would listen, essentially calling Tiffany and Elizabeth whores and Mark Paul and Mario serial rapists, pedophiles, and drug addicts. Even if that's true, they didn't owe this creep shit. It's sad that he died so young, but that doesn't take away from the fact he was a fucked up cunt and his career tanked because of his own decisions.

Lark did interviews when her appearance on the reboot came up that made it pretty clear she had spoken to him personally recently.

Variety is fucked up to use this picture of him.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | February 1, 2021 6:57 PM |
I must have muted the person in [R77]s reply but uh I actually agree with them on this point. He made a sex tape, then said it was a body double. He released a book that accused all of the cast members of ILLEGAL SEX AND DRUGS which really only might fit Berkley's brand. Then he said the ghostwriter fabricated the whole thing. Why would they want to work with him again? So he can publish another ridiculous book that threatens their careers full of god knows what? Then, he stabbed a guy in a bar. When do you draw the line on wanting to work with someone? After they've tarnished your reputation or after they've stabbed someone?
His loss is tragic and I believe it is sad we won't get to see more of his work. But I don't think the original cast of Saved By The Bell is obligated to continue working with him.
Lark is another story; she's back after the "feud" was aired during the pandemic as a smaller cameo role I believe. They did treat her terribly due to mental illness and recognized this IIRC.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 1, 2021 6:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 1, 2021 7:01 PM |
Most with lung cancer never smoked.
Lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) is the second most common cancer in both men and women (not counting skin cancer). In men, prostate cancer is more common, while in women breast cancer is more common.

[quote] people aren't going for annual physicals or to get random body pains checked...as cancer and other diseases progress beyond repair
Actually R54 that's not the truth. I encountered someone saying something similar late last year - they had provided the below link as supporting evidence. I did a little further investigation and this is what I came up with.
Based on a direct use of last years numbers as basis for this years numbers they said they’re missing 370 cases. And allowed for a possible 2000 based on ?? But a 600% margin of error seems……Hrm.
Anyway again if you read further it seems they’re at 100% detection for breast cancer (I thought everyone was saying there would be enormous numbers of missed breast cancer cases) 95% for lung cancer (within margin of error), and 65% of prostate cancer cases. So prostate cancer is where the large miss of cases lies (in the 3 they presented). Now if we look at prostate cancer specifically, we see two things. People diagnosed at early stages tend to have an extremely high rate of survival (around-100% 5year survival rate for stage 1&2) however that drops once it’s diagnosed at stage 3 significantly. However, few people are diagnosed at stage 3 because it’s a slow growing cancer and is typically picked up earlier with screening. Stage 3 is where pain also usually prompts a medical investigation resulting in diagnosis. Point being people that are diagnosed at stage 3 have not taken up their screenings. One can extrapolate that stage 3 cases will be diagnosed nonetheless this year(people in pain are still attending GPs) and that the missed cases will be almost exclusively stage 1/2, and those in stage 1 or 2 will just have a diagnosis delayed, but once they’ve previously taken part previously in screening its verrrrrry unlikely the disease will progress to a stage where their prognosis suffers much.
I understand that it's fun to scare-monger but I don't think any of the figures bear out that reality. Using Dustin's death to add weight to this seems......ignorant and reckless at best and veers very quickly towards cynical and mean-spirited.
TL;DR it obv hasn’t played out yet so is impossible to tell but this doesn’t look so significant.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | February 1, 2021 7:07 PM |

Lots of young actors are talented as kids but are not as adults. Corey Feldman and Lindsey Lohan are other examples. I always thought Dustin was one of the most talented of the cast since his character changed the most throughout the series. He started out as a nerd, then became a dork, and then something else entirely during the later seasons.

SBTB wasn't high art, but it probably more accurately captured the vapidity of American teenagers vs. the pretentious blather of something like Dawson's Crack. Or worse, something like Euphoria, which makes high schools look like Boogie Nights in training.

I don’t envy them.
There is someone in my community who was very destructive toward an organIzation I’m part of — tried to destroy it, and me. Her young son was killed fairly recently. No one deserves that, but we were all in a tough spot and people on the outside who didn’t know all that transpired expected us to issue a statement supporting he. No win. (I think we did the right thing.)

