[Quote] He had a pretty interesting life post Olympics:
set the former American record in the 400 free at the 2004 Olympics and the former American and World records in the 800 free relay at the 2007 World Championships.
Keller struggled to adjust to post-Olympic life after 2008. He told the Olympic Channel podcast how swimming had set high expectations for his success which backfired in the work setting as it caused frustration. He explained how his past victories in the pool also made him feel “entitled” at first.
“I’ll be honest I wasn’t a good employee…for the longest time because I expected it all to come to me as easily as swimming did,” Keller said. “Once things started going south…I lost that enthusiasm.”
This struggle spiraled into all aspects of his life, culminating in the “reality check” which he pinpointed as the day he became homeless. In 2014, he and his wife got divorced, after which he lived out of his car for about 10 months. In an interview with USA Swimming, Keller explained that he did not have visitation rights to see his children for 4 years.
He described the reality behind what seemed like a sharp turn in his life. “It’s a slow leadup of shirking responsibility, and just letting the little things slide every day…it eventually builds a critical mass and once that critical mass is built it’s that last final straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Keller told the Olympic Channel. He detailed his outlook on life getting “lower and lower.”
Keller then talked about his gradual comeback after receiving “love and acceptance from his family,” specifically his sister and 2004 Olympian Kalyn Keller who took him in. He worked through this time by teaching swim lessons and running swim clinics.

I get that having a gold medal is very impressive. I'd be impressed if my coworker was a gold medalist - in anything. But, unless you're a true Olympic star like Phelps, or, for example, some basketball player who is known more from their NBA career (and then only maybe), I can't see it ever working out that people are going to bow down to you at work and let your shitty attitude and work slide. And that you'd expect people to is even more perplexing.

by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 13, 2021 2:16 AM |
"Divorced and not allowed to see his children..."
Courts never order that these days unless one parent is a real mess - abusive, severe psychiatric illness, drugged up to the point of not being able function or hide it, etc. And with most such people, courts will allow limited or supervised visitation, they don't completely stop a person from seeing their children unless they're proven to be an unrepentant monster.

I figure that this post-Olympic slump is common. The way athletes train nowadays, they don't seem to have time to do anything else. Do you make friends? Can they develop skills?
After their amateur athletics is over, then what?

"Is swimming a deplorable sport?"
It skews wealthy and white, which skews Republican, take that for what you will. That doesn't mean there aren't exceptions or that there's 100 percent correlation. And, of course, there are some swimmers who aren't wealthy and white. So, the potential is there.

They got him!
------------
Klete Keller, a three-time U.S. Olympic swimmer and gold medalist, was criminally charged Wednesday with participating in the Capitol riot, where he was identified in a video showing him wearing his USA Swimming jacket.
Keller is charged with obstructing law enforcement, knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and violent entry and disorderly conduct, according to a complaint in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.
The 38-year-old, who has been working as a real estate broker in Colorado, won five medals in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
His two gold medals came as a member of relay teams that included Michael Phelps, who holds 23 Olympic gold medals.
Members of the swimming community reportedly noted Keller’s presence on a video from the riot, which showed supporters of President Donald Trump physically resisting police officers who were attempting to clear them out of the Capitol rotunda.
The swimming news site SwimSwam reported that “Keller has deleted all of his social media accounts, but prior to their deletion, he was an outspoken supporter of President Trump.”
Hoff & Leigh, where Klete Keller was employed as an Associate Broker confirmed that Keller had resigned from the company on Tuesday.
Also charged Wednesday was Robert Packer, a man who was seen among the mob that invaded the Capitol wearing a sweatshirt bearing the words “Camp Auschwitz,” and the phrase, “Work Brings Freedom.”
Packer is charged with entering a restricted building or grounds, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

R93, those are good points. This seems to apply to another Olympic sport I enjoy -- gymnastics -- where it seems like a fair number of American female gymnasts I liked have transitioned into conservative Republifraus. I think that is changing though, as the sport has become more diverse over the years.
