He wasn't saved by anything.

Screech is gone! No way.

by Anonymousreply 1February 1, 2021 5:55 PM

Sad. That happened fast.

by Anonymousreply 2February 1, 2021 5:56 PM

Has Hayley Mills commented yet?

by Anonymousreply 3February 1, 2021 5:56 PM

Holy cow.

by Anonymousreply 4February 1, 2021 5:56 PM

That was speed-y.

by Anonymousreply 5February 1, 2021 5:57 PM

He never smoked or had any significant exposure to secondhand smoke. Scary.

by Anonymousreply 6February 1, 2021 5:58 PM

Wow! That is sad.

by Anonymousreply 7February 1, 2021 5:59 PM

Damn, that was quick, which I guess could be seen as merciful.

Can I have his unsold dildoes?

by Anonymousreply 8February 1, 2021 5:59 PM

It spread to his lungs from somewhere else, per the linked article r6.

by Anonymousreply 9February 1, 2021 5:59 PM

He wasn’t a smoker?! That is terrifying. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 10February 1, 2021 6:01 PM

Yikes. I just know this is going to happen to me.

by Anonymousreply 11February 1, 2021 6:01 PM

Furthermore the reason they went looking for it when he got sick is because it ran in his family. It killed his mother as well.

by Anonymousreply 12February 1, 2021 6:03 PM

He went from 1st round of chemo to “breathing machine” to hospice in 2 weeks??

by Anonymousreply 13February 1, 2021 6:03 PM

His career was already dead, so this is working out well for him

by Anonymousreply 14February 1, 2021 6:04 PM

A neighbor had lung cancer, and never smoked...died before Thanksgiving last year. It was less than two years, after being diagnosed.

by Anonymousreply 15February 1, 2021 6:04 PM

This is so sad to hear. He was a part of my childhood, I grew up watching Saved by the Bell. It’s especially scary to me, I’m only 2 years younger and also have cancer that metastasised from my colon to lungs (currently 11 very small tumours in my lungs-not a smoker either!). I don’t have any real symptoms right now so I’m much luckier I guess. RIP Dustin

by Anonymousreply 16February 1, 2021 6:06 PM

RIP!

That was so fast!

didn't he just start chemo?

by Anonymousreply 17February 1, 2021 6:06 PM

Gone too soon. RIP

by Anonymousreply 18February 1, 2021 6:06 PM

I never watched Saved By the Bell, even in middle school I thought it was a stupid show for retards (see also: Full House) but this is sad.

by Anonymousreply 19February 1, 2021 6:07 PM

Diagnosed with HIGHLY aggressive cancer, blood cancer, such as leukaemia or lymphoma, a few weeks ago. Hereditary and common in his family, from what has been alleged.

RIP, Screech.

by Anonymousreply 20February 1, 2021 6:07 PM

It spread to his lungs did they ever say where the cancer spread from to begin with? It seems like we’re missing so much information.

by Anonymousreply 21February 1, 2021 6:08 PM

Diamonds aren't forever.

by Anonymousreply 22February 1, 2021 6:08 PM

Susan Dey has a chance to send her condolences early.

by Anonymousreply 23February 1, 2021 6:08 PM

Ask not for whom the bell tolls...

by Anonymousreply 24February 1, 2021 6:08 PM

Wow. I thought he just faked it to get on the SBTB reboot.

by Anonymousreply 25February 1, 2021 6:10 PM

That’s a real shame.

