I thought it wad accidentally synthesized during vaccine development at a lab in New Jersey.

Sort of an interesting article, I guess, but all he is doing is changing his original speculation. He first speculated that the first human who spread the disease among humans was someone from Cameroon who made their living hunting bush meat, now he says he thinks it was a WWI soldier stranded in Moloundou for a few months in 1916. The soldiers were forced to hunt for food, and that's all his hypothesis is based on. There's no actual evidence.

Wasn't there some story about a young black teen somewhere in the South who had been abused and raped? It was in the 1960s and the poor kid had developed some sort of immunodeficiency problem and none of the doctors could explain what his illness was. I'm sure I read about it here on the DL.

Except there's nowhere in that article that says it was dormant, just that its existence was isolated for a long time before colonialism, population growth and travel spread it beyond its original parameters.

I bet right now there are a handful of viruses and diseases in isolated areas that, if we continue to do what's being done with the Amazon rainforest and in previously isolated areas, will kill us all in a matter of years if they were to spread. We likely survived earlier plagues as much as we did through evolution and the fact that we were so geographically separated.

I thought there were people in NYC, mainly heroin users, who were dying in the 70’s? Some doctor, and I want to say it was a woman, was noticing a pattern before it became widespread and an epidemic with gay men.

I remember reading some time ago, that workers from the Dominican Republic and Haiti brought the disease to this part of the world from the Belgian Congo, where they were employed. It spread among drug users at first.

Granted, this was years ago, so there may have been changes in this theory.

It is very possible that IF that kid in St. Louis had AIDS, that it was different from the AIDS that later spread around the world. AIDS has various strains; there are some in Africa that had infected local populations but then died out because it had no where to spread.

How he got it is a bit more of a mystery. Who ever gave it to him should have also died of AIDS but there are not many other reports. Of course its very possible that a poor black man died in St. Louis and doctors didn’t care enough to do test or take notes.

The prevailing theory makes the most sense with what we know. African hunters ate bush meat and someone, be it through eating or an animal scratch, the virus made the jump to humans.

Haiti had sent diplomats and academics to the Congo for training. One or a few people there probably caught it and brought it to Haiti. That is why is was so wide spread in Haiti in the early years.

It then spread to the US via FL in drug uses. There are reports of heroine uses in the late 1970s dying of a strange flu. Then, it jumped to gay men who, while still in the fringes of society were more connected than heroine users.

There were local cases and cluster cases in Africa for many years that were not identified as AIDS. Remember, average life expectancy was low anyway and people back then in that region died from all kinds of infections.
