Conservatives constantly complain about social media "cancelling"

[bold]BUT;[/bold]

The first time I really remember a "cancelling" was the Dixie Chicks.

They were cancelled by right wing Bush supporters because at one of their concerts they told the audience the band did not support the imminent Allied invasion of Iraq and were "ashamed" that President George W. Bush was from Texas. They never really recovered from it.

Remember that?

by Anonymousreply 72February 13, 2021 3:31 PM

A lot of us remember I'd say. They were very brave to do that because it does mean losing $$$.

Putting principles before $$$ is very admirable.

by Anonymousreply 1January 22, 2021 12:12 PM

Essentially it destroyed their careers. They even had to rename their band.

by Anonymousreply 2January 22, 2021 12:14 PM

They canceled MLK and Malcolm X and Bobby Kennedy and Fred Hampton too.

by Anonymousreply 3January 22, 2021 12:17 PM

They renamed the band because of the Dixie part, not the Bush controversy.

by Anonymousreply 4January 22, 2021 12:17 PM

True, OP

by Anonymousreply 5January 22, 2021 12:18 PM

R2 I never knew that. I was never a Dixie Chicks 'fan' but that was because their music simply didn't appeal to me.

As people they are fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 6January 22, 2021 12:18 PM

Republicans are experts on transference. Everything they accuse Liberals of doing or fear Liberals will do they have either done or is doing.

by Anonymousreply 7January 22, 2021 12:21 PM

So true, OP. We were fighting Al Qaeda because they had attacked "our way of life" and "what America stood for." Yet, what do we do to the Dixie Chicks -- punish them for exercising their right of free speech and the right to express opposition in a democratic society.

This is the danger of patriotism -- how easily it can slide into xenophobia and nationalism.

I do not like the chant "USA...USA...USA." It chills me. Echoes of "Sieg...Heil...Sieg...Heil!'

by Anonymousreply 8January 22, 2021 12:21 PM

Spot on R7.

The latest horseshit is [bold]BUT UNITY! UNITY! UNITY![/bold].

After they have spent decades destroying unity with divisive wedge politics which have resulted in the 2021 insurrection. It's just fucking unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 9January 22, 2021 12:24 PM

They cancelled french fries too!

The conservatives were the original book burners, career cancellers and petition signers. As was always said about Trump, everything he accuses you of doing, he is already doing himself.

However, We shouldn't take inspiration from them. I'm very uncomfortable about the Left starting to ban books and cancel movies. The owner of my favorite Palm Springs Hotel was outed online as a Trump supporter. Her personal FB had lots of flag emojis and BS about Trump being a friend of small business. However, her hotel was known for being gay friendly, she was never anything but welcoming to me and when some gay friends wanted to dox her, flood Tripadvisor and Yelp with 1 star reviews called her a Trump supporter and alleging unconfirmed homophobia I said a huge NO. I don't agree with her politics but I am not destroying someone's business and livelihood over that It's a horrible precedent, it's adding the accusation of thought crime to a business with a pride flag outside and it's giving them justification for doing the same to atheist owned businesses and gay owned businesses. That's no way to live.

And yes 'USA USA USA' gives me the creeps too. So does the word 'freedom'.

by Anonymousreply 10January 22, 2021 12:29 PM

Whoopi Goldberg was canceled for the same reason.

by Anonymousreply 11January 22, 2021 12:37 PM

It did inspire this, one of the best vindications I can imagine. Taking those words “shut up and sing, or my life would be over.” and exposing them for the violence and hypocrisy that they are is an amazing retort. And the crescendo that follows never fails to make me emotional, heartbreaking, but triumph. But you also get the sense that it almost broke them, the song and video are brilliant and definitely mark an apex in their career.

Here are some other obvious Republican bullshit talking points:

1. It's the party of law and order. I think January 6th, 2021 shot that point out of the water. The President plotting to kill the Vice-President and the Speaker of the House. That's law and order?

2. It's the party that values the sanctity of life. Really? After letting 400K people die? And even after there was a vaccine, not developing any plan to distribute this vaccine.

3. It's the party freedom and patriotism? Again, really? The party that went along with the idea of overthrowing fair elections and installing a dictator for life is all about freedom?

by Anonymousreply 13January 22, 2021 12:44 PM

Bill O’Reilly was big on boycotting every little thing having to do with post-9/11 sentiment. I remember there being something about not driving Mercedes-Benz or BMWs because they were German and, at that point, Gerhardt Schroeder wasn’t behind the US %150 and therefore hated America.

Toby Keith was also big with speaking out against the Dixie Chicks during all this and his words really ignited the hate towards them. He was so pro America and pro troops, but I bet if the draft came back he’d be the first at the Canadian border.

by Anonymousreply 14January 22, 2021 12:49 PM

I watch the David Pakman show on Youtube and he often plays the calls he gets. They hilarious thing is they come up in a tone of voice full of rage and they go 'You say Trump supporters are all angry racists and dumb well fuck you you little Argentinian piece of shit, fuck home asshole, you're a stupid beta cuck'......I mean there's nothing to say in response. They make your point for you and they can't see it. I assume they are the parents who yank a child's arm when he says a swear word and say 'you little shit don't you ever fucking say fuck ever again'

by Anonymousreply 15January 22, 2021 12:51 PM

[quote] they told the audience the band did not support the imminent Allied invasion of Iraq

Bush is now a considered a saint on Datalounge, so they must be Trump supporters.

