Deodorants with slight but not overwhelming smell

Can anyone recommend a good deodorant/antiperspirant that has just a slight but not overwhelming fragrance that works well and doesn’t cost a fortune?

I used to use Arm & Hammer but it hasn’t been keeping me dry lately so i figured maybe I should try something else. Well, I’ve tried Suave powder deodorant and the smell was so fucking overwhelming and it didn’t do a good job of keeping me dry, so I threw that out after one use. Now I’ve tried Arrid regular scent deodorant and it’s fucking overwhelming in smell too and smells medicinal. I don’t want unscented because I need a slight scent to cover up armpit smell, but I don’t want an overwhelming scent either.

Any suggestions? And don’t recommend anything over $5. No way am I paying more than that for a stick of deodorant. I’m sick of wasting money on deodorants just to have to throw them out after one or two uses.

Schmidt’s Charcoal

I am very fond of Helmm deodorants. They are refillable, smell great, but not overwhelming. My favorites are Trailblazer and Hudson. Coastline is light, but smells like the opening of SJP's lovely, and Night Market is a dry sandalwood, and I prefer sandalwood with spices and a touch of vanilla.

They make both deodorant and antiperspirant formulations. The applicator is very attractive as well.

[quote]Schmidt’s Charcoal

I said nothing over $5.00. I just looked this stuff up and it’s $9.00 a stick.

by Anonymousreply 3January 22, 2021 1:42 AM

Mitchum roll on does the trick.

by Anonymousreply 4January 22, 2021 1:43 AM

I find most of the Dove Men’s Care line pretty tolerable. I’m sensitive to overpowering smells and that’s the line I’ve landed on for pleasant but mild scents. Clean Comfort or Extra Fresh are my go-tos. Less than $5 bucks a stick and you can usually get deals at Target or the drug store. I use the anti-perspirant but assume the regular deodorant smells the same.

I use Kiss My Face unscented stick deodorant - It may be $5 and change. I've also used Tom's unscented stick but it doesn't really stop the perspiration

by Anonymousreply 6January 22, 2021 1:47 AM

You could try Method, they have some nice subtle scents. I am not sure if they will fit within your miserly budget. I think with your $5 limit it will be either unscented, or overpowering.

by Anonymousreply 7January 22, 2021 1:48 AM

Original Old Spice antiperspirant/deodorant was perfect. A wonderful, clean smell. No "Alpine Avalanche Blizzard" or whatever. Of course they stopped selling it in the spring where I live, but maybe you could still find it and stock up.

by Anonymousreply 8January 22, 2021 1:50 AM

R6 Yeah, I need it to stop the perspiration.

by Anonymousreply 9January 22, 2021 1:51 AM

Schmidt’s is notorious for causing large tumor-like lumps in the arm pits. Avoid.

by Anonymousreply 10January 22, 2021 1:51 AM

Try one of the various crystal deodorants. They don’t smell like anything, no chemicals, and work great

by Anonymousreply 11January 22, 2021 1:52 AM

R10 WTF 😳???

by Anonymousreply 12January 22, 2021 1:59 AM

R4 and R5 Those will probably be my next ones to try then

by Anonymousreply 13January 22, 2021 2:00 AM

R8 I always imagine that having an old man smell. Is it actually good? And not overwhelming?

by Anonymousreply 14January 22, 2021 2:01 AM

Deodorant??? Never heard of it!

by Anonymousreply 15January 22, 2021 2:06 AM

Arrid Solid. Doesn’t irritate or dry with residue, either. Although strangely it’s seemingly more difficult to find on some grocery chains’ store shelves in lieu of its aerosol can version lately.

by Anonymousreply 16January 22, 2021 2:11 AM

R3 Oof. Missed that part.

by Anonymousreply 17January 22, 2021 2:13 AM

R15, I promise no old man smell! My dad wore Old Spice (and Brut...dear God), but this smells nothing like that.

by Anonymousreply 18January 22, 2021 2:16 AM

First of all, OP, learn the fucking difference between deodorant and anti-perspirant. A deodorant neutralizes odor - it doesn't control wetness. An anti-perspirant typically clogs up your pores with aluminum and powders to dry you out from pitting out.

