Happy 31st anniversary to Amy Grant’s BABY, BABY

This is one of those songs that makes me happy whenever I hear it. It instantly takes me back to my 14 year-old self, a young man wondering why I was paying more attention to Amy’s hot male lead instead of her.

We must be about the same age - she was the respectable face of Christian contemporary music before she sort kinda crossed-over in the early 90s. I always liked her because she never pushed the obnoxious evangelical crap like some other CCM types...

by Anonymousreply 1January 19, 2021 3:29 AM

It was a huge hit. The video is fun and she had great chemistry with model Jme Stein, who would later appear in her revamped Good For Me video.

It's the 30th anniversary, OP. It was released Jan 18, 1991.

Nicole Kidman has just announced she will play Amy Grant in the new movie adaptation...

having run out of other stars from the past to play in an effort to reinvigorate her sagging career

by Anonymousreply 4January 19, 2021 6:07 AM

A drag queen at the club used to lip sync to this all the time. I can never hear it without thinking of that tired old whore.

by Anonymousreply 5January 19, 2021 6:09 AM

Jme Stein, more fuckable than ever

Just fill it up with Botox, Nicole

This is a good song. I’m a total rockiest snob, but I liked this when it was brand new (I was 11-12), and I still think it’s good.

by Anonymousreply 8January 19, 2021 7:02 AM

Rockist* not rockiest

That’s what I get for using that stupid made-up word.

by Anonymousreply 9January 19, 2021 7:03 AM

I always thought she was beautiful. I loved the fact she kept her natural face and didn't fuck around with plastic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 10January 19, 2021 7:04 AM

This song created a mini babyboom all by itself in the early 1990s. Lots of couples were churning them out thinking the future was going to keep getting better. Then came 1994 and the Republican majority in Congress (Contract with America and Newt Gingrich) and our country went down the shitter. Honestly, it feels like we never recovered.

by Anonymousreply 11January 19, 2021 7:19 AM
This song created a mini babyboom all by itself in the early 1990s.

... It did?

by Anonymousreply 12January 19, 2021 7:25 AM

That whole album, Heart In Motion, is great. I made the mistake of seeing her live in London (well, Croydon, which should have been a warning bell) about ten years ago. Stupidly had thought it’d be a pop concert with maybe one or two of her gospel/religious songs. Totally the other way round though and it was a full on Christian happy clappy evening instead. The support act was a choir and a host kept preaching about Jesus between their songs and pretty much did a sermon in between the choir’s ‘set’ and Amy Grant’s. She did do 4-5 of her pop songs and sounded great but it was made so bizarre by just how Christian the whole night was.

by Anonymousreply 13January 19, 2021 7:32 AM

One of my favorite Oberheim bass lines ever.

by Anonymousreply 14January 19, 2021 7:37 AM

This was my Layla

by Anonymousreply 15January 19, 2021 9:04 AM

OP can't count for shit.

by Anonymousreply 16January 19, 2021 9:08 AM

When I was a kid in the 80s, my sister and I had three Amy Grant 8 tracks (too poor for cassettes) that'd we play over and over. When Baby, Baby came out we were forbidden to listen to it: Amy had gone to the side of Satan. And those three, well listened to 8 tracks were tossed in the trash.

by Anonymousreply 17January 19, 2021 9:10 AM

In a fun superswitch, Keith Urban will play Gary Chapman and Tom Cruise will get the lead as Vince Gill!

by Anonymousreply 18January 19, 2021 9:11 AM

I just love 💕 me some Darlene McBride

by Anonymousreply 19January 19, 2021 9:27 AM

Her Christian fanbase didn’t take to kindly to Amy’s cavorting with a hot young stud in the video.

by Anonymousreply 20January 19, 2021 10:49 AM

I don’t think she’s one of us! I don’t let my children listen to that!

by Anonymousreply 21January 19, 2021 10:55 AM

Christians ruin everything.

by Anonymousreply 22January 19, 2021 11:01 AM

I’m sure Vince Gill’s wife didn’t find it very Christian when Vince and Amy were fucking each other on the side.

by Anonymousreply 23January 19, 2021 11:07 AM

r2 the original Good For Me video was too lezzie for words!

by Anonymousreply 24January 19, 2021 11:10 AM

^ That’s what Amy thought too, hence the re-shot version with Jme.

by Anonymousreply 25January 19, 2021 11:11 AM

r13 Amy Grant is a Christian singer. What did you expect??

by Anonymousreply 26January 19, 2021 11:14 AM

I loved her 1985 album Unguarded. Find A Way was a good song from that summer.

