Mr. Mayor on NBC

The new Tina Fey/Robert Carlock sitcom starring Ted Danson premiered last night and is streaming on Hulu. The first two episodes are up. The pilot is alright. There’s some good digs at woke youth culture and Holly Hunter is funny as a militant AOC-type, but Danson and the supporting characters are pretty bland and the actress playing his daughter is awful. The second episode isn’t very strong, but the show might pick up after a few episodes so I’ll give it another chance.

Has anyone else watched?

I see her midget husband got his ceremonial producer credit to make him feel like a man.

by Anonymousreply 1January 8, 2021 11:06 PM

I watched the first episode. It was OK. Not much more than that.

by Anonymousreply 2January 8, 2021 11:13 PM

I watched it and was underwhelmed. It feels very dated for as hip as it's trying to be.

by Anonymousreply 3January 8, 2021 11:16 PM

The “wacky” elements of these Tina Fey shows is getting played out. It was used in small doses during the first few seasons of 30 Rock, but from season five on it was these dumb, forced surreal jokes trying to balance with serious storytelling and made both worse. Same thing with Kimmy Schmidt.

There was some really smart comedy with Holly Hunter and Female Minority Lead trying to barter and politic with council members and the whole thing was weighed down by the albatross of that idiotic PP PORN bit.

by Anonymousreply 4January 8, 2021 11:23 PM

Will anyone ever tell Fey that she actually isn't the smartest person in the room?

by Anonymousreply 5January 8, 2021 11:39 PM

Why does Danson still have a career? He hasn’t been funny since Cheers.

by Anonymousreply 6January 8, 2021 11:42 PM

I actually loved Kimmy Schimdt. But this was, er, a miss.

by Anonymousreply 7January 9, 2021 12:51 AM

I loved 30 Rock and a lot of her writing on SNL - beyond that I hate nearly everything Fey has her hands on.

by Anonymousreply 8January 9, 2021 3:05 AM

R6 Ted Danson has NEVER been funny. NEVER!

by Anonymousreply 9January 9, 2021 4:05 AM

Bad reviews.

52 on Metacritic and 48 on Rotten Tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 10January 9, 2021 4:07 AM

It was supposed to be a 30 Rock spinoff with Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy in New York City.

That would have worked.

Fey doesn't know L.A., and it shows.

by Anonymousreply 11January 9, 2021 4:08 AM

So the character Tommy, his strategist, is gay right? Or at least the actor

by Anonymousreply 12January 11, 2021 2:40 AM

It will probably be canned.

by Anonymousreply 13January 11, 2021 2:56 AM

Tina Fey should just bring back 30 Rock.

by Anonymousreply 14January 11, 2021 3:42 AM

Ted Danson is like 100 years old now.

by Anonymousreply 15January 11, 2021 3:42 AM

He must've married someone much younger if he's able to have a 15 year old daughter.

by Anonymousreply 16January 11, 2021 3:44 AM

All the reviews ive seen say its a piece of crap....

by Anonymousreply 17January 11, 2021 5:24 AM

[quote]Why does Danson still have a career? He hasn’t been funny since Cheers.

He's arguably the most successful television actor ever. I can't think of anyone who's been on more successful series than he has.

by Anonymousreply 18January 11, 2021 5:31 AM

What other series has he been on since Cheers? I haven't followed network TV in a LONG time.

by Anonymousreply 19January 11, 2021 5:39 AM

Becker and also the recent hit "The Good Place" R19

by Anonymousreply 20January 11, 2021 5:43 AM

Danson is very good in his recurring role on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

by Anonymousreply 21January 11, 2021 5:45 AM

Ted was mildly funny as the pothead on 'Bored to Death'.

by Anonymousreply 22January 11, 2021 5:47 AM

If i see he is in a show, i flip the channel asap.

by Anonymousreply 23January 11, 2021 5:51 AM

Tina Fey has an ossified style of "madcap" tv, but she's not one of the Marx Brothers, or Irene Dunne & Cary Grant, so it isn't funny.

by Anonymousreply 24January 11, 2021 7:54 AM

Loved Ted Danson in Damages, Bored To Death, Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Place.