Also, not a snob, but a deo or anti-p stick lasts MONTHS. A $9 or $12 product is pennies a day. If you are really that cheap ask the lesbians for advice.

by Anonymousreply 19January 22, 2021 2:18 AM

Tom's of Maine - you can get it at Trader Joe's...

by Anonymousreply 20January 22, 2021 2:18 AM

R16 I just tried the Arrid regular solid and it smells disgusting! It has a medicinal smell that never dissipates.

by Anonymousreply 21January 22, 2021 2:19 AM

I've not tried the men's line, but Dove deodorant works very well for dryness and has only a slight baby powder smell (or use the "fresh" smell option which smells like soap) One application lasts two days at least. More men use it than they let on and it works better than any deodorant I've used that is marketed toward men. My second recommendation is Arm and Hammer - it works as well as Dove, but It's harder to locate.

by Anonymousreply 22January 22, 2021 2:20 AM

All of these are sort of dependent on how they work with your skin too. I agree that Dove, Arm and Hammer, and Mitchum should be the first to try, but the first two irritated my pits.

by Anonymousreply 23January 22, 2021 2:23 AM

Side note, I left my deodorant at home once on a trip and grabbed some old spice as a quick last minute substitute. Gave me the worst headache I've had in years. The smell is way to strong and lasting, and it doesn't even work well. You still have the BO smell under the overpowering cheap cologne smell which combine to devastating effect. Maybe it didn't work with my particular body chemistry/natural smell, something of which you also need to be aware. But I'd strongly advise against it.

by Anonymousreply 24January 22, 2021 2:26 AM

R22, was it Old Spice High Endurance Original Scent? Because I will die on the Old Spice High Endurance Original Scent hill.

by Anonymousreply 25January 22, 2021 2:31 AM

R24, sorry

by Anonymousreply 26January 22, 2021 2:32 AM

I'm not sure which Old Spice it was, all I know is it ruined the entire first day of my trip. The headache was that bad. I dont thinking was some special variation, it was the classic old spice bottle. It smells different in bottle than it does on skin.

by Anonymousreply 27January 22, 2021 2:35 AM

Original scent Speed Stick. Smells like the sex I had in high school.

by Anonymousreply 28January 22, 2021 2:36 AM

I second R5. I use the spray ones, though.

by Anonymousreply 29January 22, 2021 2:37 AM

Try Dry Idea clear gel. Unscented.

Keeps me dry and stink free. It also doesn't stain.

by Anonymousreply 30January 22, 2021 2:42 AM

Have someone lick your pits everyday...HAWT

by Anonymousreply 31January 22, 2021 2:46 AM

TJ Maxx has the Schmidt’s stuff for $4.99. It’s not an anti-perspirant, though. Those chemicals cost a lot more.

by Anonymousreply 32January 22, 2021 2:48 AM

Dry Idea unscented roll-on, works well. I used to use their powder fresh one, but haven't seen that around for a while.

by Anonymousreply 33January 22, 2021 2:51 AM

The creme Keils one is great.

by Anonymousreply 34January 22, 2021 2:53 AM

Mitchum is almost perfect. Strongly recommended

About Schmidt’s (plenty more stories like this online):

[quote] Please, please, PLEASE don’t buy this! I’ve been on the hunt for a natural deodorant that actually works for probably 5 years until my aunt recommended this one and I absolutely fell in love. I’m a hair stylist, waving my arms in people’s faces all day long, so a good deodorant is crucial. My boyfriend and I have probably gone through about 10 of these with nothing but great results. Fast forward to 3 days ago, using a pack my aunt bought us from Costco, suddenly I start to feel some sort of deep irritation within one armpit. I think nothing of it and continue to apply. The next day, I wake up and I have large, deep, painful cyst-like lesions in one arm and that same deep irritation in the other. Today, after writhing in bed in pain all night, unable to sleep, it’s so bad I had to call out of work. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life. From googling, I’d convinced myself I had cancer until today I got the idea to read amazon reviews on the product and low and behold, there’s countless people having my same strange, now excruciating experience. I literally started crying with relief when I found others having the same problem because this has gotten so bad, I was certain it was something lymphatic and serious and I begrudgingly made an appointment to see a doctor. I’m so f*cking angry that I try to do something good for my body, using natural deodorant and I get screwed like this. As a reference, I’m a healthy 31 year old man. I’m allergic to nothing. My skin is tough as a rhino. I’m vegan and muscular. I use glycolic peels and retin a all over my face and body. I’ve never written a review like this in my life, BECAUSE I’VE NEVER HAD TO. There’s something terribly wrong with this product and it needs to be pulled from the market immediately. I don’t want anyone to have to go through this pain that I’m in. If anyone reading this has any solution, please contact me. My insta is mitchkarate. I don’t know what to do. Today, as much as I hate to do this, I started taking some old antibiotics. My family tells me to go to the doctor, but i’m smart enough to know that the only solutions would be biopsy or antibiotics. These lumps are far too large and deep to be lanced (at the moment?) without putting me under and having serious scarring. I will continue to update this review if there are any changes.

