“Breaking Fast” Is Breaking Ground for Gay Muslim Representation

Hot on the heels of 2020 queer holiday romcoms Happiest Season, Dashing In December, and The Christmas Setup, 2021 brings us the VOD release of writer-director Mike Mosallam’s Breaking Fast, the first gay rom-com set during Ramadan.

Mid-Ramadan, a monthlong holiday during which observant Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, West Hollywood-based, gay Lebanese-American Mo (Haaz Sleiman) finds himself newly and unhappily single. But when sassy BFF Sam (Good Trouble’s Amin El Gamal) introduces him to the tall, handsome, all-American Kal (Michael Cassidy), Mo finds that despite their cultural differences, there may be something very special between them.

Michael Cassidy as in the guy from the short film "Dare" ?? I love him.

by Anonymousreply 1January 22, 2021 4:54 AM

Is the actor a genuine Muslim?

by Anonymousreply 2January 22, 2021 5:52 AM

[quote]Is the actor a genuine Muslim?

Yes, Muslim raised, but from interviews I've read he doesn't seem observant. He says he's spiritual.

Really charming film. I loved the best friend.

by Anonymousreply 3January 23, 2021 12:19 AM

How do you say "Snow Queen Bottom" in Arabic?

by Anonymousreply 4January 23, 2021 12:22 AM

Michael Cassidy likes playing the object of gay affection.

by Anonymousreply 5January 29, 2021 4:54 PM

I’ve never seen or met one gay Muslim, living here in Michigan, the Muslim capital of the US. In my entire life. I don’t see gay Muslim representation at Pride, I don’t see Pride-colored hijabs. I’ve never seen Muslims at Pride—ever. I’ve never seen anything “gay Muslim” not person, not business, not parade, period. At all. Zip, zero, nada. Nor even in Chicago. Maybe gay Muslims don’t live in Michigan.

by Anonymousreply 6January 29, 2021 5:08 PM

Weho and a sassy best friend, groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 7January 29, 2021 5:13 PM

At what point in the movie do the main characters get thrown off a building?

by Anonymousreply 8January 29, 2021 5:22 PM

This is just left-wing, woke BS that is so far removed from reality and actually causes more damage than not because this riles up Muslims.

by Anonymousreply 9January 29, 2021 5:26 PM

Islam is the most anti-gay of all religions. Why can't these people see that?

by Anonymousreply 10January 29, 2021 5:43 PM

Because they’re brown r10

by Anonymousreply 11January 29, 2021 6:15 PM

It was ok and Michael Cassidy is still attractive.

by Anonymousreply 12March 2, 2021 9:49 PM

I don't get it. We treat Christianity like it's a barbaric religion that's oppressive to LGBT people (which it is), we acknowledge the terrible aspects of it and how it's an evil religion, we even have movies made about how terrible of a religion it is (But I'm A Cheerleader, Boy Erased, etc)... why don't we treat Islam, which is just as homophobic and awful as Christianity, the same way?

Because we live in a Christian country and the horrible laws we have come from Christian idiots. It’s what people know and have had to live through in the West. Anti-gay laws didn’t end up on the books thanks to Muslim politicians. Consider the country you live in and what the majority religion is. We had people standing holding Bibles keeping black people out of schools. Christianity has been used in the worst possible way in places like the US, thus it’s a point of reference for people. They understand it.

by Anonymousreply 16March 2, 2021 10:19 PM

Gay Muslim Representation? What's next? Jewish Nazi Representation?

by Anonymousreply 17March 3, 2021 2:28 AM

[quote]Because we live in a Christian country and the horrible laws we have come from Christian idiots.

Gays have a soft spot for Muslims, even over in the UK where hundreds of Muslims protested teaching gay parenting in elementary schools. Not a few, but hundreds of Muslims protested. Gays love Islam, no matter how barbaric, no matter how murderous, no matter how inhumane to gays - everywhere. Here in the US, the UK, or anywhere in the world. Gays staunchly defend Islam, they vote for legislature to protect Muslims, they vote FOR Muslim candidates no matter what they do. No matter what they say about gays. But “American” Muslims are liberal and support gay rights! No they certainly are not and no they certainly don’t.

by Anonymousreply 18March 3, 2021 12:37 PM

And people always focus on Muslims but people forget Arab Catholics like Chaldeans and Lebanese. These groups detest gays just as much as Arab Muslims — and they vote Republican. Overlooking all Arabs is a mistake. They come from these third world countries like Iraq and Lebanon bringing their hardcore beliefs with them. I live in a very Araby state and I’ve experienced the hate from these groups. Arab Catholics are not like white Catholics at all.

by Anonymousreply 19March 3, 2021 12:43 PM

Haram!! Fatwa!!!

by Anonymousreply 20March 3, 2021 12:57 PM

As r19 stated, it’s about culture and not necessarily religion. As gay man from a Muslim heritage, my family who are all in America are incredibly supportive. Just because we’re not in tank tops and caftans or decked out in rainbow hajabs doesn’t mean we don’t exist. There are just as many gay Muslims as there are gay Christians, Jews, Hindus etc. Not all of are mincing queens but some of us are.

by Anonymousreply 21March 3, 2021 2:58 PM

[quote]Just because we’re not in tank tops and caftans or decked out in rainbow hajabs doesn’t mean we don’t exist.

