Delivery driver on Long Island isn't happy with an $8 tip so she takes the food back

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 167January 8, 2021 3:51 AM

Completely understandable depending upon the neighborhood delivered in. Was it perhaps the Baldwin’s in exile house? Did she answer the door speaking Spanish pretending to be the help?

by Anonymousreply 1January 5, 2021 10:37 PM

LOL, props to the bitch, she's DLer.

by Anonymousreply 2January 5, 2021 10:39 PM

It is this type of moxie that will ensure that we win the coming economic war against the Chinese.

by Anonymousreply 3January 5, 2021 10:41 PM

So now he’s jobless??

by Anonymousreply 4January 5, 2021 10:45 PM

What a Karen. If she keeps this shit up, she's going to do it to the wrong person (male or female) one day and get her head punched in.

by Anonymousreply 5January 5, 2021 10:45 PM

*She’s

by Anonymousreply 6January 5, 2021 10:46 PM

I hope that customer asked to speak to the manager.

by Anonymousreply 7January 5, 2021 10:47 PM

12 miles shouldn't be 40 minutes; with traffic? I don' t know, but don't take the order if it's going to be that long.

by Anonymousreply 8January 5, 2021 10:48 PM

By the way, she's fucking lying. 12 miles is 20 minutes where I live (I live in a rural area and that's exactly how far the nearest big town is from me). I had it on my GPS multiple times until I learned how to get there by heart. I don't know how fucking slow she's driving for it to take her 40 minutes to drive 12 miles.

by Anonymousreply 9January 5, 2021 10:48 PM

how much was the food?

by Anonymousreply 10January 5, 2021 10:48 PM

She’s probably counting the wait time for the order.

There’s no way that customer didn’t call and complain about her.

by Anonymousreply 11January 5, 2021 10:53 PM

My aunt was pulled over by a cop on the Belt Parkway years ago for driving too slow.

Even she could have driven 12 miles in less than 20 minutes

by Anonymousreply 12January 5, 2021 10:54 PM

So when she brought the food back what was she going to do hand it to the manager and say she didn't give it to the guy because she didn't like the tip? And the manager is going to say 'Gee I'm glad you didn't give it to the guy so I'll just throw it out.'?

by Anonymousreply 13January 5, 2021 10:56 PM

Why at the beginning does she say, "I can speak too, actually."

by Anonymousreply 14January 5, 2021 10:57 PM

What a lousy gig. But yeah, how much was the bill?

by Anonymousreply 15January 5, 2021 10:58 PM

$8 is a really shitty tip=, but she's full of shit too. I also have the same questions as R13. She cost that store money and caused friction with a customer. No fucking way did she lah-dee-dah back to the store with the food and get off Scott free. If anything she probably took it home with her and quit or ghosted her shitty gig.

by Anonymousreply 16January 5, 2021 11:01 PM

She has had insufficient.

by Anonymousreply 17January 5, 2021 11:02 PM

Why is this bitch ringing door bells and touching people's food without a mask on??

by Anonymousreply 18January 5, 2021 11:03 PM

12 miles can easily take 40 minutes in traffic, especially on Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 19January 5, 2021 11:04 PM

I think this is Long Island where it does take that long to drive 12 miles? But she does have a lot of balls and should be wearing a mask.

by Anonymousreply 20January 5, 2021 11:06 PM

Maybe she walked.

by Anonymousreply 21January 5, 2021 11:06 PM

Sorry r19, didn't see your post before I posted.

by Anonymousreply 22January 5, 2021 11:07 PM

My question is, does the restaurant get a tip when you order from a third party delivery service?

by Anonymousreply 23January 5, 2021 11:07 PM

Girl's got balls. I don't order delivery - do delivery people actually do things like that?

by Anonymousreply 24January 5, 2021 11:07 PM

When I was waiting tables in college, I remember I had this impossible cunt at one table who complained about everything. She snapped her fingers at me all night long and ordered me around like a servant. She finally snapped her fingers one too many times at me, and I let her have it. Of course, she threatened to leave me no tip and complain to the manager. I told her I didn't want her damn money, and I'd not to bother because I'd tell the manager first. I just wanted her gone.

