Yes I am sure with over 100,000 dead from covid and joblessness on the rise, the working people really care about representation right now.

Didn’t make the quota, eh?

I see neon hair. I can guess the tone and content.

[quote]BAME representation behind-the-scenes stood at 11.8% last year, down from 12.3% in 2019
Truly shocking fall of...0.5%

I think the only things actually produced in this country last year where gameshows and panel shows. Still if they want to lynch Alexander Armstrong and Jeremy Clarkson I won't complaint.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 28, 2021 11:20 AM |
Ludicrous story. The whole UK BAME population is about 13%, so representation hovering around that is fine, minor blips will always occur. Meanwhile in front of the camera they are usually overrepresented (which I'm not complaining about at all).

R6 It reminds me of this Guardian article in which women (who make up 85% of the publishing industry) were moaning about the publishing industry being 100% white and calling for more diversity.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 28, 2021 11:55 AM |
What is BAME?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 28, 2021 12:39 PM |
The acronym BAME stands for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and is defined as all ethnic groups except White ethnic groups.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 28, 2021 12:40 PM |
r8 Black, Asian and minority ethnic. Essentially British for the American PoC (person of Colour) grouping

Celebs Go Dating, currently on E4, is a sad case in point. Six single celebs had to pick twelve single non celebs to live with them in a mansion. The celebs didn't pick a single BAME person and only 1/6 celebs is Asian.

R11 You can't force people to find you attractive.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 28, 2021 12:57 PM |
This obsession with representation is beyond.
It’s anti-art and fomenting racism.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 28, 2021 12:59 PM |
Sounds on par with the population. Dont see what the issue is.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 28, 2021 1:06 PM |
The UK is 80% white once you step outside of London.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 28, 2021 1:07 PM |
R15 I thought it was higher than that?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 28, 2021 1:18 PM |
These people are the bame of the entertainment industry, always complaining.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 28, 2021 1:36 PM |
Same thing with gay characters. Hardly any gay (male) characters on tv shows. Tons of lesbians on tv though, as usual.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 28, 2021 2:37 PM |
We need more gay representation.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 28, 2021 2:52 PM |
I grew up in England and it is always odd to see an English TV show. Every other person/spouse/lawyer is black.
I'm glad they are getting jobs, but that is not what most of England is really like.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 28, 2021 3:11 PM |
They should subscribe to HBO MAX. It’s pretty much BET Premium in terms of representation. Whether the other 87% of the population wants to watch another dramedy about a black woman in her twenties is anyone’s guess. I’m guessing not though.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 28, 2021 3:32 PM |
R20 No, but it's what London is like and the media is seen through a London focused lens. Just look at the soaps, are there really that many black and Asian families in small villages in Yorkshire?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 28, 2021 3:35 PM |
London is incredibly diverse. And the series pictured, "I May Destroy You" is good- one episode really made you understand how people become Social Justice Warriors and get sucked into being influencers.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 28, 2021 3:50 PM |
Lemme guess, R23. Systemic racism?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 28, 2021 4:20 PM |
R21, even in London not every other person/spouse/lawyer is black.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 28, 2021 4:25 PM |
R21 But I really want another drama about a black woman dealing with society and the angry black woman stereotype. In fact I believe it should be shown to all white people, including the underclass and working class school aged lads who are completely privilege in their box bedrooms, with handed down clothes and falling into crime because the safety net has been torn away by austerity and 10 years of Tory government. Damn those lads and their white, male privilege. We should see less of that and more of the tough times of a black woman who was raised in a upper-middle class home by two black lawyers.

R27 Is your post sarcastic?
It sounds sarcastic.

All that tells me is that the UK was 87% white TWENTY YEARS AGO, r26.
Now the number has to be closer to 75%.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 28, 2021 8:39 PM |
It was 85% white in the 2011 census, R29, so it hadn't shifted that much. The next national census is coming up this year.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 28, 2021 9:06 PM |
R29 They are fornicating like rabbits.