R23 If you don’t mind, we don’t talk about that unpleasantness.

by Anonymousreply 28January 19, 2021 11:33 AM

As a gay liberal heathen it’s surprising that I have a soft spot for her. Possibly because she always seemed like a real person striving towards Christ and not some preachy hypocrite.

by Anonymousreply 29January 19, 2021 3:47 PM

She's hard not to like.

by Anonymousreply 30January 19, 2021 4:51 PM

I always liked her and didn't give a crap about her religious background. I was also jealous of her hair :)

by Anonymousreply 31January 19, 2021 9:51 PM

i have a soft spot for her too, growing up my best friends mom played her music all the time while i was always at their house after school. it was just background noise but it grew on me.

I remember i was a senior when baby baby came out, the radio really ran that song into the ground. it was everywhere

by Anonymousreply 32January 19, 2021 10:02 PM

I'm surprised the QAnon crowd hasn't claimed she's some Grand Satanic Priestess for this little gesture.

LEAD ME ON, the album she released prior to going “mainstream” with HEART IN MOTION, is a fantastic album and I prefer it to HIM. Much more mature and interesting even with the Christian themes, which are at least thought-provoking and more complex than typical contemporary Christian music of the time. “What About The Love” was co-written by Janis Ian and calls out Christian hypocrisy.

by Anonymousreply 34January 19, 2021 10:19 PM

She's one of those acts who was strictly local. Ditto Dave Matthews Band.

by Anonymousreply 35January 20, 2021 6:53 PM

I was the biggest Amy Grant fan when I was 13/14. Was in the fan club and got the newsletters...the whole nine yards. (This would've been '93/'94.) I can't recall her fan club manager's name (perhaps Lori Something?), but I wrote her a letter once and the manager wrote me back and sent some autographed pics from Amy, etc. I saw Amy in concert probably in Feb '95, and she sounded great. The rumours kept swirling about her and Vince Gill, and I bowed out of the fandom...at the time I knew nothing about Gary Chapman being an alcoholic, bitter asshole. (Keep in mind Amy didn't divorce him until '99, before marrying Vince in 2000.) All that to say, I just listened to "Lucky One" for the first time in years and am still mesmerized by her voice.

PS--My first post back since DL removed Primetime after the Capitol insurrection! (And yes, I'm a cheap whore who won't pay. I've read too many complaints on here from paying members.)

by Anonymousreply 36January 20, 2021 8:41 PM

Hearts in motion is the only Amy Grant album I ever bought and I agree with those above who said the whole album is good. Very well produced, well-sung hook-filled pop.

by Anonymousreply 37January 20, 2021 8:46 PM

Yikes at the tastless old cunts that like this shitty song. That repetitive beat is so fucking annoying.

by Anonymousreply 38January 20, 2021 8:54 PM

I agree with r34. Lead Me On is an excellent album. I prefer it over Heart in Motion, although HIM has a number of great pop songs. Lead Me On is quite a dark album. She was obviously wrestling with a lot at the time. Some great songwriters on it (Jimmy Webb, Janis Ian) in addition to Grant's own compositions.

I enjoy Heart in Motion and it was a big album at the time. It spawned a number of hits. I've always been fond of the video version of Every Heartbeat, which I prefer over Baby Baby.

Her follow-up albums House of Love and Behind the Eyes are also very good. House of Love tries too hard to be Heart in Motion 2, but it's still a good pop album.

by Anonymousreply 39January 20, 2021 8:56 PM

Love her music. I think she had a bad first marriage ane never really spoke about how bad it was. She moved on.

by Anonymousreply 40January 20, 2021 9:16 PM

When Lucky One was released I felt it was a deliberate attempt to replicate the sound of Baby Baby.

Which album was "I Will Remember You" on?

by Anonymousreply 41January 20, 2021 9:27 PM

I Will Remember You was on Heart of Motion.

by Anonymousreply 42January 20, 2021 9:51 PM

I was at a Christian high school in Houston Texas when HEART IN MOTION was released and we were told at a special assembly not to listen to it because it was secular and Amy was doing inappropriate things in the video with a man who was not her husband! This made me want to go out and buy the remixes!

by Anonymousreply 43January 20, 2021 10:31 PM

^Oh gawd! How unfortunate. Was Kevin Bacon one of your classmates trying to get Jon Lithgow to let up on the no-dancing laws?

by Anonymousreply 44January 20, 2021 11:38 PM

Yes, her Heart was indeed in Motion, for Vince Gill’s ass!

by Anonymousreply 45January 20, 2021 11:42 PM

This collaboration on baby baby with Tori Kelly is cool. Also, she’s so lucky to be fucked by Vince Gill.
Yes, her Heart was indeed in Motion, for Vince Gill’s ass!