I told my manager about it immediately. She supported me, bless her heart.

by Anonymousreply 25January 5, 2021 11:09 PM

How long should it take to drive from Commack to Smithtown?

by Anonymousreply 26January 5, 2021 11:09 PM

How much would the food be if $8 could be considered a fair tip? We hear a woman in the background saying that's a lot.

by Anonymousreply 27January 5, 2021 11:10 PM

Depends on the time of day. 347 can be a parking lot and it can DEFINITELY take 20 minutes to go 12 miles without a doubt.

by Anonymousreply 28January 5, 2021 11:11 PM

She lies about the distance and even says that she got it to his house early. So which is it: the 11 miles took 40 minutes and OMG, you cheap bastard - or - the 11 miles took no time because I got it here early (!!) but I’m mad enough about the tip that I’m going to waste your time and mine and drive “40 minutes” back to the restaurant.

by Anonymousreply 29January 5, 2021 11:12 PM

[quote] and get off Scott free.

Oh, dear!

by Anonymousreply 30January 5, 2021 11:12 PM

$8 is a great tip!

by Anonymousreply 31January 5, 2021 11:12 PM

$8 is 20% of $40

by Anonymousreply 32January 5, 2021 11:13 PM

$8 is 20% of $40, and $40 of groceries would hardly need to be delivered. It's a shitty tip.

by Anonymousreply 33January 5, 2021 11:14 PM

Delivery people aren't entitled to the same kind of tips waitstaff are. For one, you're not hustling like you would be if you were waiting tables. Second- you get paid a better hourly rate than waitstaff. There's no fucking way I would give my delivery person a 20-25% tip, especially if I'm paying a delivery fee on top of it. The ONLY exception I make is when someone has to shop for me, like on Instacart. I treat those people like gold, because they have to run around the store, they have to let me know if something is out of stock, find out what I want in lieu (and I make sure I'm right by the phone or laptop while they shop so I don't make them wait). I tip those people very well, especially having to shop for me during COVID. But some asshole who has to drive a mile after picking up a bag of food? Take what I give you and shut up.

by Anonymousreply 34January 5, 2021 11:14 PM

R26 I just looked it up on Google Maps. Fastest route is 11 minutes via NY-24 E (5.5 miles) and the longest route is 13 minutes via Veterans Memorial Highway (7.3 miles). Thus I don't know where she's getting the 12 miles or 40 minutes from.

by Anonymousreply 35January 5, 2021 11:14 PM

[quote] $40 of groceries would hardly need to be delivered.

I've ordered $40 worth of groceries many times.

by Anonymousreply 36January 5, 2021 11:15 PM

This cuntiness is quite common for the trash of Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 37January 5, 2021 11:15 PM

Travel time from Commack, NY to Smithtown, NY

How long does it take to drive? 6 minutes, 49 seconds

Find out how many hours from Commack to Smithtown by car if you're planning a road trip.

by Anonymousreply 38January 5, 2021 11:15 PM

A bucket of water thrown out of the upstairs would have been an appropriate response.

Unless it’s a one story home. Then a hosing would have sufficed.

At the very least, turn the sprinkler on her.

by Anonymousreply 39January 5, 2021 11:15 PM

What’s she going to do—return the food and demand the restaurant give the guy who ordered a refund?

The restaurant is going to say, uh no

by Anonymousreply 40January 5, 2021 11:16 PM

[quote] it can DEFINITELY take 20 minutes to go 12 miles without a doubt.

Yeah but she's claiming it took 40 minutes, darls.

by Anonymousreply 41January 5, 2021 11:16 PM

Okay, I just watched the video. She is a straight up entitled cunt and needs to be fired and never hired by anyone again.

by Anonymousreply 42January 5, 2021 11:16 PM

Release the hounds.

by Anonymousreply 43January 5, 2021 11:17 PM

We have no idea if it's a shitty tip or as someone said she's a DLer.

by Anonymousreply 44January 5, 2021 11:17 PM

R41, thanks. My bad.

by Anonymousreply 45January 5, 2021 11:23 PM

[quote] $8 is 20% of $40, and $40 of groceries would hardly need to be delivered. It's a shitty tip.

The bitch didn’t make the food, serve it and clean up afterwards. She picked up a bag from a restaurant and handed it to someone FFS. Plus, she took the job.

by Anonymousreply 46January 5, 2021 11:24 PM

I don't usually believe in this, but I want this bitch to be doxxed so badly.

by Anonymousreply 47January 5, 2021 11:25 PM

It should have ended with the door being opened and a solid object hitting her in the head and knocking her out as she walked off in a huff. This unmasked entitled brat needs to be dragged hard.

by Anonymousreply 48January 5, 2021 11:26 PM

Commack to Smithtown isn't really that far unless you hit major traffic. Even so, bitch, you're so fired!

by Anonymousreply 49January 5, 2021 11:27 PM

R35, I have no idea where you got your information from bevause 24 is nowhere near there.

