Actually, I grew up with them, but I'm still baffled.
Eldergays: Please explain the appeal of Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine

They were lousy and we were deluded.

The rhythm got us

Miami Vice made Miami the cutting edge of cool in the mid 80's, when the group hit it big with Conga. They were a popular club band for their first couple of albums before going into the Pop/Adult Contemporary Route.
Gloria was also a smoking hot sex symbol in the mid to late 80's in the Latino community.

I would hardly look at Gloria Estefan and call her a smoking hot sex symbol.

Gloria and Emilio are good people. Their daughter is a lesbian, and they are LGBTQ advocates.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 2, 2021 1:35 AM |
So what, R5? Their music sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 2, 2021 1:35 AM |
And now the only song she can get is the theme from [italic]One Day at a Time[/italic].

Please drop dead at your earliest convenience R6.

R5, There are lots of people who are gay advocates (I don't give a fuck about the alphabet soup bullshit), but I don't have to also listen to their shitty music.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 2, 2021 1:42 AM |
Now would be a good time R9
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 2, 2021 1:45 AM |
R8- the only living Gloria Estefan fan.
That bus should have rolled over a few more times.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 2, 2021 1:48 AM |
Emilio and Gloria are "good people"? Maybe Gloria is but I've heard Emilio is a piece of shit, who treated MSM like garbage.
It's telling that Rolling Stone (when it was still a decent mag) did a not-too-flattering story about the Estefans after the bus accident when Gloria was getting sympathy.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 2, 2021 1:52 AM |
What does "good people" even mean? Actions are good or bad. People are neutral until they speak or act.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 2, 2021 1:55 AM |
I like her romantic ballads (Words Get in the Way) more than the salsa music.
She was the first big latin star, and made (by producing and managing) the careers of many other latin singers--like Jon Secada, Shakira (in her first US album), and many others.

[quote] She was the first big latin star
Oh really?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 2, 2021 1:59 AM |
Gloria Estefan does a great live show. I like the music still.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 2, 2021 2:10 AM |
Gloria really was the first big Latin pop star. She begat Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, etc., and as someone upthread said, she helped jumpstart the US careers of Jon Secada and Shakira.

Exposé > Miami Sound Machine

She was a smoking hot sex symbol for sixty-somethjng cab drivers who wanked one off to women with big noses and unruly brows.

In other words, we have more to hate her for than just *her* shitty music.

Never liked them and can’t stand to hear them today
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 2, 2021 8:50 AM |
She/they had a few good songs but Gloria was bland and had no IT factor and didn't possess the looks for a sex symbol.
