You’re Fired! Jill Biden Fires White House Chief Usher
Today, Jill Biden fired the White House Chief Usher, Timothy Harleth. Harleth was hired by Melania Trump to fill the position of general caretaker, manager of the White House.
President Trump did not let go of Obama’s Chief usher into well into his term. Angella Reid, the first woman in that job was able to keep her job six months before the Trumps felt the need for a switch. Harleth was not afforded that opportunity by Jill Biden. The First Lady’s Office typically decides who the White House Usher is. Jill Biden’s office did not respond to the media for comment.
"It has been an honor to serve as Chief Usher, a position whose loyalty is not to a specific president, but rather to the institution of the presidency. I am proud that I had the opportunity to lead the Residence Staff to receive the incoming First Family with the utmost respect and dignity," Harleth said in a statement to The New York Times.

This guy previously worked for the Trump international DC Hotel. I’d get him out too, as he may have loyalty to Trump. I wouldn’t trust him.

This strikes me as a very petty story. Is the White House Usher (a position I've never heard of before) so consequential that he needs to issue a "statement" to the NYT? Good for you, dude, you achieved a "graceful" and "dignified" transition. It matters very little; just go home now.

Too bad that the position of Chief Usher has now apparently (thanks, Jill) a political post.
Some of the previous holders of the position served for 4 different Presidents (of both parties). And one served 6 different Presidents.
Even Trump, who despised Obama, was not so petty about the Chief User position.

The Trumps allegedly mistrusted the staff at the White House when they first arrived, believing the staff had allegiance to Obama. R69, per article in today's NYT's:
Nothing was normal in the transition from the Trump to the Biden administration, and turning over the White House to new occupants was no exception. For one, there was no chief usher to greet the Bidens when they arrived. Although it is unclear exactly what caused the delay with the doors — which are normally opened by Marine guards — the chief usher of the White House, who manages the residence, had been fired less than five hours earlier.
Timothy Harleth, the Trumps’ chief usher and a former rooms manager of the Trump International Hotel in Washington, was busy moving furniture on Inauguration Day when he was told at 11:30 a.m. that his services were no longer needed, people familiar with the process said. The incoming president’s counsel called the White House counsel on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the process, and said the Bidens planned to bring in their own person.

Yes, that's right. I don't know if "the Bidens" fired him, but he was setting up for them in the White House when he was informed he was being let go at 11:30. It was in the Washington Post or NYT story-- I can't remember which had the scoop. It seems really strange that he wasn't told in advance that he was out of a job. That's why I think there is more to the story.

Having looked into this, I feel sorry for the guy. He was fired by the Trumps for being cooperative with the transition. Adding my voice in recommending the book "Upstairs at the White House." I learned a great deal from it.
My interpretation is that they knew going in they did not want him, and this was their first opportunity to let him go. It's not as though Trump was allowing a smooth transition process.
Also, it makes sense for him to orchestrate the transition, as expecting someone new to the position to carry it out would be a challenge.
My partner said he read that the usher didn't want to return to working for Trump, but I haven't seen that myself.
I don't think it felt good for him to be let go, but Trump should not have turned it into a political position.

While people have served in a non-political manner at the WH for years, I think Dump has now set the precedent that you fire everyone to bring in "your" people and they go out the door with you too.
I don't blame Bidens for firing the guy given the way Dump & Co. behaved, but I do feel kind of bad for the guy since he 1. got shit for trying to cooperate with the Bidens 2. apparently was criticized for his handling of the COVID outbreak at the WH, though you know they told him he was a dead man if he let that info out. He apparently had no contact with Dump prior to the WH other than working for one of their properties.
Maybe more will come out, but he just seems like yet an average person destroyed by his association with Dump.

There are many lower level staff members who worked in the White House during the Trump years who've been there long before the Trumps came to town. They should be left alone. But I would definitely discharge anyone the Trumps hired.

He needed to be let go due to his negligence during the WH COVID outbreak. In his job, he failed to enact safety protocols for WH staff such as mandatory mask-wearing. If the President forbid his staff from protecting themselves with masks then he should have resigned. The fact that he didn't lead on COVID when the Bidens are coming in as a more responsible Administration was likely the reason for his termination. You can't have an irresponsible leader remain in your home.
I also wonder if he did not take the calls from Jill's staff from November through January 6th. She knew how this was supposed to go but he probably dragged his feet. Either way, he was a bitch and had to go. A person of honor that cared about the institution would have put their job on the line to uphold the safety of the WH and respect the time-honored traditions of the Presidential Transition processes.
Of course, he was helping to get things together at 11:30 AM on Wednesday. The Trumps had finally left and he wanted to keep his job. I don't feel sorry for this man. No one of honor would have remained at the WH once the virus started spreading to their staff with no mask mandates or social distancing rules set in place. He failed his team and the position of Chief Usher.

