Actresses who should have been nominated for an Oscar

This is not a thread about who should have won. I want to discuss all those actresses (only women, I am that gay) who deserved an Oscar nomination but didn’t get it. It doesn’t matter if they wouldn’t have won that year, just being nominated. I have a few, ordered by personal opinion about the level of the performance:

1. Kirsten Dunst for “Melancholia”.

2. Jennifer Aniston for “Cake”.

3. Jennifer Lopez for “Hustlers”.

4. Meg Ryan for “When Harry met Sally”.

5. Robin Wright for “Forrest Gump”.

by Anonymousreply 165August 10, 2021 9:08 AM

Yikes at your #2-5

by Anonymousreply 1January 3, 2021 11:29 AM

Well there are some every year. In your 2011 I’d also put up Elizabeth Olsen in Martha Marcy May Marlene for the best actress dong.

by Anonymousreply 2January 3, 2021 11:33 AM

Why does everyone pretend J-Lo's turn in "Hustlers" was some kind of tour de force?

Her performance was passable, nothing more. And the movie itself was just your run of the mill crime drama, except with a bunch of evil cunts instead of evil dicks.

by Anonymousreply 3January 3, 2021 11:33 AM

Mia Farrow for “Rosemary’s baby”

by Anonymousreply 4January 3, 2021 11:36 AM

R4 And for The Purple Rose of Cairo, Broadway Danny Rose & Alice.

by Anonymousreply 5January 3, 2021 11:39 AM

Kathy Bates for Best Actress and Judy Parfitt for Best Supporting in DOLORES CLAIBORNE.

by Anonymousreply 6January 3, 2021 11:47 AM

R1 Jennifer Aniston was actually pretty good at “Cake” and she deserved that nod.

by Anonymousreply 7January 3, 2021 11:47 AM

Judy Parfitt for Dolores Claiborne (Supporting)

Tori Spelling for Trick (Supporting) - her For Your Consideration clip would be the New Jersey/cheese on fries diner breakdown

Hugh Grant - Paddington 2 (Supporting - included here because he played a nun)

Julianne Moore - Magnolia (Supporting)

Meryl Streep - Marvin's Room (Lead)

Gwen Verdon - Marvin's Room (Supporting)

Marion Cotillard - A Very Long Engagement (Supporting)

Audrey Tautou - Amelie (Lead)

Jodie Foster - Inside Man (Supporting)

Sarah Polley - Go (Supporting)

by Anonymousreply 8January 3, 2021 11:48 AM

Reese Whiterspoon for “Election”.

by Anonymousreply 9January 3, 2021 11:48 AM

Björk - Dancer in the Dark

by Anonymousreply 10January 3, 2021 11:51 AM

R2 - Olsen was jaw-dropping in that film. Loved both it and her as an actress (despite her obnoxious siblings). I'm saddened that she has mostly starred in comic book crap since. I do get the big paycheck as a motivation, but Olsen is such a promising actress IMO; I hope that she gets involved with more exciting projects in the future.

by Anonymousreply 11January 3, 2021 11:52 AM

I know it sounds like a joke but Rachel McAdams for “Mean Girls”. Time has proven she was iconic.

by Anonymousreply 12January 3, 2021 11:52 AM

Co-sign Dunst in Melancholia, Bjork in Dancer in the Dark and Elizabeth Olsen in MMMM

by Anonymousreply 13January 3, 2021 12:03 PM

Veronica Cartwright for THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK

Mercedes Ruehl for MARRIED TO THE MOB

Both should have easily been nominated for supporting. They stole every scene they were in.

by Anonymousreply 14January 3, 2021 12:43 PM

I watched "Age of Innocence" yesterday and it is shocking that Michelle Pfeiffer did not get a nod.

by Anonymousreply 15January 3, 2021 12:49 PM

Gong Li in both Ju Dou and Coming Home

Sophia Loren for A Special Day

Hanna Schygulla for The Marriage of Maria Braun

Rosel Zech for Veronica Voss

by Anonymousreply 16January 3, 2021 1:26 PM

^^^^ actually means Alicia Silverstone in Clueless

by Anonymousreply 17January 3, 2021 1:36 PM

^^^^ the only one who deserved an Oscar nomination in Clueless was Paul Rudd - for being so pretty.

by Anonymousreply 18January 3, 2021 1:40 PM

JLo's best role was in "Out of Sight", this was before she became JLo. She and Clooney has a Lauren Bacall/Humphrey Bogart steamy chemistry going. IMO she ruined her acting career by being an untalented singer. She could have been an acclaimed actress if she continued in that vein but instead for for the easy money. On second thought maybe not since she constantly needs to be in the public eye with cringe worthy pap shots.

Any time Aniston is mentioned for 'Cake', I think of the story about her being so sure she'd be nominated that she rented out a hotel suite in Beverly Hills for the nomination celebration. I wouldn't even think Meryl would be presumptuous enough to jinx a nomination like that, but Aniston had been assured by her people that she was getting nominated and wanted to celebrate, dammit.

