I was outed at work. I’d been with the company for several years and kept my private life private. A co worker was accused of Using homophobic slurs in conversation and I was called into HR and asked if I had ever heard him using said slurs and if I was offended. Since they assumed I was gay I guess they outed me.

A former classmate was outed when his mother found him masturbating to gay porn. He had been in deep denial but kept "slipping up."

It did not go well. He was a Jehovah's Witness, and his family was devout. His whole world was wrapped around their congregation. First they shamed him (which he had already done to himself), and then they cut him off from his family and church community, just to be safe.

He became suicidal. The last I knew, he was trying to get back into their good graces after attending gay conversion therapy. I hope he was able to break away for good and create his own family.

This was roughly 20 years ago. For many it's not as difficult these days, but I always fear for those with deeply twisted religious families or communities.

My sister outed me to my father when I was depressed in my early 20s (about five years ago). She decided to cut the Gordian knot on my behalf, rather than leaving it to me, as it would just have been another issue for me to think about at that time. I'm glad she did it.

Many years ago by a former boss of all people. She was a militant lesbian who thought everyone should tell everyone who they are. I chose to keep my private business at work just that, if they asked I would have answered but it was not her place to do so.

Weird story: Back in the 1990s I was doing freelance crime reporting for a major magazine and did a piece on a very nasty insurance company that was run like a cult. The cult leader/insurance CEO was a piece of work, a truly evil man. After my piece,, which exposed him, ran, he went on TV and announced that the author of the piece was (I kid you not) "A known homosexual."

Actually, at the time I wasn't so known, and in fact, only a few people knew. How he discovered my sexuality I don't know although given his resources he probably hired a detective. Regardless, as I was hardly a major public figure no-one cared and I actually found it rather flattering that he took me so seriously. And it was a great impetus to finally tell everyone. Which I did.

The insurance company eventually got sold and the evil man made several hundred million dollars and I'm still a free lance writer.
