SLEUTH 1972
Watched SLEUTH the other day with Lord Laurence Olivier and Mr. Michael Caine. I forgot how good it was.
After some IMDB research, it seemed this was the last of Olivier's tour de force in acting. Sleuth in 1972, Marathon Man in 1976, A Bridge Too Far in 1977, and then The Boys from Brazil in 1978. Everything after that was shit (Wild Geese 2). I know he was a little sick and wanted to take care of his wife, Joan Plowright, but as his career faded Sir John Gielgud's took off! What a sad way to go out. .. Was he a closeted homosexual?
Caine, on the other hand, was a has been until Christopher Nolan gave him Batman Begins.
But SLEUTH is very good! I want to know what happens to Olivier's character though. I hope he got off honestly.

You try acting in front of a pull down middle school class photo background.

The Boys from Brazil was good, but weird.

OP - Olivier's performance in Boys from Brazil was pure camp, although it paled in comparison to Gregory Peck's beyond outlandish performance.
BTW Olivier was really bad in 1978's The Betsy.
I haven't seen Sleuth for so long, I've forgotten what it's all about. So I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

R7 Yeah, but Peck is still good, even if he is camp. James Mason gives the best performance though.

I find the story line boring for a film.
It works better as a play imho.

Dude, between "Sleuth" and Batman Begins" Michael Caine won TWO Oscars and TWO more nominations.

Well Joe Mankiewicz was never a great visual director. He just liked people talking.

It's interesting that all of the great SIR actors were gay/bi--Olivier, Gielgud, Guinness. Was Ralph Richardson bisexual too?

The "Sleuth" remake with Michael Caine and Jude Law was a supreme flop.

"Was Ralph Richardson bisexual too?"
Well, he never sucked MY cock.

R13 Ralph Richardson was not gay. His wife died in the 1950's I think. I don't think he ever remarried.
Guiness was not gay either. A devout Catholic who was married to the same woman his entire life.

Steve Guttenberg was also terrible in "The Boys from Brazil". But so cute...

R16. Guinness was gay, but closeted and filled with shame, the wife notwithstanding. Whether he acted in his homo desires I do not know.

I thought Margo Channing gave the best performance in the film.

OP he was never Lord Laurence Olivier. Lord Olivier or Larry but never Lord Laurence Olivier.

LO was 63-4 in this, and when I first saw it in 1973 I thought he was ancient and too old for the role.
I am now that age myself. Fuck.
(Michael Caine is going to be 88 this year).

Richardson was straight, his first wife god sick and died, he got involved with the second wife while the first was ill. Olivier was bi. Gielgud was gay.
And "Sleuth" is a damn good movie, worth re-watching because Caine and Olivier make everything so damn much fun! And I agree it was the last great performance Olivier put on film, certainly the last where you watch the film just to see him ham it up. They both hammed it up, but because they're the whole show, it's one of those movies where the actors had to play it big and chew the scenery, right up to the top but not quite over the top.

"Deathtrap" was the low-rent version of "Sleuth." Also with Michael Caine.

R25 All I know about Deathtrap is Christopher Reeve was Michael Caine's sugar baby

Olivier was charming in 1979's "A Little Romance". Probably the last good film he made.
