Mr. Mayor on NBC
The new Tina Fey/Robert Carlock sitcom starring Ted Danson premiered last night and is streaming on Hulu. The first two episodes are up. The pilot is alright. There’s some good digs at woke youth culture and Holly Hunter is funny as a militant AOC-type, but Danson and the supporting characters are pretty bland and the actress playing his daughter is awful. The second episode isn’t very strong, but the show might pick up after a few episodes so I’ll give it another chance.
Has anyone else watched?

I see her midget husband got his ceremonial producer credit to make him feel like a man.

I watched the first episode. It was OK. Not much more than that.

I watched it and was underwhelmed. It feels very dated for as hip as it's trying to be.

The “wacky” elements of these Tina Fey shows is getting played out. It was used in small doses during the first few seasons of 30 Rock, but from season five on it was these dumb, forced surreal jokes trying to balance with serious storytelling and made both worse. Same thing with Kimmy Schmidt.
There was some really smart comedy with Holly Hunter and Female Minority Lead trying to barter and politic with council members and the whole thing was weighed down by the albatross of that idiotic PP PORN bit.

Will anyone ever tell Fey that she actually isn't the smartest person in the room?

Why does Danson still have a career? He hasn’t been funny since Cheers.

I actually loved Kimmy Schimdt. But this was, er, a miss.

I loved 30 Rock and a lot of her writing on SNL - beyond that I hate nearly everything Fey has her hands on.

R6 Ted Danson has NEVER been funny. NEVER!

Bad reviews.
52 on Metacritic and 48 on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was supposed to be a 30 Rock spinoff with Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy in New York City.
That would have worked.
Fey doesn't know L.A., and it shows.

So the character Tommy, his strategist, is gay right? Or at least the actor

It will probably be canned.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | 01/10/2021 |
Tina Fey should just bring back 30 Rock.

Ted Danson is like 100 years old now.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | 01/10/2021 |
He must've married someone much younger if he's able to have a 15 year old daughter.

All the reviews ive seen say its a piece of crap....

He's arguably the most successful television actor ever. I can't think of anyone who's been on more successful series than he has.

What other series has he been on since Cheers? I haven't followed network TV in a LONG time.

Becker and also the recent hit "The Good Place" R19

Danson is very good in his recurring role on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Ted was mildly funny as the pothead on 'Bored to Death'.

If i see he is in a show, i flip the channel asap.

Tina Fey has an ossified style of "madcap" tv, but she's not one of the Marx Brothers, or Irene Dunne & Cary Grant, so it isn't funny.

Loved Ted Danson in Damages, Bored To Death, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Place.
Not a fan of Tina Fey’s sitcoms, though.

Thr part in the trailer where Bobby Moynihan's character refers to the mayor's daughter as his wife, even though it's clearly a young teen girl standing next to Ted Danson (who's 73 years old).... like really? We're gonna stretch this tired gag THAT far? Yikes. "It can be very confusing here in LA." WOMP WOMP. This writing is like some Saved by the Bell episode.

I thought it was awful and poorly timed—no one finds a clueless ex-businessman-turned-incompetent politician particularly funny at the moment, as likable and benign an actor as Danson. Fey’s humor, which I have enjoyed in the past, is really uneven these days.

When he gets uber stoned on the gummies was fun. The mayor’s paranoia when the mascot comes toward cracked me up. I couldn’t stop laughing.

I gave up 5 minutes into last night's episode. Perhaps Baldwin should have checked his ego and made the deal. Hilaria could have been cast as his "wellness expert".

You think she'd be able to hear it?