OP, I don’t know how old you are, but before that incident in 1992 was another musical artist one when Sinead O’Connor protesting the Catholic Church and Pope’s deliberate subterfuge of the priest’s molesting of children. It was swift and brutal and nearly destroyed her career and took an untold toll on her psyche and mental health, yet she was absolute right and one of the first people to bravely call them out on an international level.

Two earlier people who were also canceled were Muhammad Ali and Jane Fonda for their stance on the Vietnam War.

***BREAKING NEWS*** Republican snowflakes can dish it out but can't take it!

by Anonymousreply 18January 22, 2021 1:06 PM

Right-wingers = hypocrites and projectionists

by Anonymousreply 19January 22, 2021 1:08 PM

Let’s not forget about the so-called “commies” who were blacklisted during the red-scare. The Republican Party has been “cancelling” for sport going on 70 years.

by Anonymousreply 20January 22, 2021 1:14 PM

Republicans were calling for the death of Britney Spears for fucks sake.

by Anonymousreply 21January 22, 2021 1:15 PM

Highly recommend the documentary "Shut Up and Sing" to get an understanding of how bad the Chicks had it. Still buy everything they put out in support. Love em.

by Anonymousreply 22January 22, 2021 1:25 PM

Yeah, I notice this all over the place where I live.

Republicans can be very angry people. They can immediately make false judgements about liberals, calling them Antifa and baby killers. What they don't seem to realize is that there are liberals who have never been a part of an extremist, bullshit group like Antifa, nor have we killed any babies. All but one woman whom I've known who's had an abortion, have been all highly conservative Republicans, who got pregnant "accidentaly" by cheating on their husbands or having premarital sex as teens or adults. All regular church goers. In fact, a few even had abortions behind their husband's backs, because they dif not want another kid.

Almost all of these Republican religious types drank or did blow, and several of the men were either arrested for rape or just accused of it. MANY cheated on their wives. All the while, practicing hate speech towards the LGBT communities, struggling alocholics and:or addicts who were honest about their struggles, and deeply and unabashedly condemned those struggling with depression, those who were suicidal, and the unmaaried, young women who chose to keep their children instead of aborting.

These types cam, and in my experience, tend to be profoundly judgemental, unforgiving, and love to shame others, gossip about others' misfortunes and mental illnesses, their humanity, while exhibiting faux compassion.

So many of is, conservatives and liberals, have lifelong struggles with depression and other forms of mental illness, yet we do not participate in hurting others or abusing our children or harming innocents and the weakest, and defenseless amongst us.

I will never understand the hateful reproach I've seen exhibited time and time again from conservatives, especially the Evamgelical types.

You cannot make mistakes or be human (human with no malice or ill will or intent towards others) around these people. You cannot even stand up for democracy and the gospel truyhs around them anymore. They will always inevitably, verbally abuse in order to humiliate, or bend you to thekr will, the second you make a mistake or struggle with depression or any notmal life problem, or verbalize any integrity towards what's morally/ethically correct, the second you do.

I've attempted to befriend these types, and while I have met some really good folks who are Republicans, sadly, I've met even more who just are not safe to be authentic or genuine around. Unless you are perfect or militant in some sort of extreme belief and/or behavior that they, themselves, subscribe to, they will find you lacking and eventually abuse you emotionally or cancel you, as a result.

They're all about controlling others, more so than loving others, and they find thosr two things to be synonymous, rather than disticnt from the other.

by Anonymousreply 23January 22, 2021 1:37 PM

They love to hate and condemn, while forgetting to forgive and love...

Why?

What's the point? If you hate and fear everyone, than obviously, Jesus has failed you, or what?

I'm not that sure it destroyed their careers (it caused them a lot of headache anyway), their following album was a success, got song of the year at the grammys even without the support of country radio.

Not ready to make nice is a fantastic song and even got airplay in my country where country music is not played at all

by Anonymousreply 28January 22, 2021 2:12 PM

R18, I would amend your statement to say snowflake Right Wingers can dish it out but don't believe they should have to take it.

When right wingers bitch about the first amendment and say things like "You're not allowed to say" what they really mean is "I can say whatever I like and no one can call me on it or contradict me."

by Anonymousreply 29January 22, 2021 3:14 PM

Human beings by nature are hypocritical. We can try to will ourselves not to be or revel in it. But it's a part of us, nonetheless.

by Anonymousreply 30January 22, 2021 3:39 PM

Basically, right-wingers believe that they're the only true Americans and they're the only ones entitled to the rights of American citizens. They believe that anyone else is here at their sufferance and should shut the fuck up and be grateful.

by Anonymousreply 31January 22, 2021 4:14 PM

In 1968, Eartha Kitt, then at the height of her powers, was invited to a luncheon with Lady Bird Johnson. When she expressed her views on the Vietnam "War" it so upset Lady Bird that her husband, LBJ, had Eartha blacklisted in the US. Unable to find any work at home, Eartha was forced to spend the next 10 years working in Europe. Cancelling is nothing new.

by Anonymousreply 32January 22, 2021 4:26 PM

Didn't gringos essentially cancel Native American culture. Basically wiping off the planet

by Anonymousreply 33January 22, 2021 4:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 54January 25, 2021 7:04 AM

Boris is pissing his panties across three, redundant threads about Gina Carano today.

