Mattress Recommendation?
I recently moved and am borrowing a plush mattress that is killing my back. I have low back problems and do better with something more on the firm side. I was looking at Consumer Reports and really like the Saatva, but it takes 3-4 weeks to get here and I don't want to wait that long as this mattress right now is killing me. Any recommendations? I don't really like the memory foam as it traps heat. If possible, I would like something more natural but don't want to spend too too much. I don't want a ton of off-gassing from a new mattress. Yes, I sound like a pain but I like to be comfortable in bed and not in pain.
If it helps, I am a side sleeper.

Then get a spring mattress. Or get a very expensive hi-tech futon with latex core and cotton and cocofibre.

The futon is out because I have a bed that would be too deep to accommodate. I don't know if I should just go to a Mattress place around me, I don't want some pushy salesman talking me into something and then I get home and it is terrible.

I only know this because I bought it today: Sealy PosturePedic Plus Opportune II Plush Mattress. It’s around $979 with free delivery and installation. I have no idea if it’s good but I don’t have time to shop in a mask or lay on dirty mattresses in a store. Firm.

This won't help you, OP, but I would never part with my Soma 7-tube waterbed. Looks like regular bed and takes ordinary fitted sheets. You can adjust the firmness by regulating the amount of water in the tubes. Every night I drift off on a cloud of happiness, gently rocked by the light wave motion.

2nding to get an air bed while you decide.
A soft bed is recommended for side sleepers though. Innerspring with a layer or two of latex would be optimal.

Reason I like SleepNumber beds: metal fatigue over time with coil spring mattresses and heat build up with foam mattresses.
Air cannot sag and heat is not a problem.
I like to buy things that last and last and free air will never be made obsolete.
Plus SleepNumber mattresses are adjustable firmness. What could be better?

They're really giving memory foam and latex mattresses the hard sell right now but what isn't mentioned much is how much heavier they are than traditional mattresses. A regular full can be about 150 lbs.

Air mattresses are not good for cold weather. The air in the mattress does not warm up. You'll feel the cold coming from below you, no matter how many blankets you have on top of you.

The most comfortable bed I've slept in was in Japan. And I recreated it after I moved from Japan. Anyway, it's regular foam (the folding kind) with a futon (no, not a couch) mattress on top. The futon is not the rigid type, it's the thick-quilt type that you can roll up.
You can put that on the floor or on a platform.

I'm not sure what to do now. I thought I would look some more and I think I'd like a latex bed the best, I was looking at Avocado but the one I like says 9 weeks out. Now I'm thinking I'll head to a Mattress Firm and see if they have anything, maybe I'll go with a box spring and call it a day. I bought a Saatva Classic Luxury Firm mattress and foundation in November and I absolutely love it. I too am a side sleeper, OP. Additionally, I occasionally have back pain so I devoted a lot of time doing my research. For the first time in my life, I bought a mattress online without ever having lain on one first. I was very wary of doing this, so a no questions asked, paid return policy was essential to me. Saatva gives you 6 months to decide!
Because I am pushing 60 and am alone in a second story apartment, I had no intention of dragging my old mattress and boxspring down the flight of stairs by myself. Also, I have no truck so I couldn’t junk them if I wanted to. So I thought that I’d be hiring a handyman and renting a truck, in addition to paying for the mattress. So it had to be delivery. Go to other mattress companies and read the fine print on their delivery terms. Due to COVID, every last one says they will deliver to the curb and no further. Saatva was the one exception. In addition to delivering and installing in my bedroom, they will cart away your existing mattress and box spring and haul it away! That checked all the boxes for me. I am really happy with my purchase.

For those of you with Saatva, is it more of a traditional mattress or is it a hybrid? I've been researching mattresses the last several days and see it on a lot of best of lists, but I'm not quite sure on the construction.
I have a Beautyrest hybrid (sadly not the black) and have loved it, but it's at the end of it's lifespan and need a new one asap. I'm a side sleeper with no heat issues, but my brain refuses to shut off until 1-3am, so am often in bed for several hours at night before falling asleep.

r40 The crappy mattress that I was borrowing was a Beautyrest and I hate it because I would sink into the awful memory foam and it messed up my back.
r41 I was in the My Green Mattress showroom and they had an Avocado. I laid on it and it was too firm for me, and I like firm. Otherwise fairly similar to the Natural Escape, although Avocado is more expensive and supposed to be better made. You would definitely need a topper and memory foam is THE DEVIL to me.

Another Sleep Number fan here. First one lasted for 14 years, prior to owning one I had nagging lower back pain. the customer service and warranty is excellent. Just replaced it with a new model. Besides the remote which can increase or decrease firmness and adjust pressure points as you sleep, this new mattress also has an app for your phone, which gives you a report each morning on the amount of restful sleep, quality of sleep etc. I don't really care about that. Reminds me of an old bf who gave me a report each morning: you were so restless last night, moved around too much, got up twice, etc. He had to go.
Friends have the high end kitchen sink version. Heats foot area, separate temp controls for each side of bed, can raise head or foot of bed, does everything but make the bed. They love it.

I would go with a Saatva if I had to do it all over again. I slept on my Natural Escape and it was a little too firm, I will buy a latex topper and hopefully that should solve it. But it got here quickly and they set it up for free because I am in the area. I tried out the Avocado and it was very nice but too firm-only if you are strictly a back or stomach sleeper.