He was lucky to be cast on a long running show, but I think he was treated very poorly and surely felt ostracized. He was younger than his co-stars and cast in the role of the ugly loser geek. I don't blame his co-stars as much as I blame the producers of the show -- they never let his character grow up and become a man, they always used Screech as the butt of the joke. It's no wonder that he turned out the way that he did.
Rest in peace, Dustin.

[quote]How many of you would be devastated by the death of a coworker from 25 years ago? Not even counting his trash talking the cast I would be a bit rocked.
They may have been reduced to coworkers by 1994 but they worked together and went to school together when they were kids. If one of my old classmates, even if I wasn't close to them after graduation, died at 44 I'd still be a bit shocked even if I hadn't thought about them in years.
Overall, he may have not been a great person to the cast but I'm sure he didn't start out that way. Child actors have issues and that cast was no different even if they nearly all turned out relatively well in the end. (Lark's condition isn't her fault and prior to that she was doing really well on TV and in soaps.) It had to suck playing the geeky guy no one wants to date and the butt of every joke for years. The man died and people are still saying, "Screech" died.
[quote]I wonder if the new show will address his death or just leave Screech "on the space station"
I think it will go the same way as having Lark Voorhies on the show went: they'll get, as much as possible, guilted and forced into it because it's not really about them as much as it is about the people that watched the show. Also at the end of the day it's about the characters remembering that character and not necessarily about their own relationships with the actor.

Not so much as "ignored", but Dustin Diamond feared the PR fuss if he went to hospital or otherwise word got out he was seeking medical care, so he just let things go. That was a huge mistake but in one way or another fairly common, people find lumps on body, changes in moles, feeling out of sorts, etc... but don't want to make a fuss.
It was Dustin Diamond's gf who finally dragged him to seek medical attention, and we know the rest.
Very sad story and end to a man who left this world far too soon.

That is what late DD and his gf have said, and I don't doubt it is true.
Do some research on late Dustin Diamond's life especially post SBTB and you'll have some answers.
His parents basically blew through all his earnings as a child actor from SBTB. When sitcom ended Dustin Diamond was basically broke and turned to various gigs to make money, none of them largely successful but did land him media coverage (both favorable and not so much). One of those money making ventures gone bad was that tell all book about cast/crew of SBTB which earned him scorn all way around. That bit meant he was never asked back when SBTB rebooted...
Then there was Dustin Diamond's public plea on Howard Stern's radio show to get people to pay $15/each for autographed t-shirts. DD needed to raise funds to keep his home from being foreclosed upon and that was only way he could raise large enough amount of money in time. During that interview DD basically stated he was broke and had few other ways of getting the money.
All this plus more (such as that infamous sex tape) largely yes in DD's mind would draw media attention if word got out he was "ill". No, it doesn't make sense to either you or I, but neither of us were Dustin Diamond...
Like Gary Coleman, Dustin Diamond joins a not so short list of child actors whose fortunes were badly used by their parents. One thought CA had laws about such things, but apparently not.
OTOH you look at Bill Mumy whose parents not only largely left his child actor earnings alone, but saved/invested wisely on their son's behalf.

The thing is that it was a show you jerked off to when you were 12 or 13 and there was no other option. I’d never call the show beloved, it’s probably the worst successful sitcom in history. But it had magnetism.
But Screech never fit in. He was the uggo that got beaten on as a character and probably in real life by his much hotter cast mates.
Dustin Diamond suffered from Eve Plumb syndrome.
by Anonymous | reply 219 | February 4, 2021 8:59 AM |

I mean...MPG and Mario Lopez were treated like gods, the ladies like princesses, and Dustin was treated like...Screech.
Hell, the crew probably referred to him as Screech behind his back

R224 REALLY? This ain't the riddle of the Sphinx, dude.
How about it's common sense? Do you really think famous teenagers who spend hours a day on the same set act any differently than regular teens in Jr High or High school? You clearly haven't read or listened to any interviews with actors who starred on TV shows about adolescence WHILE actually going through adolescence. Cliques develop and people are left out. Those who are left out--get older and write books about it. Like Dustin Diamond.
I mean...what are you on about?
