I like Alistair well enough. There's not a lot to dislike about him, certainly, it's just that he is a little too soft spoken and sweet for my taste at least on air. He's done Escape to the Country for so many years that he does seem to be "phoning it in" at times, his mind somewhere else. Mutual friends all say he is very nice and more lively and sharp and fun than seen on TV.

My favorite Escape to the Country host (and of various allied series) is Jonnie Irwin. He actually has some professional insight into property and is kindly without being fawning or stupid. He avoids all the psychological probing that other hosts favor, the too sweet drivel "Now if I'm not mistaken I may have detected just a faint hint of hesitation...tell me how you feel about our mystery house, does it really tick all the boxes - because we were so worried that it might..." He's confident and informed and sexy where the others are saccharine.