One I'll throw in for this year, since she's not getting any traction for a nomination (although she was amazing): Eva Noblezada in 'Yellow Rose'. A great Filipina-led film featuring Filipina actors and directed by a Filipina. We need more films with representation like this one.

So many great ones! Now that superhero movies can also be Oscar winners - Michelle for Batman Returns! Comedies finally starting to get their due and so many performances skipped - young adults, opposite of sex, clueless, and Carol B in Annie!

by Anonymousreply 69January 3, 2021 11:21 PM

Ingrid Bergman for Notorious. It might have been her best Hollywood golden age performance, but she was not nominated that year during a stretch where she was almost a perennial nominee.

I am assuming this one has been mentioned, Cher for Mask.

Have occasionally wondered if Nicole should have been nominated for the Others instead of Moulin Rouge - although her win the following year for the Hours was probably in part due to both of those movies

by Anonymousreply 70January 3, 2021 11:53 PM

Elizabeth Berkeley for Showgirls. The role was far more complex than people think!

by Anonymousreply 71January 3, 2021 11:58 PM

Alison Pill - Milk and Pieces of April.

Thandie Newton - Crash.

Most underserved nomination: Anna Kendrick for Up in the Air. WTF?

by Anonymousreply 77January 4, 2021 1:57 AM

Jennifer Aniston was nothing spoecial in Cake. Thankfully people saw through that PR campaign that cost her a fortune. If Aniston had been smart she would have also pushed Adriana Barraza who was actually much more deserving of a nod. That might have garnered her some good will.

by Anonymousreply 78January 4, 2021 2:11 AM

Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady

by Anonymousreply 79January 4, 2021 2:12 AM

I thought Aniston was better in The Good Girl where she also gave the Cake performance.

by Anonymousreply 80January 4, 2021 4:05 AM

Rosalind Russell for The Women. One of the funniest supporting performances ever.

Beverly D'Angelo for Coal Miner's Daughter. She did her own singing and did a great job capturing the Patsy Cline's charisma (and throw in a supporting actor nom for Tommy Lee Jones, too).

Kathy Bates for Dolores Claiborne. An even better performance than Misery, and she was great in Misery.

Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right. She was better than Bening, who was nominated.

I love Michelle pFeiffer she seems like a lovely woman too, but I don’t get this constant Oscar buzz every time she has a come back. I think her boat has sailed. As much as I like her, I don’t think she’s ever given that strong a performance. I enjoyed her presence in film but that’s it.

I think her biggest mistake was turning down silence of the lambs I can imagine she would have been stand out in that film. It’s about the best role she could have played.

I can see her having a lot of success in a series now a la Glenn close and reese witherspoon if she could find the right material.

Kylie Minogue - Streetfighter

by Anonymousreply 108March 19, 2021 8:34 AM

It's a cliche by now, but yes Dunaway should've got a nom for MD.

But I also think Puzzle of a Downfall Child in 1970. She got the Globe nomination and could've easily taken Janet Suzman's spot or even Carrie Snodgress in Mad Housewife (even though I love that performance).

Faye gives a tour de force as Lou Andreas Sand (Emily). She really should've taken McGraw's spot, but Love Story was such a juggernaut it didn't matter that Ali's performance was mediocre.

IF this trailer (made by fan) was out back then she would have gotten the nom! haha!

FANTASTIC TRAILER with Oscar written all over it.

Has anyone mentioned Faye Dunaway for "Barfly"?

by Anonymousreply 110March 19, 2021 8:55 AM

That same year she had a critically acclaimed supporting performance in Little Big Man.

I always thought she would've gotten a supporting that year.

She's hilarious as Mrs. Pendrake. When Dustin Hoffman discovers her years later in a brothel I love how she says: "This life is not only wicked and sinful, it isn't even any fun! Sure, if I could come here once or twice a week, but EVERY NIGHT!"

Mimi Rogers for "The Rapture",

Geraldine Chaplin for supporting, as her own mentally ill grandmother in "Chaplin",

Renee Taylor for "Made For Each Other", a very obscure movie, but Taylor gave a great comic performance.

Parker Posey in Henry Fool. Such a unique actress and I think in this film she was able to be her most but reels back before pushed into caricature.

Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally isn't totally off base. She was widely considered a sure thing at the time. It was actually a surprise she was passed over for Pauline Collins. It's a great romantic comedy performance. Julia Roberts was also largely expected to be nominated for My Best Friend's Wedding and also deserved it for a really anti romantic comedy performance. Both are great female comedic performances reminiscent of old screwball comedies of the Golden Age.

I never imagined that Kate Winslet in Titanic, Julie Christie in Afterglow and Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets would be nominated over Jodie Foster in Contact and Roberts in MBFW

One can start very early. 1928. Lillian Gish for The Wind, one of the greatest performances ever, but by the time of the nominations, silent films were passé, so they went with the disastrous, yet talking, Mary Pickford.

Joan Crawford for A Woman's Face
