I actually think she sounds phenomenal when she sings in her lower register during this song.

She envisioned this song as a duet. She wanted Prince to do it, but he declined. She didn’t want anyone else so she decided to do it herself and sang the first part in a lower register, which would have been Prince’s part.

STOP LYING! She wanted to work with him and they started to work on In The Closet, but it fell apart when he didn’t like her lyrics and she kept pushing him to do things he didn’t want to do (change his image). She has said this herself in interviews.

Prince reconciled with Jam and Lewis, and they appeared in Graffit Bridge (the movie and soundtrack). Incidentally, Prince wanted Madonna in the film but she declined. A rare wise movie decision by her.

Yeah, Madonna wanted Michael to appear in drag in the video (along with her) and he apparently freaked. But when you look at Michael around that time, with the heavy makeup, long hair, and the elaborate blingy stagewear, you have to wonder why exactly would he think drag was a bridge too far.