Also, do you know where the customer’s house is because on Long Island you can’t just put in two hamlets and make the assumption.

And Smithtown is not only a town on Long Island but also a hamlet.

by Anonymousreply 50January 5, 2021 11:27 PM

What is the generally accepted rate for delivery driver tips? I always do 20%, and I live in a town that the average distance to get anywhere does not exceed 15 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 51January 5, 2021 11:28 PM

So did the restaurant get stuck with the bill for the order - or did the person who ordered the food pay the bill and got no food? Anything I order is take-out since the restaurants I frequent are so close to me.

by Anonymousreply 52January 5, 2021 11:28 PM

The bag she took away didn’t look very big.

It also looked to be plastic, and aren’t those banned in Suffolk County?

by Anonymousreply 53January 5, 2021 11:28 PM

I'm surprised that it only took 40 minutes to drive 12 miles in Long Island. People saying otherwise have never been to Long Island.

by Anonymousreply 54January 5, 2021 11:28 PM

You don't understand. My dad makes me pay the insurance on my Benz and I'm doing this lousy job as a FAVOR to you. Pony up the bucks you cheap bastard!!!

by Anonymousreply 55January 5, 2021 11:29 PM

[quote] Commack to Smithtown isn't really that far unless you hit major traffic.

Unless you’re way up north and the only realistically viable route is 25A. One lane each way. Fuhgeddaboutit.

by Anonymousreply 56January 5, 2021 11:29 PM

[quote][The bag] also looked to be plastic, and aren’t those banned in Suffolk County?

Not for food takeout.

by Anonymousreply 57January 5, 2021 11:30 PM

I gave the delivery guy a $7 tip on a $25 order tonight. That was on top of the $1 delivery fee.

He biked six blocks.

by Anonymousreply 58January 5, 2021 11:31 PM

Unless you're hitting the 10 for $10 canned goods sale, $40 is about one large bag of groceries, or two medium sized ones if you got bulky items.. If you bought meat it's probably just one bag.

by Anonymousreply 59January 5, 2021 11:32 PM

I grew up in Smithtown and an $8 tip is an insult.

I would have paid for her to get into a good college.

But, that’s me.

by Anonymousreply 60January 5, 2021 11:35 PM

R50 No need to mansplain anything to me, cunt. I lived on Long Island for 20 years up until a couple of months ago. This bitch is a fucking liar and the video should have ended with her picking her broken teeth up off this guy's driveway.

by Anonymousreply 61January 5, 2021 11:37 PM

[quote] He biked six blocks.

Mmmmmm. Did he have those spandex riding pants on?

Mmmmmmmmm.

by Anonymousreply 62January 5, 2021 11:38 PM

Why couldn't you walk six blocks each way, R58? Or are you too obese to leave the house?

by Anonymousreply 63January 5, 2021 11:40 PM

Who the fuck is mansplaining? And who the fuck says that but a woman?

If you lived on Long Island you’d know you’re way way off by suggesting 24, which isn’t even in the same fucking county!

You sound like a miserable bitch.

by Anonymousreply 64January 5, 2021 11:40 PM

I call this ad, “Amy Fisher for Deliveroo”

by Anonymousreply 65January 5, 2021 11:41 PM

R64 Shouldn't incels like you be on 4Chan?

by Anonymousreply 66January 5, 2021 11:43 PM

Why was the food still on the outside if he had tipped her ?

by Anonymousreply 67January 5, 2021 11:43 PM

I dont get it, dont the delivery people get anything from doordash, isnt it like uber but for food? They dont just rely on tips do they?

by Anonymousreply 68January 5, 2021 11:44 PM

[quote]Why was the food still on the outside if he had tipped her ?

Contact-free delivery. She waited on his doorstep until she saw the tip on her phone.

by Anonymousreply 69January 5, 2021 11:46 PM

I was on a conference call for work when I ordered, and I was hungry, R63.

I didn’t have lunch.

Don’t judge.

by Anonymousreply 70January 5, 2021 11:46 PM

[quote] Shouldn't incels like you be on 4Chan?

