He's the only anchor to have helmed all three of NBC News' flagship programs: "TODAY," "Nightly News" and "Meet the Press."
Tom Brokaw announces retirement after 55 years at NBC News
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 24, 2021 7:33 AM |
Thank God
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 22, 2021 8:26 PM |
Um, what?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 22, 2021 8:26 PM |
I thought he died several years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 22, 2021 8:27 PM |
I thought he was already retired.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 22, 2021 8:28 PM |
Yes, I through he retired more than a decade ago when he stepped down from Nightly News and Brian Williams took over.
Since then, they would cart him out occasionally to promote a book he's written or to talk about some historic event he covered, which is what you would expect of someone retired.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 22, 2021 8:31 PM |
Exactly r4. Do they just trot him out once in a while?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 22, 2021 8:32 PM |
But Peter Jennings is still at it, right?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 22, 2021 8:33 PM |
I'm a real old-timer but I used to watch him when he was the anchor on KNBC in LA. He was sort of the #2 anchor behind Tom Snyder. Even though he was a solid journalist, he wasn't adverse to hosting Sunday entertainment programs and he was very good. He always had a very boyish look coupled with an excellent voice. Unlike Snyder, he was never smarmy or overly familiar. Very professional.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 22, 2021 8:36 PM |
Why do all these old people hang on until they're almost dead? Brokaw, Nancy Pelosi, Bitch McConnell. What is it that they can't retire at a decent age?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 22, 2021 8:42 PM |
Do you mean “Drunk Tom Brokaw”?
That’s how I know him.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 22, 2021 8:42 PM |
Well Dan Rather would probably still be anchoring right now if not for CBS making him take the fall for their mistake.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 22, 2021 8:59 PM |
[quote] But Peter Jennings is still at it, right?
Sure is.
Just not here.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 22, 2021 9:15 PM |
[quote] he wasn't adverse to hosting Sunday entertainment programs
Oh, dear!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 22, 2021 9:15 PM |
He morphed into George Burns.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 22, 2021 9:17 PM |
Why does he always sound like he’s got marbles in his mouth ? Are his dentures slipping
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 22, 2021 9:19 PM |
You'll still be able to watch him on his OnlyFans channel.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 22, 2021 9:21 PM |
Peter Jennings has been on assignment in another realm since 2005, R7.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 22, 2021 9:26 PM |
Good, get that nasty conservative cunt off the air.
Wait....we were talking about Chuck Todd, right??
Seriously, Brokaw is an asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 22, 2021 9:26 PM |
NBC News, now do Chuck Todd.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 22, 2021 9:27 PM |
Breaking news: Brokaw is either drunk on air and/or has marbles in his mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 22, 2021 9:29 PM |
How odd , I thought he retired several years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 23, 2021 12:34 AM |
Some of us have farewell tours regularly, R22.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 23, 2021 12:42 AM |
I thought he died several years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 23, 2021 12:48 AM |
They keep these guys on and give them an office and a salary way past their “time”.
NBC News hasn’t been the same in 10 years. They are too corporate. Now owned by Comcast.
The days of a powerhouse network with shows like NBC news live from NY (and sometimes Los Angeles) and Dateline are long gone.
They were the best. Followed by ABC news and then CBS taking up the rear, only because they always seemed to stay stuck a generation behind the other two.
Ironically, ABC News is now worthless, led only slightly by a hollowed our NBC News.
CBS News is now the dominant network news force, in terms of ratings, but also in terms of breadth and depth.
Although it too is owned by a massive corporation, of the three, I think that CBS has kept the most of its original DNA.

[quote]then CBS taking up the rear
Excuse me! Credit where credit is due!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 23, 2021 1:03 AM |
For international news, I rely on the BBC..PBS News Hour is very solid.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 23, 2021 1:04 AM |
PBS Newshour is excellent. And it doesn’t have all the noisy sound effects.
They deserve the Pulitzer for Covid coverage. Outstanding.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 23, 2021 1:05 AM |
Public radio has also stepped up in the last 18 months or so. They have ramped up local coverage in places where all the newspapers have been whacked and/or co-opted.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 23, 2021 1:08 AM |
[quote] I thought he died several years ago.