He was great as the bailiff on the first few seasons of Night Court.

by Anonymousreply 26February 1, 2021 6:11 PM

I hope his costars who have been really rude to him/ excluding him from reunions, reboot etc at least have something nice to say about him.

by Anonymousreply 27February 1, 2021 6:11 PM

That what tragic- born with those cancer genes. Can that really be prevented proactively? Feel sorry for him and his loved ones.

by Anonymousreply 28February 1, 2021 6:12 PM

What was loaded on his Sony Discman?

by Anonymousreply 29February 1, 2021 6:12 PM

R27, Lark Voorhies plans a one-woman off-Broadway show about her grief.

by Anonymousreply 30February 1, 2021 6:13 PM

His father Neil must be devastated right now.

by Anonymousreply 31February 1, 2021 6:14 PM

I always thought he was an annoying douchebag, but it’s terrible when anyone that young. And even worse that a vile pig like Rush Limbaugh STILL won’t die.

by Anonymousreply 32February 1, 2021 6:15 PM

Yes ^^

by Anonymousreply 33February 1, 2021 6:16 PM

Lark was the only one he seemed to be on good terms with at the end. The cast initially excluded her too but loved her as the problem was her mental and not her.

Apparently the guy also found a lump in his neck which he ignored for a while. He had some issues with the law in the past too. Sad for this to happen to him though. He was part of many of our childhoods.

by Anonymousreply 34February 1, 2021 6:18 PM

.....the Rush Limbaugh part ...

by Anonymousreply 35February 1, 2021 6:18 PM

Ugh can Rush die already

by Anonymousreply 36February 1, 2021 6:19 PM

OMG hi Larry King/r31!

by Anonymousreply 37February 1, 2021 6:19 PM

That’s not the way cancer is supposed to work?

by Anonymousreply 38February 1, 2021 6:19 PM

It was wrong of him to be excluded from the reboot. He could have used the work and I am sure his coworkers could have pushed for it. They better not start the crocodile tears now.

by Anonymousreply 39February 1, 2021 6:20 PM

[quote] I never watched Saved By the Bell, even in middle school I thought it was a stupid show for retards (see also: Full House) but this is sad.

R16 I hope things get better for you.

by Anonymousreply 41February 1, 2021 6:21 PM

Morphine drip?

by Anonymousreply 42February 1, 2021 6:21 PM

Sad. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 43February 1, 2021 6:22 PM

I hope Mario Lopez doesn’t make it ALL ABOUT MARIO!

by Anonymousreply 44February 1, 2021 6:22 PM

It was small cell lung cancer. Sometimes cancer starts in a weird place, but pathology can usually identify the type of cancer. My neighbor has stage IV breast cancer, but never had a breast tumor. They found it in her lymph nodes and liver only. A friend died of lung cancer with nothing suspicious in her lungs. It appeared in her spine only. Cancer is a sneaky bitch.

by Anonymousreply 45February 1, 2021 6:23 PM

R21, certain cancers are really aggressive and are only experienced by males, such as testicular, prostate, cancers. Lymphomas and blood cancers such as leukaemia, are also VERY aggressive, depending on the type of blood cancer or lymphoma that it falls under.

For whatever reasons, these blood cancers either get boys way more than girls, and can be deadly by the age of 10, or they show up later, and it’s common to see it in the ranges of men aged in their mid to late 40s

They are usually diagnosed at stage 4, and even when caught early, depending on the genetic and hereditary life expectancy within the biological relatives of the patient, the survival rate is often dismal.

I’ve known 2 guys who got this. Both healthy, non smokers, non drinkers, who both died within weeks to a few months of diagnosis of lymphoma.

One shot yo steroids when he was in high school to bulk up, the other one did nothing of the sort, as he was aware of his family’s medical history and knew he was at high risk.

The former of the two aforementioned gentlemen, had SAG insurance and tested regularly as advised, and died within a few weeks of his blood analysis.

The first, had been adopted, and had no familial medical history to better ascertain risk.

The good news is that prostate cancers are easily detected early and treated successfully, and the onset is at a specific age range. But deadly lymphomas, blood cancers and specific testicular cancers will take men out early, if they have no medical history or sometimes, even when they do.

Justin knew his medical history, and I am guessing he was diagnosed when undergoing routine lab tests for mitigation early on, if possible.

by Anonymousreply 46February 1, 2021 6:24 PM

I have known two people who were not smokers and did not live with smokers who got lung cancer. Both died very soon after being diagnosed (weeks) and were under 50.

by Anonymousreply 47February 1, 2021 6:24 PM

Whatever happened to the white guy with yellow skin?

by Anonymousreply 48February 1, 2021 6:24 PM

Did they exclude him when they were teenagers?