What are you, 12?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 71January 5, 2021 11:54 PM

Because nobody ever does that on here right, R70?

by Anonymousreply 72January 5, 2021 11:54 PM

R71 Should I have called you a Russian instead?

by Anonymousreply 73January 5, 2021 11:54 PM

The fuck I care?

by Anonymousreply 74January 5, 2021 11:56 PM

A restaurant which I sometimes order from is 1 1/2 blocks away and a tip a minimum of $8 or 30%, whichever is more. The customer was super cheap but the delivery person was bad too. The restaurant should have a delivery fee if the order is not in the same town.

by Anonymousreply 75January 6, 2021 12:06 AM

[quote] By the way, she's fucking lying. 12 miles is 20 minutes where I live (I live in a rural area and that's exactly how far the nearest big town is from me).

But not everyone lives in Dumbfuckistan like you do

by Anonymousreply 76January 6, 2021 12:09 AM

No one knows if it is a good tip or not because we don't know how much the order was.

Until someone finds out that detail its all bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 77January 6, 2021 12:14 AM

Why doesn’t she just sell her pussy like all the LI girls do?

by Anonymousreply 78January 6, 2021 12:17 AM

Tips are getting out of hand : 30%?

by Anonymousreply 79January 6, 2021 12:17 AM

Does the price of the order even matter when you’re tipping someone to drive it to you?

NO

by Anonymousreply 80January 6, 2021 12:18 AM

Tip 30%???????????

Fuck the restaurant industry of it costs 30% even if they’re not even serving you

by Anonymousreply 81January 6, 2021 12:18 AM

Because she would have gotten less than $8, R78.

by Anonymousreply 82January 6, 2021 12:21 AM

Don’t be sending this one into the hood!

by Anonymousreply 83January 6, 2021 12:23 AM

I’m guessing that like so many LIers, she’s a Republican

by Anonymousreply 84January 6, 2021 12:29 AM

So she ultimately LEFT with the $8 tip AND the guy's food? Accept the "lousy" tip and move on bitch.

by Anonymousreply 85January 6, 2021 12:30 AM

30% for a tip? No I don't think so.

People will just stop ordering delivery food and then they will all be out of a job. And they will all look shocked.

by Anonymousreply 86January 6, 2021 12:30 AM

Maybe these people instead of complaining about a tip should be glad they have any kind of job during an economic depression and deadly pandemic?

by Anonymousreply 87January 6, 2021 12:34 AM

Of course r80.

Tipping is still based on the price of the order. Open any delivery app, their suggested tip is a percentage of the total. Its the same as eating at the restaurant, where a fair tip is considered w0% of the total.

by Anonymousreply 88January 6, 2021 12:34 AM

What pisses me off is that $8 was on top of probably a $3 delivery fee and a $3 “service fee.”

You’re $14 in the hole before you even add one thing off the menu.

by Anonymousreply 89January 6, 2021 12:34 AM

20%*

by Anonymousreply 90January 6, 2021 12:35 AM

Datalounge always melts down over tipping.

by Anonymousreply 91January 6, 2021 12:54 AM

This isn't about tipping, it's about being an entitled, unprofessional cooze who should go live with mommy and daddy for the rest of her life.

by Anonymousreply 92January 6, 2021 1:03 AM

[quote] should go live with mommy and daddy

She already lives with mommy and daddy who told her to get a job, for a little literary experience; this is all she could find, hence the hissy fit about the tip as she realizes just how little she is worth commercially.

by Anonymousreply 93January 6, 2021 2:31 AM

This made me laugh. A delivery person can never demand a higher tip. That is why you are doing a delivery service. And asking to speak with someone with no mask ... fuck her. I hope she was fired.

by Anonymousreply 94January 6, 2021 2:38 AM

The app suggests a number of tips eg $8, $9, $10. There is also an 'other' option. This is on top of all the extra charges to do with service and convenience etc.

by Anonymousreply 95January 6, 2021 2:43 AM

[quote]$8 is a really shitty tip

What if the order was only 20 bucks? That's a 40% tip.

by Anonymousreply 96January 6, 2021 3:10 AM

It’s not his fault she got lost for 40 minutes. Women drivers, yeesh.

by Anonymousreply 97January 6, 2021 3:35 AM

Your goods cost $20. Service charge, convenience charge, tax etc: add another $10. Plus tip of $8. That's $38 for a $20 order: that is not a viable business model and will soon disappear along with said delivery drivers.

by Anonymousreply 98January 6, 2021 3:35 AM

I’m assuming she gets a flat rate per hour from the delivery service and most likely a mileage rate as well right? Anyone know what they are?