Despite never having a counterargument, Boris has plastered his three billionth thread trying to reduce Trump's violent attacks on innocent people, crimes, the overthrow of the U.S. government and brainwashing his trash followers to "just a difference of opinion."

These are real, physical attacks against innocent people Shitler and his white trash army of suckers want to legalize. They want more Americans dead of COVID-19, as well.

Boris thinks he can just ignore the facts and they'll go away. In reality, voters are just going to keep ignoring Republican candidates.

It's not an "opinion" that Donald Trump's trade wars cost the U.S. economy 1,800 U.S. factories BEFORE the pandemic. It's not an "opinion" that Trump cut taxes for corporations manufacturing overseas. It's not an "opinion" that Trump lost more U.S. jobs than any president in history, a staggering 4 million NET LOSS of U.S. jobs from 2017 - 2020, including 300,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs lost as a direct result of his failed trade war with China BEFORE THE PANDEMIC. These are all FACTS.

It's not an "opinion" that Donald Trump's neglect enabled the coronavirus to kill 470,000 Americans. It's not an "opinion" that Donald Trump has taken million$ from the Russian mafia, including his campaign money, after decades of criminal rackets and promoting Russian political propaganda since the 1970s. It's not an "opinion" that Trump's business partners routinely kill anyone who challenges them in Russia, or lock them up and steal all their property as Putin is doing this minute. It's not an "opinion" that Trump approved of Russia paying bounties to Taliban terrorists to KILL U.S. TROOPS in Afghanistan. It's not an opinion that Trump ordered the U.S. Postal Service to dismantle mailboxes and sorting machines to suppress the mail-in vote. These are all FACTS. Harmful, innocent people-killing, economy-destroying. democracy-crushing FACTS.

So don't let these redneck liars try to reduce all these atrocities to just "a difference of opinion" or "controversy." It's violent treason and persecution. They're evil, fucking liars obeying a psychopath unconditionally.

The false Holocaust analogy isn't even the worst of what ALL Republican voters have done for the last 5 years. Carano thinks she can publish libel and slander online freely, which is ignorant of her and all her cheerleaders falsely equating it with "free speech."

Carano got off easily —‚ she should be locked in a cage and permanently separated from her parents, like she did to those Mexican toddlers. But with a hefty fine for publishing libel.

I'm not a conservative and I despise cancel culture. Also Democrates acting like Communist Marxists don't look good at all and not only in the US. Just because the political opponent right wing acts like an asshole means that the complete dictatorial behaviour of the left wing that no longer shines with its intelligence should be excused. On the contrary, it shows that the political line and the values of the left have a very big problem.

by Anonymousreply 56February 13, 2021 7:32 AM

R60 = Zero argument.

Cancel culture was practiced by Marxists. And even harder by the Communists. Just because your culture is limited or non-existent doesn't mean you have to spit your venom on me. When you are a Democrat, you talk, you exchange ideas, you THINK and above all you do not rely on your victories by taking them for granted. But it's for adults not for this completely uneducated generation, who feeds on social medias and spends days and nights pointing the finger at the others without ever looking at themselves in a mirror.

Just because you're trying to make it look like I'm not a dem because I'm not submit to your retarded agenda doesn't make you credible. More than ever it's about credibility for the Dems.

As a reminder: democracy consists of listening to all points of views and not censoring them otherwise it's called fascism. Communists and Marxists were fascists.

Now, leave the adults between them.

by Anonymousreply 62February 13, 2021 12:01 PM

And, they were cancelled because they voiced their disagreement with some ADMINISTRATION POLICIES (Iraq war) and not because they thought that the democratically elected government needed to be overthrown or for being racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, etc.

by Anonymousreply 63February 13, 2021 12:06 PM

“Cancel culture,” like “political correctness” is the conservative phrase of the comment to try and condemns progressives.

Ignore it

by Anonymousreply 64February 13, 2021 12:25 PM

R60 don’t forget the “left wing radicals”! The only radicals in the US are in the GOP. They are the ones trying to delegitimise elections after all.

by Anonymousreply 65February 13, 2021 12:26 PM

The abysmal stupidity of the Americans is limitless. Taking a utterly deplorable example (as it's often the case with the Republicans), is not enough to justify the equally deplorable behavior of the massive cancel culture that is currently rampant on the Left side. This is not a competition. What game is this? Like who are the dumbest? It's time to raise the level. This witch hunt bears a strong resemblance to McCarthyism's methods.

by Anonymousreply 66February 13, 2021 12:49 PM