Damn, I'm probably going to go look into SBTB history now.

R16 that’s bad luck I’m sorry. Hope treatment goes to plan and you make a recovery.

by Anonymousreply 52February 1, 2021 6:28 PM

Poor guy--he did not have an easy life.

I've never quite understood the story of the other actors excluding him--whether it was just because he was mentally ill and behaved hatefully to them with his memoir, or whether it had more to do with the fact that most of them were shallow and pretty and shallow and pretty kids always gang up against the ugly kid. I would guess it was both, and both problems fed into one another.

by Anonymousreply 53February 1, 2021 6:29 PM

I told you bitches this was gonna happen. Due to fuckers not wearing masks and turning the pandemic into a worldwide disaster, people aren't going for annual physicals or to get random body pains checked...as cancer and other diseases progress beyond repair. This will be repeated for the new few years with your friends, family, and famous people finding out too late.

Get checked.

by Anonymousreply 54February 1, 2021 6:30 PM

Yikes, R46, your post should come with a trigger warning for us hypochondriacs.

by Anonymousreply 55February 1, 2021 6:30 PM

Screech grew into his looks...was good looking later...but yes, shallow.

by Anonymousreply 56February 1, 2021 6:31 PM

Shit. That was fast.

My brother and I grew up on Saved by the Bell. Weird to think Screech is gone now.

by Anonymousreply 57February 1, 2021 6:32 PM

[quote] I told you bitches this was gonna happen.

Why did the great god Apollo affix such a dreadful curse to you, O far-seeing prophetess Cassandra, that none of us should heed your infallible predictions? Shame upon the earth!

by Anonymousreply 58February 1, 2021 6:33 PM

Always felt sorry for the guy. I don’t think the other cast members really included him in their little clique. He also wrote a tell-all book about them. I believe he said a couple of girls accused Mario Lopez of rape but they were paid off, and that all the guys had each slept with the girls (Mark-Paul, Mario, Tyffani, and Elizabeth). Don’t remember the rest.

by Anonymousreply 59February 1, 2021 6:33 PM

I usually have something snarky to say but this is really tragically sad. Way too young!

by Anonymousreply 60February 1, 2021 6:33 PM

Wow. Sad news.

by Anonymousreply 61February 1, 2021 6:33 PM

Response to R53....

by Anonymousreply 62February 1, 2021 6:34 PM

Mario Lopez is a piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 65February 1, 2021 6:38 PM

First Luke Perry, now Dustin Diamond. Has anyone questioned Tiffani Thiessen?

by Anonymousreply 70February 1, 2021 6:40 PM

Fuck all you bleeding heart cunts trashing his SBTB costars for "not letting him on the reboot." A.) It's not their decision, B.) Mario and Lark both have said it was because he asked for way more money than anyone else, and C.) he trashed them all to whomever would listen, essentially calling Tiffany and Elizabeth whores and Mark Paul and Mario serial rapists, pedophiles, and drug addicts. Even if that's true, they didn't owe this creep shit. It's sad that he died so young, but that doesn't take away from the fact he was a fucked up cunt and his career tanked because of his own decisions.

by Anonymousreply 71February 1, 2021 6:42 PM

[quote]Then you must have not had many friends and I think I can guess why.

It was a lame show for dumb kids. I think Saved By the Bell Might have been a regional thing, too. I don't remember it being very popular in Southern New England, where I grew up.

by Anonymousreply 72February 1, 2021 6:43 PM

[quote] Lark was the only one he seemed to be on good terms with at the end.

Not true. Mario was probably on the best terms with him out of all of them. He had Dustin on his show not too long ago.

by Anonymousreply 73February 1, 2021 6:44 PM

[quote] I hope Mario Lopez doesn’t make it ALL ABOUT MARIO!