by Anonymousreply 99January 6, 2021 3:39 AM

[quote] But not everyone lives in Dumbfuckistan like you do

I may live in "Dumbfuckistan" but I love it here and have a much better way of life than I did in New York where I spent half my life. Bonus, I'm no longer surrounded by sneering cunts like you. So please do stay in the cities and continue to fly over us. We don't want your kind near us.

by Anonymousreply 100January 6, 2021 11:06 AM

This is why I cook.

by Anonymousreply 101January 6, 2021 11:15 AM

You Americans are so weird with the tipping thing. You have a boss. If you think you are not payed enough, go talk to your boss, don't expect others to give you your paycheck.

by Anonymousreply 102January 6, 2021 11:15 AM

I fucking loath people who nickel and dime those on the lowest work rung! My food deliveries are always within a 4 block radius. I always tip $10.

by Anonymousreply 103January 6, 2021 11:21 AM

R102 the delivery folk are usually self-employed.

by Anonymousreply 104January 6, 2021 11:28 AM

R104 So the restaurant doesn't pay her anything? I don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 105January 6, 2021 11:31 AM

Are you FUCKING kidding me with this? Bitch, you gonna give me the food that ordered.

by Anonymousreply 106January 6, 2021 11:35 AM

The restaurant almost certainly pays her nothing at all R105.

by Anonymousreply 107January 6, 2021 11:35 AM

R107 I don't believe that. So the only money she makes is from tips?

by Anonymousreply 108January 6, 2021 11:38 AM

I would have ran after her, tackled her and said, "That's the food I just ordered and paid for". Then I'd never order from them again and trash them- and her- all over the internet.

Things are different here in Flyoverland.

by Anonymousreply 109January 6, 2021 11:48 AM

She should’ve been tipped 10c

by Anonymousreply 110January 6, 2021 11:48 AM

This video is sad because it makes me think of so many people who are under-employed. It must be hard to live at the economic margins and rely on apps like doordash, grubhub, etc. to get by financially. It seems like a rough, demoralizing way to earn a meager wage. I usually overtip drivers in this situation because I feed bad for them. This gal, less so. She might come from a culture of haggling and negotiation, and that’s a rough start in life. We might see more people trapped in shitty economic conditions in the gig economy.

by Anonymousreply 111January 6, 2021 11:52 AM

R108 she's a freelance delivery person, using her own car, contracted on an ad hoc basis by DoorDash or PostMates or some such. I assume she gets a basic fee from DoorDash. She has no contractual relationship with the restaurant. So the tip is a big deal and heavy traffic slows her down. I don't know what precious fare she was carrying in that rather small bag but if it was worth $40 then the $8 tip is 20% which may or may not leave her any profit.

by Anonymousreply 112January 6, 2021 11:53 AM

How about the people make a fucking sandwich and then you don't have to worry about any of this. Lazy idiots with too much money ordering the Typhoid Mary special don't get much sympathy from me.

by Anonymousreply 113January 6, 2021 11:53 AM

Has she been cancelled yet?

by Anonymousreply 114January 6, 2021 11:54 AM

This is why tipping culture is bullshit. It pits the low wage worker against the customer leaving the employer off the hook for paying starvation wages. This bullshit needs to end.

by Anonymousreply 115January 6, 2021 11:57 AM

R111 What makes you think the customer is any better off than she is? He paid for the food (probably his one splurge of the week) and then the cunt runs off with it. I'm sure her boss was thrilled. Did the boss send someone else to deliver this customer the food that he fucking well paid for? This cunt is a straight up thief.

by Anonymousreply 116January 6, 2021 11:58 AM

Before now I have never ever heard of anyone trying to negotiate an increased tip.

by Anonymousreply 117January 6, 2021 11:58 AM

A tip is SUPPOSED to be optional. It has morphed into another fee that pays what should be WAGES from the employer.

by Anonymousreply 118January 6, 2021 12:01 PM

She didn't have to accept the gig if it was too far.

by Anonymousreply 119January 6, 2021 12:01 PM

I have a relative who was chased down in the parking lot by an unhappy waiter, R117. Somewhere expensive in Atlanta. It happens.

by Anonymousreply 120January 6, 2021 12:01 PM

I tip differently based on what salary the employee gets (restaurants pay delivery drivers Federal minimum plus tips while wait staff get State minimum of $2.75 plus tips) and the cost of the food. More for people who do grocery shopping for me versus those who just drop the order off.

