What a wonderful sight.
Wild Animals Use Bridge Built Especially For Them To Cross Busy Highway

Thanks for pointing this out, OP. I'm passionate about this sort of thing. Things are getting better but very very slowly.

A dollface thread. ALERT!

I take Lyft and Uber everywhere and no longer drive because I can't stand to see roadkilled animals. I get so sad. I keep my head down and read in the back seat.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 5, 2021 2:07 PM |
I’ll bet they enjoy the soothing music too.

I know I do, Wahboat.

Do the predators wait for them at the end of the bridge?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 5, 2021 2:26 PM |
Because animals have had SUCH incredible hardship making their way from continent to continent since the dawn of time . . .
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 5, 2021 2:38 PM |
I fucking hate squirrels
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 5, 2021 2:39 PM |
R7, think of it as a building project for stimulus. And it saves drivers' lives (people hit deer, skid off the road, and die.
R8, you're a sociopath. Good for you: you get to be incredibly wealthy.

Needs a toll booth.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 5, 2021 2:49 PM |
So that’s what that new skybridge over I-80 is!
I didn’t even know we had moose and porcupines in Utah.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 5, 2021 2:53 PM |
Would not it have been less expensive to just arrange a car service?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 5, 2021 2:55 PM |
And..? Is this new to you? Wildlife crossing are mandatory when they build new highways here in Norway.

I did notice what looked like a coyote coming across at night carrying some sort of small creature in its mouth.

R9 I was going to be wealthy, but squirrels have ripped holes into every home I’ve owned to build nests in the attic. Removing them and repairing the damage was pretty expensive, so now I’m destitute.

R13, I do not know if this is the first one in the USA. It is the first bridge that I have heard of. In North Carolina there is at least one passageway that goes under a highway.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 5, 2021 4:17 PM |
But...but...where am I gonna get my meat from now? Roadkill keeps ma family alive...
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 5, 2021 5:28 PM |
A bad time to post about 5 million being spent on roadkill when the government can only provide $600 bucks to people who haven't worked all year
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 5, 2021 5:36 PM |
Forget about roadkill a minute. Think about the human lives saved by not hitting deer or other large mammals on the highway.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 5, 2021 7:18 PM |
Yup. A local politician was driving up north to the wilderness, hit a moose and is now quadriplegic.

The Davis (CA) Toad Tunnel was built 25 years ago.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 5, 2021 7:41 PM |
Evie and I are crossing it tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 5, 2021 7:45 PM |
I had to get out of my car to stop a fucking redneck in his lifted douche truck the other day when he went to pass everybody that was stopped to let some ducklings and their mom across at a posted crossing.
To his credit, he did act embarrassed.

They're going to build one in LA to help wildlife (coyotes, mountain lions, bobcats, etc.) cross over the 101 Freeway.

[bold]With a New Land Bridge, San Antonio Provides a Safe Passage for People and Wildlife[/bold]
Over the years, Phil Hardberger Park in San Antonio has welcomed visitors from across the city and beyond. But there was always a glaring obstacle splitting it into two parts: Wurzbach Parkway. Now, with the addition of a land bridge, locals, visitors, and even wildlife have a new reason to appreciate this natural sanctuary in the heart of the city.
Last month, the long-awaited Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge opened in north-central San Antonio, officially becoming the largest wildlife crossing constructed in the United States. The bridge is 150 feet long by 150 feet wide and stretches high over Wurzbach Parkway, unifying both sides of the previously divided park.
“People who are regular visitors are all of a sudden discovering there is another side of the park,” says Denise Gross, the executive director at the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy. “To reclaim that was really important.”

It's all fun and games until one of them eats the other on the land bridge.

Don't be such a smug cunt, little Miss Norway.
We can't all be so perfect as you are.

It’s providing construction jobs. Union jobs. Money circulates. Drivers and animals are saved.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 5, 2021 9:42 PM |
God bless everyone involved in making these.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 5, 2021 9:49 PM |
How the fuck do they know how to use a bridge?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 5, 2021 10:00 PM |
lol R32.
It's a fair question.
Animals ARE pretty stupid.
That said, the bridge is at the same level as the land they are traversing, so at the very least, they won't have to go downhill to the busy interstate.
They're probably smart enough to know not to walk into speeding traffic. Most of them are, any way.
The rest end up as road kill.
Oh, and they're probably also following a scent trail that leads them to the bridge.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 5, 2021 10:05 PM |
The animals find the bridge little by little. Then more animals follow the ones who already know about it, and eventually the animals far and wide learn if they want to cross over that freeway they must walk to that place. Animals are not as dumb as you think.

I want meandering junkie bridges. We already have people who cross streets like stop-action bishops on a chessboard. Give me bridges with a random barrel of junk on them.

In Massachusetts, our Berkshire animals have traffic signals.

I saw birds on that bridge, which is just lazy.

This was very sweet. I didn't realize that all those species were roaming right outside Salt Lake City.
