Until he got sick, he kept doing his show. Interviewing people. I feel unaccountably sad. I think he and Betty White a re the two that, even though we expect it, I will feel sad. There is no one like him. He was a classic.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 23, 2021 12:20 PM |
He was still alive? I thought posting still-alive Larry King threads was a Datalounge cliche, like earrings, caftans or vicious slapping and that he had actually died some time ago.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 23, 2021 12:22 PM |
I knew Donald Trump was a rotten piece of filth many years ago when Larry King interviewed him and Trump just out of the blue said "has anyone told you that your breath is horrible" right in the middle of the interview. He did it to take King down a notch or two.

I loved Larry king. I discovered him when I was in college decades ago and I pulled all-nighters writing papers. It became a habit, but Larry's all night radio show kept me company. Always a bit eccentric, Larry enjoyed his guests 100%, and was generous with them. Larry had a nice voice. R.I.P.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 23, 2021 12:27 PM |
Itâs a miracle he made it this long between his health problems and women. RIP I used to enjoy his nightly show especially during the OJ trial, since I worked days I missed the trial coverage so would catch up on Larryâs show.

R21 is right that there was no other interviewer like Larry King. We make fun of him on DL now because of his forgetfulness in later years, but for a long time he had a great show on CNN. He would interview all the old timers from Hollywood and his knowledge of them went way back.

R55, as mentioned above, Larry interviewed thousands of people over many decades. He was great at asking questions and was especially good at doing shows with the old legends of Hollywood. He had a knowledge base that stretched back much farther than the average entertainment reporter today could dream of.

R60 - his own knowledge or his prep team's knowledge? There's been plenty of instances where he flubbed up questions and got things wrong, so a case could be made that it wasn't his OWN knowledge at all.
Hell, some of the queens on DL have more knowledge about old stars in one pinky than Larry King.
I just found his Walter Winchell get up and mannerisms to be corny and forced. He's like Lawrence Welk to me - obviously he was loved, but I don't understand why. Clearly, I wasn't his demographic.

R31 I had a similar experience while in college. For all the "young ones" Larry had a unique style and radio format. He would interview guests for the first hour and then the second and third hours were open to calls from listeners. Can you imagine many of today's stars or politicians being interviewed and questioned for three hours? His fourth hour was open phone American. We all learned that Larry was a liberal at heart but treated everyone, including the wackos with respect. Seldom did he get upset except in dealing with issues related to the Holocaust. He would tell stories, often repeated, and had a quirky sense of humor. He always ended the show with a plug for Duke's in DC.
He was one of the best radio talk show host, but unfortunately, many will only recall his recent years on TV.

Memorable interviews (Larry King):
Prince: Surprisingly good interview.
Mariah Carey: LK asked her whether she & JLo would ever sing together. MC said: "I don't know what that would sound like."
Jerry Seinfeld: LK asked Jerry whether "Seinfeld" (TV show) was cancelled or whether Jerry decided to quit. Jerry had a hissy fit ("Do you know who I am?" type of thing).
I'm surprised he and his final wife, Shawn, were still legally married when he died.

The post-mortem situation is going to be messy. He was estranged from his last wife but still married to her, however his remaining kids - including his sons with Shawn - all dislike her and have basically accused her of gold-digging. I think there was legal action involved last year, done to protect LK or get his financial affairs in order in case he died.

I forgot about those columns; I remember reading them as a kid, marveling that someone actually paid him for that mess. I saw Larry walking down the street in DC. His head was enormous.
He was good at drawing otherwise reticent people and of course, yukking it up with old show biz types, but he also let other people sit there & spout their lies & nonsense without challenging them.

Here's Larry asking Jerry Seinfeld whether "Seinfeld" got cancelled. Jerry has no sense of humor about himself. Geez.

[quote]Wasnt he just released a few days ago from the hospital supposedly recovering from covid? Or was he really a terminal case and he or his family requested him to die at home?
He was released from the ICU a week or two ago but was still in the hospital.

He more of a celebrity ass kisser than an interviewer. As mentioned above, he'd let his guest spout whatever bullshit they wanted and not call them out on it.
I gave up on him decades ago, after he'd had Britt Ekland promoting her autobio "True Britt". A caller asked her if it wasn't true that her real career was being a professional girlfriend. King cut him off and defended Britt.

That caller wishes they had The Wicker Man and AbFab on their resume.

CNN has a remembrance special on Larry coming up at 9 PM tonight.

In a way, his lack of preparation and asinine questions was what made him a successful interviewer. His softball, unexpected questions would throw even the most practiced celebrity off their game. Youâd end up with something much less polished but much more real.

Frrm R157. "I gave up on him decades ago, after he'd had Britt Ekland promoting her autobio "True Britt". A caller asked her if it wasn't true that her real career was being a professional girlfriend. King cut him off and defended Britt. "
Okay, confess. We know this had to be one of our resident Eldergays calling in.

A favorite moment of mind. He interviewed a middle-aged New Jersey woman, a woman of Italian descent, with suspiciously black hair, whose brother had been murdered by his daughter, her niece. The daughter/niece defended herself, arguing her father had sexually abused her. Larry asked his guest if she was surprised by these allegations. âSurprised?!,â she replied, âI was duh-vass-ah-tate-ed!!â