That said, on this order a 20% tip of $8 would have been food that amounted to $40, and that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. Our own delivery orders are rarely ever as much as $40, but no one spends more than 20 minutes on the road both to and from our house, it's not a large city. If I knew that the delivery driver would have to spend more than 30 minutes total on the road and they were third party, therefore not getting a wage from a restaurant on top of their tip, I'd have paid more.

I would not under any circumstances have put up with a delivery driver stealing back the food I'd paid for.

by Anonymousreply 121January 6, 2021 12:01 PM

With her hustle she should be at the UN, not Grubhub.

by Anonymousreply 122January 6, 2021 12:02 PM

R116 People are saying she has no boss and is self-employed

by Anonymousreply 123January 6, 2021 12:05 PM

R121 many deliverers and shoppers are self-employed so min wage is not an issue.

by Anonymousreply 124January 6, 2021 12:08 PM

Who gives a shit, R123? All that matters is that the customer paid for that food which the cunt ran off with it so now the restaurant has to make the food all over again and send someone else to deliver the fucking food. And this bitch is no doubt out of a job (self-employed or not) especially now that this video is out there.

by Anonymousreply 125January 6, 2021 12:09 PM

R105, my understanding is that places like Door Dash offer something like $3 per delivery, plus you get the tip.

I found this out when a Hy-Vee delivery driver started yelling at me about not leaving tip. We had no option to leave a tip when we paid for the order, and when I'd called weeks earlier, I was told they were all Hy-Vee employees so they got their hourly wage, and employees couldn't take tips. Turned out they were actually third-party Door Dashers and got, I think, $3.17 per delivery plus whatever tip we left. I started leaving cash in an envelope at that point.

I'm sure this delivery driver had been through plenty of crap herself, and I sympathize, but not to the point of stealing someone's food out of spite.

Oh, dear!

by Anonymousreply 127January 6, 2021 12:13 PM

[quote] Turned out they were actually third-party Door Dashers and got, I think, $3.17 per delivery

And the $3.17 is directly charged to you as a service or delivery fee when you order and before you tip.

by Anonymousreply 128January 6, 2021 12:17 PM

If I lived in America, I'd avoid eating out or ordering in, your militant view on tipping is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 129January 6, 2021 12:32 PM

In her section of the economy others will deliver for an $8 tip. Sounds like she learned a lesson about how much her labor is worth.

by Anonymousreply 130January 6, 2021 12:39 PM

I must make sure to tip my shopper more generously than I tip the deliverer.

by Anonymousreply 131January 6, 2021 12:42 PM

Since when is an $8 tip bad?

If the bill is $40...$8 tip is 20%

If the bill is $54...$8 tip is 15%

Delivery apps, like DoorDash, recommend 3 options 15%, 20% and 25%

So unless this was a huge order, $8 is appropriate.

DLers are so out of touch...and can't do math.

by Anonymousreply 132January 6, 2021 12:53 PM

I can't stand the fact that every local establishment I go to now has a TIP jar on the counter- My health food store and my bakery. Why don't these places pay their employees a living wage. This TIPPING shit is out of control.

by Anonymousreply 133January 6, 2021 12:54 PM

It was a small bag so I assume it was not groceries but food from a restaurant.

by Anonymousreply 134January 6, 2021 1:12 PM

I thought tips in America are supposed to be 10% of the price you are paying. Now you are telling me they jumped up to 30%?

by Anonymousreply 135January 6, 2021 2:03 PM

I don't know what service it was, grub hub or uber eats or what. The drivers get paid for their time etc. Typically with Uber or Lyft you don't rate or tip until after you are dropped off. WHy would she know how much her tip was before she delivered the food?

by Anonymousreply 136January 6, 2021 4:37 PM

R136 Food delivery is different from Uber/Lyft.

Tips are shown so that drivers can choose if an order is worth their while.

by Anonymousreply 137January 6, 2021 4:46 PM

I don’t know how true this is but someone posted upthread she made the delivery and didn’t leave until the tip came through.

by Anonymousreply 138January 6, 2021 4:46 PM

[quote] DLers are so out of touch...and can't do math.

I was told there’d be no math.

That’s why I’m here.

by Anonymousreply 139January 6, 2021 4:47 PM

It was her decision to keep doing the job.

Tips are optional and provided voluntarily.

She has no right to expect anything.

She's a thief.

She can be grateful for any tip and smile land be nice and deliver her food like she's told or she can get a new job.

by Anonymousreply 140January 6, 2021 4:53 PM

^^^^^ So let it be written, so let it be done!

by Anonymousreply 141January 6, 2021 4:55 PM

[quote] Tips are shown so that drivers can choose if an order is worth their while.