As long as he's semi-naked, Mario can make it about whatever he wants.

by Anonymousreply 74February 1, 2021 6:45 PM

I’ve known several people who have/had lung cancer that never smoked. No second hand smoke, either. One has an extensive family history of lung cancer. The others really don’t know. Sometimes shit just happens.

by Anonymousreply 75February 1, 2021 6:46 PM

Dana Reeve also died from lung cancer at 44. She never smoked and never lived with a smoker.

by Anonymousreply 76February 1, 2021 6:49 PM

The cast was asked during reboot interviews if they'd spoken with Dustin Diamond recently and they all said no. Some said they hadn't spoken to him since the show ended.

Lark did interviews when her appearance on the reboot came up that made it pretty clear she had spoken to him personally recently.

[quote]Fuck all you bleeding heart cunts trashing his SBTB costars for "not letting him on the reboot."

Mark Paul has entered the chat.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 82February 1, 2021 6:57 PM

I must have muted the person in [R77]s reply but uh I actually agree with them on this point. He made a sex tape, then said it was a body double. He released a book that accused all of the cast members of ILLEGAL SEX AND DRUGS which really only might fit Berkley's brand. Then he said the ghostwriter fabricated the whole thing. Why would they want to work with him again? So he can publish another ridiculous book that threatens their careers full of god knows what? Then, he stabbed a guy in a bar. When do you draw the line on wanting to work with someone? After they've tarnished your reputation or after they've stabbed someone?

His loss is tragic and I believe it is sad we won't get to see more of his work. But I don't think the original cast of Saved By The Bell is obligated to continue working with him.

Lark is another story; she's back after the "feud" was aired during the pandemic as a smaller cameo role I believe. They did treat her terribly due to mental illness and recognized this IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 83February 1, 2021 6:57 PM

[quote]but uh I actually agree with them on this point.

Uh I never said that it wasn't justified.

I was just saying Lark spoke to him recently and made a comment about the poster's rage.

:)

Lung cancer is devastating. It isn't uncommon for people to die fairly quickly.

by Anonymousreply 85February 1, 2021 7:01 PM

Most with lung cancer never smoked.

Lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) is the second most common cancer in both men and women (not counting skin cancer). In men, prostate cancer is more common, while in women breast cancer is more common.

The more you know...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 86February 1, 2021 7:02 PM

by Anonymousreply 87February 1, 2021 7:07 PM

[quote] people aren't going for annual physicals or to get random body pains checked...as cancer and other diseases progress beyond repair

Actually R54 that's not the truth. I encountered someone saying something similar late last year - they had provided the below link as supporting evidence. I did a little further investigation and this is what I came up with.

Based on a direct use of last years numbers as basis for this years numbers they said they’re missing 370 cases. And allowed for a possible 2000 based on ?? But a 600% margin of error seems……Hrm.

Anyway again if you read further it seems they’re at 100% detection for breast cancer (I thought everyone was saying there would be enormous numbers of missed breast cancer cases) 95% for lung cancer (within margin of error), and 65% of prostate cancer cases. So prostate cancer is where the large miss of cases lies (in the 3 they presented). Now if we look at prostate cancer specifically, we see two things. People diagnosed at early stages tend to have an extremely high rate of survival (around-100% 5year survival rate for stage 1&2) however that drops once it’s diagnosed at stage 3 significantly. However, few people are diagnosed at stage 3 because it’s a slow growing cancer and is typically picked up earlier with screening. Stage 3 is where pain also usually prompts a medical investigation resulting in diagnosis. Point being people that are diagnosed at stage 3 have not taken up their screenings. One can extrapolate that stage 3 cases will be diagnosed nonetheless this year(people in pain are still attending GPs) and that the missed cases will be almost exclusively stage 1/2, and those in stage 1 or 2 will just have a diagnosis delayed, but once they’ve previously taken part previously in screening its verrrrrry unlikely the disease will progress to a stage where their prognosis suffers much.

I understand that it's fun to scare-monger but I don't think any of the figures bear out that reality. Using Dustin's death to add weight to this seems......ignorant and reckless at best and veers very quickly towards cynical and mean-spirited.

TL;DR it obv hasn’t played out yet so is impossible to tell but this doesn’t look so significant.