He did, but his contract was so solid it’s only now they were able to get him out.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 23, 2021 1:08 AM |
[quote]Since then, they would cart him out occasionally to promote a book he's written or to talk about some historic event he covered, which is what you would expect of someone retired
Yeah, I remeber the Today Show would constantly any book he had written.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 23, 2021 1:26 AM |
Let him go.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 23, 2021 1:35 AM |
R18 How do you know he is a conservative and an asshole. I happen to personally know Tom and he is neither. So if Tom is not an asshold, and I am not an asshole, we know who is an asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 23, 2021 1:47 AM |
Isn't Brokaw a GAY BOY?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 23, 2021 1:52 AM |
Brokaw is a Democrat, and the Democratic Party tried a number of times to get him to run for office in Montana, where he owns a billion acre ranch near David Letterman, yada yada.
Famously well-hung.
Had cancer a few years ago, so this worries me.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 23, 2021 1:56 AM |
I'm glad he did well with the multiple myeloma, R35. And as you say, I hope that isn't playing a part in his decision, health-wise.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 23, 2021 4:22 AM |
My uncle was in the same frat as Tom Brokaw at the University of South Dakota, and has stayed in touch with him and his wife over the years. Brokaw is a solidly liberal guy.
r18 is just pulling out the idea that Brokaw is a conservative completely out of his ass.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 23, 2021 4:31 AM |
I always confuse him with the other old newscaster that has the show on the RadioAndy Sirius channel.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 23, 2021 4:33 AM |
The fact that we don’t know his political leanings proves his professionalism. It’s smart, because people now base every thing on the thin edge of politics.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 23, 2021 6:10 AM |
He was accused!!!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 23, 2021 7:42 AM |
Can we please get rid of Andrea Mitchell? She is unwatchable!!! She has to go now! She can take Chuck Todd with her as she's going out the door....
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 23, 2021 10:19 AM |
[quote] He's the only anchor to have helmed all three of NBC News' flagship programs: "TODAY," "Nightly News" and "Meet the Press."
One day a withered old Chuck Todd will bear a similar headline, inexplicably being the most-promoted persona at NBC News.
Meanwhile, over at ABC, an octogenarian Meghan McCain will be screaming under an onion cap of yellow hair through yellow teeth about her father and the goddamned liberals' abuses to her by supporting Medicare and social security.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 23, 2021 10:31 AM |
When I was a kid, I was good friends with one of his daughters at summer camp. I had no idea who her dad was, but was told later. Paul Newman also used to race nearby. The town went to ruin by its own hand, and is now Deplorable Central.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 23, 2021 10:52 AM |
Were Brokaw, Jennings and Rather all straight?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 23, 2021 11:01 AM |
[quote] CBS News is now the dominant network news force, in terms of ratings
In what universe?
CBS News is dead last in ratings, and has been for many years. CBS hasn't been the dominant network news force since the days of Walter Cronkite.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 23, 2021 11:10 AM |
[quote]Why do all these old people hang on until they're almost dead? Brokaw, Nancy Pelosi, Bitch McConnell. What is it that they can't retire at a decent age?
80 is the new 60 Dear, do catch up.
Besides, when you got a lot of money like they do, it's all you have to live for is a job where people look up or respect you. Even if people hate you, it's better than being invisible, alone, forgotten and crapping your pants counting the day until you die.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 23, 2021 12:38 PM |
[quote]Can we please get rid of Andrea Mitchell? She is unwatchable!!! She has to go now!
Don't hold your breath, have you seen her husband Alen Greenspan? He's 94!
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 23, 2021 12:42 PM |
When he went to the boss to say he was retiring, how the fuck did they understand him? "Rawr rawr rawr rawr! Rawr rawr rawr! Rawr!"
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 23, 2021 1:28 PM |
"Famously well-hung"
Ha ha ha ha, typical DL
"Can we please get rid of Andrea Mitchell? She is unwatchable!!!"
Dear, if they get rid of Andrea Mitchell, she'll be replaced with one of those plastic surgery dimwits like Yasmin Vossoughian.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 23, 2021 1:54 PM |
Some TV newspersons become Anchors Emeritus, as it were.
Please God, not Andrea Mitchell.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | January 23, 2021 3:13 PM |
R49, If Yasmin is fond of plastic surgery, then that tip of her nose has got to go before it gets to William Cambridge droop.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | January 23, 2021 3:16 PM |
We can only hope and pray that this turns a light bulb on in Wolf Blitzer's head.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 23, 2021 3:36 PM |
Quitter! Guess he doesn't have what it takes for the long haul.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 23, 2021 5:14 PM |
Not impressed.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 24, 2021 1:31 AM |
He's 80. It's good to work past 65 if you can and want to, but it also good to finally retire at some point. You do not want to be reporting news at 90.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 24, 2021 2:01 AM |
When is that smarmy cow Betty White going to retire?