Tom's of Maine Tea Tree scent. Available at Walgreen's.

by Anonymousreply 40January 22, 2021 3:21 AM

R37, wow, did they ever find out what was the problem?

Scary shit!!! I use spray deodorants. I like wolftone scent from old spice.

by Anonymousreply 41January 22, 2021 3:33 AM

I Botox my underarms every 4 months so I never need deodorant.

by Anonymousreply 42January 22, 2021 3:45 AM

I've always used SpeedStick, unscented. No muss, no fuss.

by Anonymousreply 43January 22, 2021 3:49 AM

[quote]I Botox my underarms every 4 months so I never need deodorant.

That stops perspiration, not odor.

by Anonymousreply 44January 22, 2021 5:51 AM

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I’m going to be reviewing this thread while I’m in the store tomorrow in the deodorant aisle.

I’ll let you know how it goes and what I get.

by Anonymousreply 45January 22, 2021 5:52 AM

While we’re at it, let’s have a little debate: do you think solid or gel deodorant works better?

by Anonymousreply 46January 22, 2021 6:47 AM

[quote]I don’t want unscented because I need a slight scent to cover up armpit smell,

Unscented would work if you trim (not shave) your armpit hair.

by Anonymousreply 47January 22, 2021 10:43 AM

[quote]While we’re at it, let’s have a little debate: do you think solid or gel deodorant works better?

Using gel deodorant is like using a CROISSANT as a fuckin' DILDO!

It doesn't do the job and it just makes a MESS!

by Anonymousreply 48January 22, 2021 10:45 AM

I use Degree Black and White spray. I like the scent.

Ha! High school sex for me was Arrid Xtra Dry and Dial soap.

by Anonymousreply 51January 22, 2021 11:02 AM

You can buy native at target or online I didn’t wear deodorant or anti perspirant for years because I’d get those welts /irritation from the clogged pores. This one is mild enough not to stink up the joint with a Fake scent, offers protection without any side effects. It’s like $12 but lasts forever

by Anonymousreply 52January 22, 2021 11:03 AM

I'm a hairy bastard so not interested to smear a stick or gel all over pit hair. I prefer a spray and Mitchum Spray for Men works well. $10

by Anonymousreply 53January 22, 2021 1:10 PM

My favorite is the powder deodorants from Lush, The Greench especially. Most deodorants make me break out and itch, but I find this one is soothing and actually works better at controlling wetness and odor. It’s a pricier option, though. I’m poor, but this is one thing I splurge on.

I've been using Sure Unscented for years, because it has almost no detectable odor at all. It's why I started using it.

by Anonymousreply 55January 22, 2021 2:18 PM

I've heard cum makes a great deodorant.

by Anonymousreply 56January 23, 2021 12:29 AM

R55 for most of my adult life I used Sure Fresh Scent Invisible Solid but they apparently discontinued it four or five years ago. At some point Sure started a men’s line and the Fresh Scent was apparently intended for women but up until then it was unisex so I kept using it. The only time I see Sure brands now are at Big Lots or the dollar store so I wonder if they sold the name to a different company.

by Anonymousreply 58January 24, 2021 7:54 PM

I recommend Dove Dry Spray, cool essentials. It's just under $6 but worth the extra dollar.

by Anonymousreply 59January 24, 2021 7:58 PM

Op, I use the Arm & Hammer unscented deodorant and it works fine for me, and I live in Arizona. A & H also makes an unscented antiperspirant. You may want to give it a try.

I like to use colognes, so I prefer an unscented deodorant.

R60 Read the second sentence in my original post.🙂

by Anonymousreply 61January 25, 2021 10:12 AM

Well, I’ve been using Speed Stick Irish Spring for the past 3 days and this isn’t keeping me dry either. Definitely does not last 24 hours like it claims.

Tomorrow I’ll try the Dove Men’s Antiperspirant travel size that I bought (better to wast 98 cents instead of $5 for a full stick of it doesn’t work).