No r122. It was already noted prior to his termination that he caused issues with the established WH staff. Biden made it clear that he will not accept rude or incompetent people in his government. Sounds like this man, in a Trumpian fashion, was one of those two things that the Bidens would not accept. Jill and Joe are on the same team. When he said he would fire the dead weight he meant fire, not reassign.

He was never really qualified for that job in the first place. The title 'Head Usher' might sound like a figurehead position, but I would think it's almost as important as the position of White House Chief Of Staff. It's not a doorman job, that's for sure.

The news story as others indicate upthread is biased and twisted. The position of White House Usher is traditionally non-partisan; an usher is kept over from one administration to another. Trump fired the previous usher and replaced her with a lackey from his hotel; Jill Biden is sending that guy's ass back to Trumpland and restoring the traditional order of things. So all unreconstructed Trump-suckers can please die in a grease fire.

Another note, Jill, unlike any FL since maybe Barbara Bush has a unique history in DC as a Senator's wife. She wouldn't make these types of moves and risk her husband's image over some petty squabble. There is likely more to this story, but Jill would never be the one to talk about publicly unless this man makes a big stink.
I too think that he was following Trump/Malania's orders and delaying the transition coordination which was completely unacceptable. After January 6th, there is simply no room for the white lies that lead to an insurrection from anyone in the government.
I'm going to trust the wisdom of a woman who's successfully maneuvered through the politics of DC as a Senator's spouse over the tears of a MAGA shop bottom.

The door was opened by Marines. They don't show up out of the blue. They were probably watching the video feed to give the Biden's time for a photo outside of the building before opening the doors. I think the delay was due to the video feed so someone got the notice late. You can see in the video above that Hunter was about to tell an aide to open the damn door. I loved his little death stare.
I doubt anyone left inside was trying to play games. The Marines were always going to be the ones to open the doors.

R100 is totally wrong. Positions like Chief Usher at the White House have traditionally been apolitical. Previous Chief Ushers have served multiple Presidents of both parties. Previous Chief Ushers have spent as many as 40 years at the job.
It is evil, paranoid dumb dumb Trump--who politicizes everything--who got rid of a perfectly qualified person to hire a flunky.
Now that flunky is gone. Bye bitch!

As a foreigner, I'm always left bewildered by the politicisation of every little tiny public job in America.
I don't know whether this guy was good or bad at his job. Whether he ran an effective and smooth operation.
It just strikes me as completely petty and alien, to dismiss someone from their job, just because of the political opinions they hold. If he was awful at his job, then fair enough, sack him. For a land that professes free speech, it strikes me that that only holds good, if you're work for the winning side, not because you do a bloody good job.

reminds of me when the Joseph and the staff on Dynasty were rude to the new Mrs. Carrington; Blake summons them all in the middle of the night and humiliates them, FIRES one of them; and they ALL fall into line.
Krystle is devastated that someone lost their job; Blake says: "tomorrow, Joseph will come to me and say the man I fired is very sorry and he'd love to keep his job and I will give it to him and then he'll be grateful; you're rich now and this is how we handle things...and I will teach you....'
Dynasty's first season was unique; Collins was fab as Alexis, but the first season had a very unique tone to it. I loved it.

R159, if you read the previous replies, you will notice WHO fired all of the long-term staff at numerous places. It wasn't Obama or Biden.
These non-political jobs were MADE political by a shit flinging traitor who was too paranoid to trust anyone HE hadn't appointed.
This is what tin pot dictators do. They put in unqualified sychopants at every position so they are beholden to "dear leader" for the rest of his reign of terror.
There are numerous positions where the staff has been in place since W or even prior and no other First Family had an issue until these goddamned traitors moved in.

R132, You're right. I've never heard of Barbara Bush being petty or spiteful when it came to government employees or staff. On the contrary, the Geo. H.W. Bushes were known to stay home over the holidays so that their Secret Service contingent could be with their own families. His father had been a senator. And they themselves had had years in public service to learn that if they hadn't been raised that way.
Technical point: Bar Bush was never a senator's wife. Her husband had a safe seat as a congressional representative, then ran for senate and lost.

r170 I meant that she had about as much DC experience as Jill. The structure of my sentence wasn't clear. My apologies.
I reviewed the video again. Seems like the family knew this was not going to plan. Biden and Jill suffered through that entire song, then hugged to kill time. The family was waived up the steps but kept looking back at the staff. Hunter was saying a lot under his mask and looking back with daggers in his eyes. They all did it slick but it could have been a bad start if those doors didn't open or if they were locked out.

***BREAKING NEWS***
Apparently it was TRUMP who fired the usher, not Jill Biden—and it was part of a larger disruption in which he sent the WH staff home early so no one would be there to let the Bidens in.
Trump is indeed a small man in all but girth.

All indications are that the Trump team did everything they could to screw up Biden's move into the White House.
Which begs the question - What did Trump say in the note he left Joe? Can you really imagine that Trump said something nice? Was Joe just deflecting when he said the note was "very generous"? Will Biden every share the contents? I expect he won't.