[quote]Also for the Saatva folks, did you order the foundation they sell? I have a platform bed with slats am not sure what the difference is between it and their foundation. What height mattress did you order and thoughts on it?
I had a low profile foundation from Ethan Allen that I use with my Saatva mattress. The foundation is 5 inches, the mattress is 14.5 inches. My bed frame is 7 inches off the floor. I'm tall so the bed isn't too high for me.
Saatva answers the question: Can I put my Saatva Classic on a platform bed?
Yes, you can put your Saatva Classic on a platform bed, as long as it has a solid surface or horizontal slats spaced less than 4 inches apart. Queen and larger sizes also need proper center support.
Either the 11.5" or 14.5" height can be used with a platform. We recommend the 11.5" version if your platform has a low headboard, so that more of the headboard remains visible. But the decision is purely aesthetic; both mattresses have the same coil count and deliver the same level of comfort and quality. Need more help choosing a mattress height? asking for a mattress recommendation is silly. Go to stores. Try out the mattresses. Buy one you like. Make sure they have a 30 day return policy in case you buy one you end up not liking. And remember that some mattresses break in a bit (so remember what you'll end up with after a few months may be slightly less firm than when you try it that day).

Go to the website called The Mattress Underground. Read the Overview section.
Their recommendation: Buy your mattress from a small regional manufacturer with a showroom. The product will be what we used to think of as a good mattress, well-made, from higher quality components.
OTOH, If you go to a national retailer (like the Mattress Firm, Sleep Train, whatever), you have to accept that the retailer will be selling you some version of the “big S” manufacturer beds: Sealy, Simmons, Serta, etc, and you’re buying an inferior product, even at the high end, made from inferior components.
Here's a link. After the Overview section, you can choose the amount of detail you want to go into. There's also a good forum section, too.
Beats just wandering blind into a dirty mattress retailer and lying down on a bunch of different mattresses.

Recommend McRoskey a mattress. Made in SF for 140 years. When The Queen (of England) stayed in SF in 1985, she slept on one in a hotel and ordered a bunch to be sent back to one of her properties. Have had mine for 25 years. They last a lifetime. The only catch is that you have to rotate or flip the mattress every four months or so. Payed $3,500 for a California King for the mattress and a feather bed topping. Box spring not included, but I used my old one. The great-grandson (gay) sold me mine. The original showroom is near The Castro. Best money I ever spent.

Being stuck in the house for a year really does cause you to reevaluate your home furnishings. I had two beds, each at least twenty years old, that I realized were pretty much shot, and since I can sleep on just about anything, I decided to buy replacements online according to reviews rather than risking Covid by trying them out in a showroom. I'm really glad I did. I had no idea how bad my old beds were until I started noticing how easy it was to get comfortable on them and how certain aches and pains went away after a few nights in my new bed.
The beds I chose were two sets of full-sized firm 14 in. innerspring mattresses with foundations and metal frames. One was a Stearns and Foster Hurston, the other was a Saatva Classic. They cost about the same (both were on sale) and in terms of basic construction and feel, they're pretty much identical, with a bumpy quilted foam layer on top that looks a little weird if you're used to a bed with a flat surface, but that I don't notice when I'm lying on it. The Saatva mattress is a little lighter if you're one of those people like me who likes to switch it around so that it wears evenly (they're made to be slept on with the bumpy side up so you can't flip them over.) It's also the most handsome looking mattress I've ever seen, pure white with gold accents. The S&F is navy blue on the sides and white on top.
I have a friend who bought a Novaform bed in a box from Costco and absolutely swears by it, but says it's REALLY heavy.

When mattress manufactures blatantly decided to shorten the mattress buying interval by only making mattresses with one wear surface ("No flipping!" they crowed), was the moment I seriously considered a SleepNumber.
Conventional mattress prices are getting ridiculous, they don't last nearly as long as the once did, and foam alternatives tend to sleep uncomfortably hot.
Over time the metal in coil spring mattresses develops memory (aka, "sag") and the off-gassing, in addition to the retained heat and heavy weight of foam mattresses, are seen as a purchase mistake by many.
"Air Don't Sag" should be a SleepNumber slogan.
If you haven't tried one in a SleepNumber store, you owe it to yourself to add one to your consideration list.

I have IKEA's natural latex mattress and it provides the best night's sleep. The morning after the first night we had it, my ex and I both woke with no aches, pains, or back problems.
Latex mattresses are heavy. Getting it to the bedroom on the 3rd floor of our house required great effort. After that, the weight is a non-issue. If back pain is an issue, then you owe it to yourself to thoroughly investigate latex mattresses.

R24 the Japanese mattresses really are best, and so good for the spine as well as for your home and for the environment. Japan really is an incredible country, and they do so many everyday things in a more holistic healthy way than we do in the West.
I have a stationary futon/mattress hybrid (from the company at the link, who are excellent) that has converted me. My mattress is layered so it is firm but not hard, mouldy subtly to my body shape, and supports/stretches my skeleton without too much give. Best of all, it’s all natural materials which don’t set of my allergies and don’t off-gas toxic chemicals like normal mattresses. This has changed my life for the better, and I will never go back to regular spring or latex or foam mattresses.
The only thing is, you’ve got to remember to flip a futon/mattress hybrid monthly (so it doesn’t lump up), and air it out in the sun a few times yearly (during a dry summer spell works well).

Do any mattress/furniture stores sell Saatva? I'd hate to buy something like this online w/o seeing/trying it first.
