What happened to her? She hit it big with her dark, moody, sad music and then vanished.
I used to love Angel and Fallen, though. She was talented.
Did you like any of her songs? I feel most DLers would probably roll their eyes at her music lmao

He early music instantly takes me right back to being a teenage nerd obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Those were the days!

Her dog ate her.

She now works as a landscaper in Portland.

I was obsessed with her until I discovered Tori Amos.
Surfacing was her best album and holds up really well.
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy has some great tracks.

The public lost interest in his miserable music

I still love her. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was the best album. She still performs and records songs, but she lost a lot of her songwriting edge and became more mug-cradley after she had kids.

Everyone was trashing Cyndi Lauper today because of her New Years Eve performance, but it made me think of this duet she did with Sarah which is great:

One of my faves... And I think Lilith Fair made her so rich she doesn't have to do anything anymore...

Hmmm

She was part of the "scene" when it comes to the music I was listening to in the late 90s, but I never actually paid attention to any of her songs, I don't think I could sing you one of her songs.. oh, did one of them go something like: "into the fiiiiiiiire" or something?
I remember reading Tori Amos saying once (maybe in her Piece by Piece book?) that Sarah was terrible with money or with looking after her best interests or something.

I especially loved "Building a Mystery." She's a local girl, born here in Halifax.

Her career went straight down the shitter is what happened.
Next question.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 22, 2021 7:48 PM |
She sold her soul for rock 'n' roll! "Let's look at this one!"
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 22, 2021 7:49 PM |
She really had one fabulous album - Fumbling Towards Ecstacy - and one pleasantly OK one - Surfacing.
The ones before were meh, and the ones after, while recorded with better instruments and equipment, are also meh.
But all her burners were firing for Fumbling. One of my all time favorites.

She used up all of her good ideas on Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, droned on with Surfacing, and eventually bored herself to death.
Sad

I love Fear.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 22, 2021 8:07 PM |
Fear and Fumbling Toward Ecstasy blew my mind live. The voice of an angel.

She probably made enough to happily retire in Canada and live a peaceful life. I always enjoyed that she used her crazy stalkers rantings in one of her songs.
I know she’s known for the sad dog commercials but her other somber ballads like “Answer” and “Angel” were lovely. She will always remind me of Felicity and being a teen in NYC in the 90s

I saw Sarah McLachlan when she toured Fumbling at the Paramount in Denver. Paula Cole opened for her and blew everyone away with her miked mask, pickle barrel, cookie sheet, and her cover of Jolene. Then Sarah came out and just stood there and sang. Paula left the tour shortly after I always assumed because she outshone the main attraction.

She's also a bit of a bookend to Sheryl Crow.
Good singers, talented enough, but they hit the heights because they had a good team and good producers to help them. As soon as those people left them, so did the hits.

That's this song, which is one of her best. I believe the stalker actually tried to sue her for plagiarizing from his love letters to her.

She really didn’t have a sound that translated well to different songs.

Reminds me of Roswell 👽

Didn’t she get divorced and turn lezzy?

"Fallen" is a beautiful song.

I associate her with this, didn't know the artist of the song is Paula Cole. Good that r20 mentioned she toured with Sarah McLachlan in her prime. Hadn't thought that there were no Sarah McLachlan Songs on Dawson's Creek, at least not in the soundtracks, nor I guess elsewhere.

For the Paula Cole fans, here’s a cool duet of Sarah’s song “Elsewhere”....

She toured the west coast a few years ago, just her, a guitar, and a piano. She told the story behind the inspiration for most of the songs she sang. She has treated her voice well and sounded fantastic.