Not a fan of Tina Fey’s sitcoms, though.

by Anonymousreply 25January 11, 2021 8:00 AM

Thr part in the trailer where Bobby Moynihan's character refers to the mayor's daughter as his wife, even though it's clearly a young teen girl standing next to Ted Danson (who's 73 years old).... like really? We're gonna stretch this tired gag THAT far? Yikes. "It can be very confusing here in LA." WOMP WOMP. This writing is like some Saved by the Bell episode.

by Anonymousreply 26January 11, 2021 8:11 AM

I thought it was awful and poorly timed—no one finds a clueless ex-businessman-turned-incompetent politician particularly funny at the moment, as likable and benign an actor as Danson. Fey’s humor, which I have enjoyed in the past, is really uneven these days.

by Anonymousreply 27January 11, 2021 3:29 PM

When he gets uber stoned on the gummies was fun. The mayor’s paranoia when the mascot comes toward cracked me up. I couldn’t stop laughing.

by Anonymousreply 28January 11, 2021 4:03 PM

I gave up 5 minutes into last night's episode. Perhaps Baldwin should have checked his ego and made the deal. Hilaria could have been cast as his "wellness expert".

by Anonymousreply 29January 15, 2021 12:39 PM

[quote]Will anyone ever tell Fey that she actually isn't the smartest person in the room?

You think she'd be able to hear it?

by Anonymousreply 30January 15, 2021 1:09 PM

Y'all are vicious.

by Anonymousreply 31February 24, 2021 10:14 AM

UK here. I've been watching this on my IPTV provider and I love it!

As a parody of the Californian spirit it is so funny. I really look forward to tuning in each week.

by Anonymousreply 32February 24, 2021 10:19 AM

R26 I haven't seen the show, but they show that scene in commercials for it and it makes me cringe. If she had looked like a twentysomething, the joke would've been lame, but it still would've landed, but she looks like a literal CHILD.

by Anonymousreply 33February 24, 2021 10:52 AM

Has this been cancelled or has it stopped mid shooting due to Covid?

It's a guilty pleasure of mine.

by Anonymousreply 34March 23, 2021 9:25 AM

THIS is the best gig Holly Hunter can get now?

by Anonymousreply 35March 23, 2021 1:14 PM

I like her in it. To be honest, she aged so much that I didn't recognise her.

by Anonymousreply 36March 23, 2021 3:49 PM

[quote]Has this been cancelled or has it stopped mid shooting due to Covid?

It was only able to film nine episodes of its 13-episode order due to Covid. It's been renewed for a second season, however.

by Anonymousreply 37March 23, 2021 3:52 PM

Ted Danson pissed away his Good Place credibility on....this?

by Anonymousreply 38March 23, 2021 3:55 PM

I like him in it.

It's light, fluffy, fun.

by Anonymousreply 39March 24, 2021 12:08 AM

R35 she didn't make a move for almost a decade after Thirteen. She's hardly in demand.

by Anonymousreply 40March 24, 2021 12:13 AM

I like the character she plays.

Kinda quirky.

by Anonymousreply 41March 24, 2021 12:20 AM

I watch a little bit of it. I was so confused as to why Ted Danson’s character has a daughter that is in high school. Seems like she should actually be his grandchild.

by Anonymousreply 42March 24, 2021 12:32 AM

Ted's character is a late bloomer.

by Anonymousreply 43March 24, 2021 2:09 AM

I watched half of the first episode and switched channels. Proof that Tina Fey's humor is hit or miss.

by Anonymousreply 44March 24, 2021 3:22 AM

Both Tina's shows, "30 Rock" and "Great News" were terrible in their first seasons. The problem is by the time Great News had fixed their problems the viewers didn't want to return. 30 Rock was constantly on the bubble of cancellation.

I liked Kimmy Schmidt's first season but I wouldn't call it terrible. It improved in Season 2 when Carol Kane became a regular.

She needs time to find her footing.

by Anonymousreply 45March 24, 2021 3:28 AM

I think that the audience focus groups were interesting. They wanted less of the daughter in it.

by Anonymousreply 46March 24, 2021 12:53 PM

r37 It has not been renewed.

by Anonymousreply 47March 27, 2021 6:31 PM

[quote]It has not been renewed.

It's really not difficult to Google before you post.

r48 Sorry--I was using my renewal bible, which was dated the same day as the renewal was announced, so I guess it was too late to make the list.

Apology accepted!

by Anonymousreply 50March 27, 2021 6:35 PM

Please god.

Call me Kat is getting renewed? It's awful.
