Is it true that Jeanne went berserk because one of her tricks unexpectedly made her cum? Why did she always wash her hands after waking up? And why couldn't they find a cuter actor to play her son?
DL cineasts, tell me about 202-minute-long arthouse classic JEANNE DIELMAN

I haven't seen this film in YEARS. I did purchase the Criterion Blu Ray but haven't got around to watching it yet.
Very little happens in the film though it is never dull. Easily Chantal Akerman's best film - it was pretty much all downhill after this one sadly.

I liked a lot. I did not think I would, but it almost plays out like a thriller.
New Yorkers here might also like 'News From Home', which I liked aswell, but might be boring to some.

Any place to watch it free?

I only heard of this as apparently one of the final scene to the quite excellent Mrs. America was an homage to it. Would be interested in seeing it too.

R3 It used to be on youtube. It could also be in the Criterion Channel.

Delphine Seyrig was a treasure. I saw this in a repertory movie house a few years back and someone who had brought their infant to the screening had to walk out when their baby started crying.

I liked watching it a lot, too, it wasn't boring. But in the end, I decided it was just lesbian propaganda.

It was a lot like 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman', housewife ennui and despair.

I took some film theory lasses with the cinematographer. She was typically French. Once I asked her if I can review my ideas with her. She didn't have her office hours listed and she said stop in anytime after noon. I said Monday or something. And she responded with such disdain and horror: "how can I possibly do that? I have swimming on Mondays."

[quote] Is it true that Jeanne went berserk because one of her tricks unexpectedly made her cum?
Yes, Akerman confirmed that in some interviews. She experienced orgasm with her client on the second day and you can see her routine starting to spiral into chaos immediately after leaving the bedroom with him.
[quote] Why did she always wash her hands after waking up?
Because of her OCD.
[quote] And why couldn't they find a cuter actor to play her son?
It's discussed in the film that his father was considered an ugly man so he probably took after him, not the fabulous Miss Seyrig.

TCM Sunday imports had this on a while back. I was asleep (began at 2am), but woke up and watched. I kept waiting for some kind of plot, but in a strange way...it was fascinating. I can't believe how long that movie is..for doing essentially nothing.

Recent episode of podcast, A Film and A Movie, discussing and comparing The Assistant (2020) with Julia Garner and Jeanne Dielman. The latter half is about Jeanne Dielman and though all the hosts have a clear admiration for it, they get quite funny about it. Worth a listen.

The "Jeanne Dielmann Cookbook" consists of 3 recipes: breaded veal cutlet; breaded chicken cutlet; and breaded pork cutlet.

Love how she turns the lights off every time she leaves a room.
Yes, I know that's a weird sentence, but I really do.