So the tip was worth her while then but not now because she decided to spend 40 minutes on a trip that should have taken 10.

by Anonymousreply 142January 6, 2021 4:56 PM

A tip is optional. Always optional. Otherwise call it a mandatory fee. Or price the cost in. You may be an asshole for deliberately refusing a tip out of spite, but any kind hearted service worker I know, while highly desiring and often needing their tips for anything resembling a living wage, understand that others need services too - even poor ones that strain their budget greatly if they have to tip, but need to use a tipping-involved service at some point.

If you're chased down the parking lot by an angry server for leaving an inadequite or no tip, that's not your problem. You DO have a problem, but the problem isn't one requiring you to tip when you've decided not to. The wrong is being done by the server for harassing customers, and the problem itself is, if anything, with the restaurant owner refusing to pay to the level that would better avoid servers snapping and harassing customers. When you invest into tip culture, you get the good AND the bad.

No one should feel the need to tip 30%, 40%+. Ever. Supposed new 'standard' is 20% instead of 15% or 18%, but every increase is a systemic failure. Every increase is an indication that we do not pay service workers enough, and profits (acknowledging that there are hot-and-cold industries, especially restaurants) are filtering too much to owners and not enough to workers. They're pushing the costs to the customer, which isn't always an evil, but is probably too much, and they're not being up-front about it.

by Anonymousreply 143January 6, 2021 4:58 PM

She should have taken that $8 and bought some Bitcoin, and now she'd have more than $8.

by Anonymousreply 144January 6, 2021 4:58 PM

The trip should have taken ten minutes. What was she doing that she took forty minutes? Did she stop to take a shit? Do her grocery shopping? Get an abortion?

by Anonymousreply 145January 6, 2021 5:00 PM

So won't she have the cost of the meal deducted from her pay? Neither the restaurant nor the customer should have to pay for the wasted food.

by Anonymousreply 146January 6, 2021 5:04 PM

R143 here

Also, at least some food delivery services pay into what would be a 'tip' if the tip is absent or too low. The catch being that it replaces what a customer tips, and doesn't add on top. If more customers knew this, they're realize that by not tipping, the company is actually paying what they should have paid anyway. So when you tip for these (like Doordash?), the dashers don't even know what you tipped, so like, don't tip or don't give a small tip - only tip if its a rather large one. Because dashers get the money they should get anyway. Again, the companies are offloading to customers the proper pay for their delivery drivers. If we en-masse decided to not tip sit-in restaurants there would be months of struggle and propaganda to get us to revert, but then they would actually raise their pay averages. Whether that increase would be enough is another matter - high end places serving alcohol and hosting weddings would probably have disgruntled staff because they can rake in $100s on great days, but low end diners would have staff sighing in relief because they relied on good tip days to even survive, if they even manage that.

by Anonymousreply 147January 6, 2021 5:04 PM

Fake

by Anonymousreply 148January 6, 2021 5:06 PM

Hmm, I had a Dasher who definitely knew I hadn't left a tip, which I hadn't, because the option wasn't available on the grocery store's website. Sometimes they DO know what they've been tipped beforehand.

by Anonymousreply 149January 6, 2021 5:06 PM

Honest question, but is an $8 tip bad? I usually tip like, $5 on these apps. It's a crap shoot and you have to do it in advance. I won't tip MORE than $8. Is that cheap? I always tip servers well, bartenders, hotel housekeeping, valet, concierge, tour guides, etc. Am I wrong here?

The old days were better, because I could tip on the receipt once delivered and feel generous in the moment and based on the actual service. Or if they're cute. ^_^

Instead now I tip up front and sometimes it's shit and other times it's great. No adjustment.

by Anonymousreply 150January 6, 2021 5:22 PM

[quote] It seems like a rough, demoralizing way to earn a meager wage.

Oh come on R111. Someone can do that job in their pajamas. No, it's not tons of money but it affords you plenty of flexibility and it's also not meant to be a primary source of income.

Jesus fucking Christ there is an entire big world out there full of human beings that do legitimately demoralizing, rough jobs for PENNIES. Kids hocking fruits and vegetables on the sides of roads. In the Philippines we took a Grab (their Uber) that - due to REAL traffic unlike this cunt - took 1.5 hours for 15 miles. We were quoted about 750PHP for the ride ($15) and there the quote is locked in when you order the call and you pay CASH after so it's not even guaranteed for them.

