“Beefcake” (1998) Docudrama on Bob Mizer & the muscle men’s magazines from the 1940s-1960s
This film looks at the 1950's muscle men's magazines and the representative industry that were popular supposedly as health and fitness magazines, but were in reality primarily being purchased by the still underground homosexual community. Chief among the purveyors of this literature was Bob Mizer, who maintained a magazine and developed sexually inexplicit men's films for over 40 years. Aided by his mother, the two maintained a stable of not so innocent studs. At the end, the film moves into a court room drama as Mizer is tried for running a male-prostitute ring in the early 60's. Clips of Mizer's actual films starring individuals, such as Jack LaLanne and Joe Dallesandro, are included.
It also has actors recreate some stuff that took place in the past.
It’s very interesting and sad that taking nude photos was seen as a worse crime than murder etc. back then.
Give it a watch.

r1 they really weren't. The style was just different and the uglies weren't worth the cost of expensive film reels and pictures. Check out youtube videos of average people walking around in major cities from the 1940s-1960s. They look just as plain as people today with the exception of gangly teeth.

I love seeing those rare footage filmed back in the 50s and love how they combine the actors in with that footage in some scenes during their recreations etc.
It’s a fun one. Lots of gorgeous MEN from back then. Pure beefcake

R3 no. They were. The men back then were MEN. Something hard to find these days.

I just rewatched this after not seeing it for years.
I liked how well put together it was and the fact that they didn't shy away from nudity. You can't really tell this story properly without showing it.
R5, those men are still out there. You just won't necessarily see them on the screen, in magazines or of course Youtube.

r1 Men of the past bodybuilt for lean muscle and aesthetics rather than bulk. Their diet was mainly different too. Just look at the stark contrast between these guys and your average amateur IG muscle bro.

R5, It was a nation in the grips of militarization as well as food rationing.

That is true r8 like r7 claimed as well. Those men built themselves with what they got by day to day. Today's bodybuilder has an abundance of food, supplements, PEDs, and refined science literature to build themselves bigger and into a different form.

It’s not just about the form, it’s about the men. The way they carried themselves etc. men today act as feminine as Women.
I like MEN.

TikTok is FULL of gorgeous masculine, feminine, and everything in between. I'm just using that site as a reference. r1 needs to get out more. We have more people on this planet and in this country right now than in 1960. Thus the number of hotties has only increased. Wake up and get with reality.

No one is saying there aren’t hot young men these days, many are, but the men back then, even while young, acted like men. That’s hot. Masculinity is hot.
Some of you like fem boys, good for you, but I like my men like MEN. I am turned off by feminine men, no matter how handsome you are.

Joe Dallesandro was one of the most stunning specimens ever put on this earth. I've never seen a hotter ass than Joe's.

Joe was a whore since very young and made a good career out of it.
He was a good whore too, who did anything for money. He is straight but he sucked a mean cock if you were gonna pay him, or more. And he didn’t hide it, he was open with his whore ways.
His films with Andy Warhol are raw and real, and gratuitous.

How old are you? Time didn't change gay men's masculinity. Camp gays have always existed. A-List hunk Rock Hudson was quite femme in private (emphasis on private). To me, it seems like you are judging the book by its (Beefcake) cover trying to make past gays more masculine than they really were. Femme gays can act butch, but they in modern times they have the courage to be their true femme selves. And that includes so called muscle queens with Prada purses falling out of their mouths whenever they speak.

Loads of people seem to do this--view the past based on popular media. Especially people who weren't there at the time. I can only imagine the kind of shit people will think about THIS decade. But then again, social media has changed everything, so I don't know.

I can't help but find the notion of nostalgia of that time a bit sad when it comes to the Gay Community. All the sneaking around, hiding in the closet, the shame, the self loathing making you worship the so-called masculine ideal, craving the approval of masculine who let you suck their cock in exchange for money. I mean, the present is far from perfect, but people do have better options and opportunities to be openly gay and live happy and productive lives.

For those of us who grew up in the plague, the roided muscles and water weight of beefcake signaled a healthy, negative HIV status.
The masculinity bullshit was a concern only because I wanted to drag them into my closeted life. Once you drop the Noble Savage bullshit you have a buff hillbilly who really likes those hippy lace up shirts and you defend his happiness and hope he fucks around behind your back because he is stupid.

Many of them became bitter and angry when they got a little older and wiser and felt they were taken advantage of and exploited by him. They truly believed they were doing the normal “muscle” magazine shit, until later when they realized no, they weren’t.
He was an LA native, he would find teens or early 20s who were just moving there to break into the industry and recruit them for his “modeling gigs”.

I’m sure they forced you to take a Cock on camera, Joe (which was done right before his time doing this)