I remember the making of the video for her duet with Gill, "House of Love", and watching her, I knew she was attracted to him. The story of their relationship and how they were both trying to deny their feelings for each other is the stuff of a Hallmark movie.

by Anonymousreply 47January 20, 2021 11:53 PM

Good song. But I Will Remember You is my favorite from that album.

by Anonymousreply 48January 20, 2021 11:57 PM

Except when Dr Biebs covered it.

by Anonymousreply 52January 21, 2021 12:13 AM

Back when we could attend concerts I saw Vince and Amy’s Christmas show in Nashville. They are amazing in concert. Amy’s voice has declined a little. Vince and the band surprised her by starting to play Baby Baby and she struggled with the high parts.

I am surprised they haven’t done a duets album because they seem to love singing together. Vince’s voice is incredible live. Their daughter is also very gifted.

by Anonymousreply 53January 21, 2021 12:24 AM

What the fuck are you all flyover Christian ladies? Amy Fucking Grant? Really?

by Anonymousreply 54January 21, 2021 12:26 AM

I had never heard of her but she gave a free concert at F.I.T. in NYC in 1984 or 1985. I thought she had a beautiful voice. Then in 1986 I was working at a radio station and she came in with Peter Cetera to promote the song Next Time I Fall and she was super nice, polite and funny. I’ve been a fan since. I follow her Insta and she had emergency heart surgery a couple of months ago but is doing well.

by Anonymousreply 55January 21, 2021 12:41 AM

Fumbling Toward Ecstasy is my favorite Amy Grant album.

Here in L.A. we were only listening to the House remix of Baby, Baby.

Always found her lovely. I swear, I saw "Les Miz" in L.A. around this time and her husband Gary played the lead and sang it so beautifully, so soft almost like Cat Stevens, not some big Broadway voice -- but I can never find any verification so wonder if I imagined it was him. Anyone else see this tour?

by Anonymousreply 58January 21, 2021 2:47 AM

She was part of that putrid Adult Contemporary "Lite FM" wave that stank up the late 80s and early 90s. Gloria Estefan, Jon Secada, Michael Bolton were some others. Music for secretaries in doctors and dentists offices. Puke worthy.

by Anonymousreply 59January 21, 2021 3:16 AM

She's one of the kindest, most generous and most authentic people I've ever met.

by Anonymousreply 60January 21, 2021 3:25 AM

Isn’t she and Vince’s daughter a lezzy?

by Anonymousreply 61January 21, 2021 9:48 AM

I Will Remember You...oh God! That song brings back a lot of quaint memories. Luckily, I can't remember the Lucky One. Praise the Lord! Amen.

by Anonymousreply 62January 21, 2021 10:32 AM

R61, you’re probably thinking of Gloria Estefan’s daughter.

by Anonymousreply 63January 21, 2021 11:19 AM

I always thought her ex husband was hot.

by Anonymousreply 64January 22, 2021 12:22 AM
I loved her 1985 album Unguarded. Find A Way was a good song from that summer.

I knew a fundie girl in college who, when this came out, said, "I'm concerned for her salvation." This, even though Amy was merely dipping a toe in the waters of secularism here compared with [italic]Heart in Motion.[/italic]

That reminds me of when I was in Campus Life/Youth for Christ in high school (mid-'80s) and their official magazine had an article about the evils of secular music. It featured a sidebar with a list of secular artists and their Contemporary Christian sort-of-counterparts, like a musical version of Designer Imposter fragrances: "If you like Annie Lennox, you'll love Margaret Becker (and you won't go to hell for listening to her)!"

by Anonymousreply 65April 27, 2021 1:16 AM

I’m an atheist but Lead Me On is one of my favorite songs. She questions why God allowed the Holocaust and slavery. I also love The Power. She seems too intelligent and aware to be a Bible thumping Christian but unfortunately for all the darkness and questioning in many of her songs that’s just what she is.

by Anonymousreply 66April 27, 2021 1:37 AM

I played the CD single at a party for some friends and one of them complained that I play the song over and over again. And he was kind of right since every version of the song on the CD single sounded pretty much the same with minor differences.