We tipped 1,000PHP ($20) on top of that fare because it's an obscene time and distance. The driver looked at us like we were angels from heaven and kept saying god bless you. THOSE are people who struggle. No welfare, no stimulus, high risk, and long hours.

This cunt can take her $8 tip and fuck herself 50 ways from Sunday.

by Anonymousreply 151January 6, 2021 5:37 PM

That bag she carried away was small and she never once said "your order was 200 dollars, why are you tipping me 8" she just complained about the distance. She drove 12 miles and was demanding more than 8 dollars for her time...time she was already being compensated for. She even said it took her 40 minutes to drive it. Okay so she has decided in addition to her pay for delivery she should get more than 12 dollars an hour for driving. Bitch it is a tip. I decide how much to give you ON TOP of what I paid.

by Anonymousreply 152January 6, 2021 5:56 PM

I would hate to visit USA. I wouldn't know who should be tipped and who not. And how much. And all the weird taxes that differ from state to state and aren't listed on the price tag. Such a confusing country

by Anonymousreply 153January 6, 2021 5:59 PM

R135 many DLers seem to overtip and think you should be paying 30% on the tax also.

by Anonymousreply 154January 6, 2021 6:18 PM

They should have called the cops immediately when she started ranting. Keep her at the door debating the issue while the police walk up behind her. Then grab the bag as she screams and resists arrest saying, "There's your tip, BITCH!".

by Anonymousreply 155January 6, 2021 6:23 PM

And what exactly would the police do? What would you even tell them is the reason you are calling them?

by Anonymousreply 156January 6, 2021 6:44 PM

r152 I have UK friends who (when we could travel) would come travel with us in the US. They just looked to me to tell them what to tip - and every time i tried to explain the concept they would say "why not just pay them more and put the cost to the customer."

by Anonymousreply 157January 6, 2021 6:44 PM

As someone who has door dashed to supplement my income $8 is a pretty good tip on top of your share.

by Anonymousreply 158January 6, 2021 6:49 PM

I always tip $0

by Anonymousreply 159January 6, 2021 6:57 PM

R159 must be British.

by Anonymousreply 160January 6, 2021 7:13 PM

When you give a tip, remember it may also have to cover the 10 or 15 minutes the delivery guy takes to 'process' your ID in the event of booze in your order.

I got a food and booze delivery today via some guy who didn't speak much English. He didn't know what the fuck he was doing, couldn't operate his system. Told me several times my ID was "NO GOOD!" He phoned his boss in Ouagadougou with whom he spoke in tongues; together they couldn't work it out. He took several pics of said ID; then took a written note of said ID - I wouldn't be surprised if they attempt to hack my ID as a result. He didn't complain about the $9 (15%) tip, barely acknowledged it actually - captured ID is their reward it seems. I would complain but given the times we live in, won't be complaining unless I find any probs with my ID. The driver was delivering, as a third party, for a multinational household name supplier in which I am a shareholder, for now (until I sell my stock).

by Anonymousreply 161January 7, 2021 11:58 PM

I trust you Emily a food taster, R159.

by Anonymousreply 162January 8, 2021 12:04 AM

Emily a food taster?

by Anonymousreply 163January 8, 2021 12:07 AM

Grubhub in CA pays 16/hr(looks like13 in NY). They also pay their employees 1.50 per delivery. If you did your job well and didn't get lost you could probably make 2 deliveries an hour. With an $8 tip plus the 1.50 times two plus hourly wage that's $30-36/hr. I was a librarian in SF in 2017 and that's about what I made! Delivery driver is an awful job and I wouldn't want it but with some hustle in the right area, you could make bank.

by Anonymousreply 164January 8, 2021 12:11 AM

[quote] $30-36/hr. I was a librarian in SF in 2017 and that's about what I made!

For a short while, to fill a gap in my budget, I was a temp contract lawyer and made $50 per hour. There was no proof-reading: I was expected to conduct the cases with gusto (which I did) and appear in court. I would not do overtime and got my $350 per day. I was well-beloved by the firm (at $50 per hour) and they asked me to stay on a salary (no overtime, natch) but I had better things to do. But I was glad of the money at the time. Also some of the work was outside my beaten path so I learnt some stuff on the job: there is, regrettably, not much professional learning on food delivery (I imagine).

If ever I have to go back to the gig economy, I will do food delivery: much easier than worrying about what the judge is going to think and fighting with my (no so learned) opponent for $50 ph.
