I haven't seen her acting in anything recently.
She's such a lovely actress.

I don't know if you know it, or you think it's funny, or it's purely coincidence, Cicely Tyson died today at the age of 96.

Her book is pretty good. She dishes a lot, and has a surprisingly funny perspective on her roller coaster relationship, marriage, and divorce from Miles Davis. Her career had three distinct and interesting acts: pre-acting until she was 30, when she worked as a secretary and print model; learning to act and working on stage, TV, and screen in supporting roles until she achieved fame and acclaim with "Sounder", "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman", and "Roots"; and struggling to find good and appealing roles as she aged. Her best friend was the dancer Arthur Mitchell, and she helped him found the Dance Theatre of Harlem and later served on its board. Mitchell accompanied her to the Oscars when she was nominated for "Sounder" in 1973, and to the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015. In the 90s she became involved teaching kids at the school named after her, the Cicely L Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange. She had one daughter, who is 78 now, but her real name is not given in the book (although it's easy enough to find). All in all, it's a fascinating, one-of-a-kind story.
Too bad there wasn't a better editor to cut out some of the rambling (especially regarding her faith and sixth sense) and correct the many errors. Tyson ungallantly gripes about Liza Minnelli winning the Oscar for "Cabaret" as compensation because her parents were Hollywood royalty and "neither of them had ever earned an Oscar"; but Vincente Minnelli did win an Oscar for "Gigi" and Judy Garland was awarded a Juvenile Oscar in 1940. She says her friend Viola Davis won an Oscar for "The Help", but it was Octavia Spencer who won. Incidentally, Davis' introduction to the book is really quite something, with "everything but the bloodhounds snappin' at her rear end."

Those errors are pretty glaring. It makes the enterprise - did the publishing company even employ and editor? - seem rather bootleg.

She's among them.