Not true r86. While it is true that many with lung cancer never smoked, it is not the majority.

by Anonymousreply 89February 1, 2021 7:11 PM

[R84] I'm glad I didn't see the comment; I'm sure it was hateful and full o' rage. I hadn't seen anything defending the cast so like an egomaniac threw it out there, with no regard. [quote] that's what I thought when MPG called Dustin a "comedic genius".

Lots of young actors are talented as kids but are not as adults. Corey Feldman and Lindsey Lohan are other examples. I always thought Dustin was one of the most talented of the cast since his character changed the most throughout the series. He started out as a nerd, then became a dork, and then something else entirely during the later seasons.

SBTB wasn't high art, but it probably more accurately captured the vapidity of American teenagers vs. the pretentious blather of something like Dawson's Crack. Or worse, something like Euphoria, which makes high schools look like Boogie Nights in training.

The cast has been expressing their condolences. They are in a terrible spot since everyone is waiting for them to comment. But their sentiments seem authentic.

I don’t envy them.

There is someone in my community who was very destructive toward an organIzation I’m part of — tried to destroy it, and me. Her young son was killed fairly recently. No one deserves that, but we were all in a tough spot and people on the outside who didn’t know all that transpired expected us to issue a statement supporting he. No win. (I think we did the right thing.)

by Anonymousreply 180February 2, 2021 1:03 AM

He was lucky to be cast on a long running show, but I think he was treated very poorly and surely felt ostracized. He was younger than his co-stars and cast in the role of the ugly loser geek. I don't blame his co-stars as much as I blame the producers of the show -- they never let his character grow up and become a man, they always used Screech as the butt of the joke. It's no wonder that he turned out the way that he did.

Rest in peace, Dustin.

by Anonymousreply 181February 2, 2021 1:04 AM

I agree, r181; the producers did Dustin/Screech dirty in the later seasons. I also agree that SBTB was a shit show, but it was part of my childhood, and it’s one of those shows I like to hate watch.

by Anonymousreply 182February 2, 2021 1:08 AM

I wonder if the new show will address his death or just leave Screech "on the space station"

by Anonymousreply 183February 2, 2021 1:11 AM

[quote]How many of you would be devastated by the death of a coworker from 25 years ago? Not even counting his trash talking the cast I would be a bit rocked.

They may have been reduced to coworkers by 1994 but they worked together and went to school together when they were kids. If one of my old classmates, even if I wasn't close to them after graduation, died at 44 I'd still be a bit shocked even if I hadn't thought about them in years.

Overall, he may have not been a great person to the cast but I'm sure he didn't start out that way. Child actors have issues and that cast was no different even if they nearly all turned out relatively well in the end. (Lark's condition isn't her fault and prior to that she was doing really well on TV and in soaps.) It had to suck playing the geeky guy no one wants to date and the butt of every joke for years. The man died and people are still saying, "Screech" died.

[quote]I wonder if the new show will address his death or just leave Screech "on the space station"

I think it will go the same way as having Lark Voorhies on the show went: they'll get, as much as possible, guilted and forced into it because it's not really about them as much as it is about the people that watched the show. Also at the end of the day it's about the characters remembering that character and not necessarily about their own relationships with the actor.

by Anonymousreply 184February 2, 2021 1:21 AM

🤔 He blew a lot of smoke out of his ass.

Not so much as "ignored", but Dustin Diamond feared the PR fuss if he went to hospital or otherwise word got out he was seeking medical care, so he just let things go. That was a huge mistake but in one way or another fairly common, people find lumps on body, changes in moles, feeling out of sorts, etc... but don't want to make a fuss.

It was Dustin Diamond's gf who finally dragged him to seek medical attention, and we know the rest.

Very sad story and end to a man who left this world far too soon.

I agree with R181 that the producers/writers made Screech's character the butt of the joke for too long. It reminds me of how stupid the writers always made Rose on 'The Golden Girls'. The difference is Betty White was an established actress who knew how to handle a character like that whereas Diamond was a child star who was stuck as the eternal geek.

