Why are eldergays so obsessed with it? Is it that good? Is there something about it that makes it especially appealing to gay men?
Only respond if you’ve actually seen it. I don’t want to hear about theories on me being a troll, EST, 0/10, etc.

It's a great show if you see a good production. Unfortunately, there's never truly been a perfect production except the original (according to those that were there). I think that production was the perfect storm. It was a very timely piece then and the majority of the audience got all the nods the creators threw in and all the references in "I'm Still Here." Seeing someone like Yvonne De Carlo singing that had an extra layer of poignancy because she was similar to the character she was playing in some way. Seeing Alexis Smith singing and dancing with the best of them and showing off a different side of herself was truly exciting and it was very much like the song "Lucy and Jessie." This classy ice princess we'd known for years was opening up and showing everything she had bottled up inside.
It was also still coming off of the success of such shows as Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Company that dismantled the traditional American marriage and gave us a glimpse of what it's like inside more dysfunctional marriages. That was still somewhat fresh and not done to death like it has been now. Gays love thinking that heterosexuals don't have their shit together and stories like this appeal to us.
Add to all of that a great score, the beautiful costumes and sets, and the universal theme of "the road you didn't take" and you've got yourself gay catnip.

Someone aptly noted that Follies freaks are kind of like heroin addicts continually searching for that high they got when they saw it. Anyone who did see it has to be in their late 60s at the youngest. The fact that it's been revived so many times unsuccessfully really tells you that it's just not that good a show.

Virginia Wolfe was ten years before...Company came after.

Company was '70 and Follies was '71

Thanks everyone. I’ll watch the video and see what I think. I was just curious because I see a bunch of threads on DL and skip them because I have no point of reference. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I’ll post again after watching.

For me, it's all about the music. I really think that, note for note, it;s Sondheim's best.
