Actresses who should have been nominated for an Oscar
This is not a thread about who should have won. I want to discuss all those actresses (only women, I am that gay) who deserved an Oscar nomination but didn’t get it. It doesn’t matter if they wouldn’t have won that year, just being nominated. I have a few, ordered by personal opinion about the level of the performance:
1. Kirsten Dunst for “Melancholia”.
2. Jennifer Aniston for “Cake”.
3. Jennifer Lopez for “Hustlers”.
4. Meg Ryan for “When Harry met Sally”.
5. Robin Wright for “Forrest Gump”.

Well there are some every year. In your 2011 I’d also put up Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene for the best actress dong.

Why does everyone pretend J-Lo's turn in "Hustlers" was some kind of tour de force?
Her performance was passable, nothing more. And the movie itself was just your run of the mill crime drama, except with a bunch of evil cunts instead of evil dicks.

R2 - Olsen was jaw-dropping in that film. Loved both it and her as an actress (despite her obnoxious siblings). I'm saddened that she has mostly starred in comic book crap since. I do get the big paycheck as a motivation, but Olsen is such a promising actress IMO; I hope that she gets involved with more exciting projects in the future.

JLo's best role was in "Out of Sight", this was before she became JLo. She and Clooney has a Lauren Bacall/Humphrey Bogart steamy chemistry going. IMO she ruined her acting career by being an untalented singer. She could have been an acclaimed actress if she continued in that vein but instead for for the easy money. On second thought maybe not since she constantly needs to be in the public eye with cringe worthy pap shots.

Any time Aniston is mentioned for 'Cake', I think of the story about her being so sure she'd be nominated that she rented out a hotel suite in Beverly Hills for the nomination celebration. I wouldn't even think Meryl would be presumptuous enough to jinx a nomination like that, but Aniston had been assured by her people that she was getting nominated and wanted to celebrate, dammit.
One I'll throw in for this year, since she's not getting any traction for a nomination (although she was amazing): Eva Noblezada in 'Yellow Rose'. A great Filipina-led film featuring Filipina actors and directed by a Filipina. We need more films with representation like this one.

Ingrid Bergman for Notorious. It might have been her best Hollywood golden age performance, but she was not nominated that year during a stretch where she was almost a perennial nominee.

I think her biggest mistake was turning down silence of the lambs I can imagine she would have been stand out in that film. It’s about the best role she could have played.
I can see her having a lot of success in a series now a la Glenn close and reese witherspoon if she could find the right material.

It's a cliche by now, but yes Dunaway should've got a nom for MD.
But I also think Puzzle of a Downfall Child in 1970. She got the Globe nomination and could've easily taken Janet Suzman's spot or even Carrie Snodgress in Mad Housewife (even though I love that performance).
Faye gives a tour de force as Lou Andreas Sand (Emily). She really should've taken McGraw's spot, but Love Story was such a juggernaut it didn't matter that Ali's performance was mediocre.
IF this trailer (made by fan) was out back then she would have gotten the nom! haha!
FANTASTIC TRAILER with Oscar written all over it.

[quote]Julie Christie wasn't in Nashville
I think r126 was joking. She was indeed in Nashville, for about 30 seconds playing herself.

Mimi Rogers for "The Rapture",
Geraldine Chaplin for supporting, as her own mentally ill grandmother in "Chaplin",
Renee Taylor for "Made For Each Other", a very obscure movie, but Taylor gave a great comic performance.

Parker Posey in Henry Fool. Such a unique actress and I think in this film she was able to be her most but reels back before pushed into caricature.

Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally isn't totally off base. She was widely considered a sure thing at the time. It was actually a surprise she was passed over for Pauline Collins. It's a great romantic comedy performance. Julia Roberts was also largely expected to be nominated for My Best Friend's Wedding and also deserved it for a really anti romantic comedy performance. Both are great female comedic performances reminiscent of old screwball comedies of the Golden Age.

I never imagined that Kate Winslet in Titanic, Julie Christie in Afterglow and Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets would be nominated over Jodie Foster in Contact and Roberts in MBFW

One can start very early. 1928. Lillian Gish for The Wind, one of the greatest performances ever, but by the time of the nominations, silent films were passé, so they went with the disastrous, yet talking, Mary Pickford.