R198

That is what late DD and his gf have said, and I don't doubt it is true.

Do some research on late Dustin Diamond's life especially post SBTB and you'll have some answers.

His parents basically blew through all his earnings as a child actor from SBTB. When sitcom ended Dustin Diamond was basically broke and turned to various gigs to make money, none of them largely successful but did land him media coverage (both favorable and not so much). One of those money making ventures gone bad was that tell all book about cast/crew of SBTB which earned him scorn all way around. That bit meant he was never asked back when SBTB rebooted...

Then there was Dustin Diamond's public plea on Howard Stern's radio show to get people to pay $15/each for autographed t-shirts. DD needed to raise funds to keep his home from being foreclosed upon and that was only way he could raise large enough amount of money in time. During that interview DD basically stated he was broke and had few other ways of getting the money.

All this plus more (such as that infamous sex tape) largely yes in DD's mind would draw media attention if word got out he was "ill". No, it doesn't make sense to either you or I, but neither of us were Dustin Diamond...

Like Gary Coleman, Dustin Diamond joins a not so short list of child actors whose fortunes were badly used by their parents. One thought CA had laws about such things, but apparently not.

OTOH you look at Bill Mumy whose parents not only largely left his child actor earnings alone, but saved/invested wisely on their son's behalf.

by Anonymousreply 203February 2, 2021 6:03 PM

You like saying his full name, don’t you?

by Anonymousreply 204February 2, 2021 6:13 PM

Make up your mind gramps. If abbreviations are used too often people on DL moan, use full names and people like you moan. It must be tiresome being old with nothing else to do but troll internet forums looking for things to correct and or complain about.

by Anonymousreply 205February 2, 2021 6:26 PM

Really? You’re not serious.

Have you ever read anything? Once you establish the person there’s no reason to consistently say the full name. You easily could’ve said Dustin OR Diamond. You didn’t have to constantly refer to him as “late Dustin Diamond.” That’s just pure idiocy.

The thing is that it was a show you jerked off to when you were 12 or 13 and there was no other option. I’d never call the show beloved, it’s probably the worst successful sitcom in history. But it had magnetism.

But Screech never fit in. He was the uggo that got beaten on as a character and probably in real life by his much hotter cast mates.

Dustin Diamond suffered from Eve Plumb syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 219February 4, 2021 8:59 AM

R200, Betty suffered fools gladly on GG. The jokes about her intelligence were ironic because Betty was no dummy off screen.

My sympathy always went to Bea, who was the brunt of every ugly, mannish and humpback joke. That stuff really hurt her feelings.

by Anonymousreply 220February 4, 2021 9:02 AM

He had the kind of features that look better on a middle-aged guy, than a young guy.

by Anonymousreply 221February 4, 2021 9:08 AM

Yeah, he did the book, but I can imagine how they treated him during and after the show. I'm sure that he and Lark had each other's backs because they were considered second string and treated as such. He had to feel CRAZY resentment to even consider writing that book. I mean...MPG and Mario Lopez were treated like gods, the ladies like princesses, and Dustin was treated like...Screech.

Hell, the crew probably referred to him as Screech behind his back

by Anonymousreply 224February 5, 2021 12:41 AM

R224 REALLY? This ain't the riddle of the Sphinx, dude.

How about it's common sense? Do you really think famous teenagers who spend hours a day on the same set act any differently than regular teens in Jr High or High school? You clearly haven't read or listened to any interviews with actors who starred on TV shows about adolescence WHILE actually going through adolescence. Cliques develop and people are left out. Those who are left out--get older and write books about it. Like Dustin Diamond.

I mean...what are you on about?

by Anonymousreply 225February 5, 2021 9:49 AM

[quote] Those who are left out--get older and write books about it. Like Dustin Diamond.

Dustin said he didn’t write that book and it was mostly fiction, so I don’t know what you’re on about. You don’t have any better idea of what went on behind the SBTB scenes than any other rando. You’re just speculating and generalizing, making baseless accusations.
