I think half of Marky Mark's demographic had to have been gay men. He isn't exactly non-threatening and romantic like most male artists who are targeted to girls tend to be. He knew this and even performed at gay clubs.

Nkotb is basically Jordan as the lead singer while the others as his backup dancers.

Jordan was the only one who could sing and he preferred to do a Delfonics/Stylistics type of falsetto. Joey could sing as well but his voice wasn't developed and he was just there to do the Ralph Tresvant/Michael Jackson Motown-inspired vocals.

Unlike Backstreet Boys, Take That, NSYNC, New Edition etc. NKOTB never seemed to be embraced by MTV or mainstream adult radio. They were branded "for kids only". I imagine had NKOTB had the same love that the other boy bands had then Jordan's (and Joey's) transition to solo artist would have been smoother. Maybe if they fired Maurice Starr earlier and went for a harder New Jack Swing sound that Bell Biv Devoe, Color Me Badd and Christoper Williams were doing they would have been more liked. A lot of NKOTB's songs were outdated even for the late 80s