Why not though?

by Anonymousreply 22March 3, 2021 3:11 PM

[quote]Not all of are mincing queens but some of us are.

I mean...so gay men who are prideful are “mincing queens”?

by Anonymousreply 23March 3, 2021 3:12 PM

If it were cultural, R21, how come anti-gay legislation is ubiquitous in the Muslim world, from North Africa to Indonesia, all very different cultures but all Islamic countries?

by Anonymousreply 24March 3, 2021 3:13 PM

I don’t know if R21 is telling the truth. Just take his post with a grain of salt. The “mincing queens” set off my BS-dar. That’s an “eldergay” Datalounger trope.

by Anonymousreply 25March 3, 2021 3:17 PM

This map is quite telling....

Why do these minorities like muslims, orientals, hispanics, african americans ALWAYS have to be paired with white guys?

It's so fucking SELF-LOATHING!

It would actually be fucking refreshing to see minorities paired with other minorities.

This dark/white combo is so fucking cliche already.

by Anonymousreply 27March 3, 2021 4:59 PM

Opposites attract, R27. It's not always, either. Also, it's none of your business asshole.

by Anonymousreply 28March 3, 2021 9:50 PM

It's funny and sweet and the dialogue addresses many of the issues replied above, including the bitch R27.

Also, Michael Cassidy is so cute!

Let’s not pretend we don’t have our own problems here in the US. As someone posted in another thread, it’s illegal to have anal sex in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Kansas, Kentucky, Texas and South Carolina

by Anonymousreply 30March 4, 2021 3:10 PM

Oh shut the fuck up, R30.

by Anonymousreply 31March 4, 2021 5:04 PM

R30, it probably illegal for straights, too, in those states.

by Anonymousreply 32March 6, 2021 3:22 AM

A movie about a Muslim bottom hung up on a white man. How totally ground-breaking.

by Anonymousreply 33March 6, 2021 3:26 AM

[quote] Yes, Muslim raised, but from interviews I've read he doesn't seem observant.

In that case, R3, this person is NOT a Muslim.

A Muslim who turns away from Allah and refuses to seek forgiveness MUST be Punished!

by Anonymousreply 35November 7, 2021 3:04 PM

My boyfriend is a Muslim.

by Anonymousreply 36November 7, 2021 3:24 PM

As in practicing, r36? Is his family okay with it, overall? And what country are you in? Big city or small town?

Sorry for all the questions, but it kind of makes a big difference to what we are talking about here.

by Anonymousreply 37November 7, 2021 3:36 PM

In modern times, Beirut has always been more cosmopolitan than most cities in the Arab world (Riyadh, Amman, Doha, Dubai, Tunis, Damascus), even during the Lebanese Civil War. If both of Sleiman's parents are in fact Sunni muslims, they were clearly not devout. Most Lebanese who emigrated to the US and Canada during the war were Maronite Christians or Greek Catholics, so my guess is he didn't grow up attending a Madrasa.

by Anonymousreply 38November 7, 2021 3:43 PM

R36 here. We are in Arizona. yes, he is practicing but it is a little difficult for him to het to the mosque with his work schedule. He only prays once a day. Maybe more but it may be silent prayers. His family is not aware that he is gay. They are back in Mumbai. He doesn't seem to have a conflict with being gay and being Muslim.

by Anonymousreply 39November 7, 2021 3:47 PM

[quote]it is a little difficult for him to het to the mosque

Freudian slip?

by Anonymousreply 40November 7, 2021 3:53 PM

There is no such thing as “gay Muslim”. That is a Western concept. I live in the Muslim capital of the US and there are no gay Muslims here. Maybe it’s just a coincidence. 😉

by Anonymousreply 41November 7, 2021 3:57 PM

The only “gay Muslims” that exist, are white gay men who fetishize this brutality.

by Anonymousreply 42November 7, 2021 3:58 PM

No such thing as living gay Muslims. The gay ones were already executed.

by Anonymousreply 43November 7, 2021 4:00 PM

Is that what you honestly believe r43, in every country. In the U.S? In Europe? Everywhere in the world, every gay muslim has been executed? Really?

by Anonymousreply 44November 7, 2021 4:05 PM

Worst movie I have watched this year or almost.
