How is Jeff Palmer still alive?

I know one who has been HIV+ since the late 80s and he is still alive and several friends, relatives and co workers younger than him have died from heart attacks, pancreatic cancer and automobile accidents. HIV is not he absolute death sentence it was originally thought to be and my friend was the first person I knew who had it and he's fine. I do know 2 other people who died from it rather quickly in the early 90s.

I really think this would somehow make the 'news' (i.e. be known via the internet) if Jeff Palmer passed away.

The only people I know who have been HIV+ for 25 years or more have been on meds that entire time. A lot of them look fine, never been in the hospital and test undetectable. The one thing they had in common is that they started drug therapy long before they got sick.

A lot of guys back then waited until they hit bottom to start any kind of real therapy, All the ones I knew who distrusted western medicine are dead now. They tried everything from Chinese herbs, to magic mushrooms, to enemas with Bitter Melon. They tried praying, alternative religion and spiritual enlightenment. The only one they would not try was modern medicine. Irronicly that was the only thing at the end of the day that could have saved their lives.

There are people who have a special gene mutation that renders the virus ineffective, but it's really rare like 1 in a million. They can test for that now.

It was not *thought to be" deadly, it WAS deadly. HIV is absolutely a death sentence for 99% of the infected if untreated. Thousands died before anyone lifted a finger to create a treatment for it. I was only 15 when young, beautiful, healthy young men began dropping like flies. Like wasting away and dying in a matter of weeks. There are generations of mentors, activists, artists, advocates, role models and leaders missing from the Gay male community because they loved other men and it was fatal. May have started as an old man, in recent years when the drugs have become very very good with no heavy side effects. I know a non-famous person in the same boat. My one of my best friend is a long term non-progressor. He’s been HIV+ since about 1988 or even earlier he’s not sure and until recently had never taken any medication for it. But at 58, he’s started HIV treatment, not because he needed it, but because his doctor said at his age who knows how his immune system will change. And admittedly, if anyone sneezes near him he’ll catch a cold. So he’s in bed with a mild cold occasionally. But has never had any HIV related illnesses.

Not that this matters but he’s absolutely gorgeous even at his age and still has a great body. He jokes that the only exercise he does is picking up a fork and lifting it to his mouth. Also he’s is a regular at the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, etc, walking his celebrity clients down the red carpet (he works in high end PR)
