Do you think Alec Baldwin was/is jealous of Kim Basinger's Oscar

She was never really considered a "serious" actress, then she won an Oscar. I wonder if that made him jealous.

by Anonymousreply 22December 31, 2020 3:40 PM

Yes, of course it did. He was seething I’m sure.

by Anonymousreply 1December 31, 2020 1:40 PM

I think anybody would be angry about the fact that Kim Basinger has an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 2December 31, 2020 1:44 PM

Not if he saw the performance that supposedly warranted it.

Iconic 1989 Gap model, Kim Basinger?

That should have been Julianne Moore's Oscar.

Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 5December 31, 2020 1:45 PM

I think a normal human being walking down Central Park would piss off Alec Baldwin. That man has issues.

by Anonymousreply 6December 31, 2020 1:46 PM

I’m sure he rationaled somehow that it was “only” a supporting Oscar and in a “weak” year. But yeah, I’m sure it hurt his ego a bit.

by Anonymousreply 7December 31, 2020 1:47 PM

I’d be more upset about Alan Arkin’s Oscar.

There’s always going to be a lane in Hollywood for attractive who may not have much range but can give a completely believable performance, especially next to an intense male co-star. Cameron Diaz and Meghan Fox have made careers out of it.

R6 Someone on here once said "Alec Baldwin seems like the kind of guy who would throw soup cans on your bread if you ran into his cart at the supermarket."

I agree that Julianne Moore's performance was the most deserving of an Oscar, but Basinger is great in L.A. Confidential, so I never took issue with her winning.

Alec and Kim famously poked fun at Alec’s perceived jealousy on an episode of The Simpsons. The entire episode is hilarious, of course (Homer is hired as their assistant).

Since he was married to her, he was probably a fan of all facets of her including her acting talent. So he was probably thrilled for her.

But he wants his damn Oscar already.

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2020 1:58 PM

He got a pity nod for “The Cooler” in 2003.

by Anonymousreply 12December 31, 2020 2:04 PM

Overall, Alec is way more talented an actor than Kim. He can play a leading man, a heavy, light comedy, satire, he's got a pretty decent range. I haven't seen everything he's ever done, but I can't think of anything he's been really bad in.

His SNL version of Trump is probably the worst thing he's ever done as an actor, and it's not terrible...but I think it only kind of works because, essentially, he IS Trump.

Ever seen Kim in "Blind Date"? One of the worst, most awkward, least funny comedic performances I've ever seen. I don't see how the director watched the dailies and didn't immediately fire her and recast the role. It's memorably awful. She can be fine in the right vehicle, or a train wreck in the wrong one.

by Anonymousreply 13December 31, 2020 2:15 PM

Yeah, R13. I think I remember reading somewhere that Alec Baldwin demanded a recount for class president of his college, and lost again. He then transferred out of that college. A lot like Trump rn. Sore losers

Alec is great at playing the self-involved, ego-driven pompous male lead foil for a strong lead actress to play against. But I think he gets overlooked.

In my opinion, I would imagine he feels somewhat slighted or overlooked though. He's been a supporting actor in a couple of good movies as the oblivious self-important boyfriend / husband / partner to a strong lead female character. Alec seems to have a history of playing similar roles against women who go on to receive plenty of awards and commendations.

His co-star Melanie Griffith in WORKING GIRL was nominated for lead actress, but he didn't receive many accolades. His co-star Cate Blanchett won for BLUE JASMINE as lead actress, but Alec didn't really get much press attention. Alec's co-star Julianne Moore won for STILL ALICE as lead actress, but he was just a background character. He was in THE AVIATOR with Cate Blanchett and she received the awards. I think he was even in some movie with Geena Davis right before she won her Oscar.

R15 Beetlejuice was the movie. Alec has won three Emmys and can be great in the right vehicle. He’s doing a lot of paycheck parts currently to support his 109 kids with that imbecilic wife. If you look at Kim’s win on YouTube he seemed genuinely thrilled for her, not just camera thrilled, even though it was probably the least deserving win ever in that category. He seemed a tinged upset when he lost to Tim Robbins though.

by Anonymousreply 16December 31, 2020 2:22 PM

She's insinuated as much.

And I remember him being really pissed years later that Kim wasn't going to let him take Ireland to the Oscars when he got nominated for The Cooler because it didn't fall on his custody days. He lost anyway.

[quote]Alec is great at playing the self-involved, ego-driven pompous male lead

In other words, he's great at playing himself.

He's a toxic individual who got a pass because 1.) He's a man and 2.) Because of his politics. If he were a woman with that same history of odious behavior, he would have been labelled "difficult" a long time ago and he would not have had all the opportunities he has so generously received.

by Anonymousreply 18December 31, 2020 2:52 PM

That bitch stole my Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 19December 31, 2020 3:20 PM

Kim Basinger is the beating heart of L.A. Confidential as the woman with whom all the male characters are involved. She had just had her baby and looked, imo, a helluva lot better than that stick insect Hilaria. Basinger had a solid career and was iconic because of Nine and a Half Weeks, No Mercy, and Never Say Never Again.

Alec has never been much of an actor and now does commercials. Streaming talk show to come.

He's a lunatic, but I always enjoy him in his acting roles. Can't think of any role of his that disappointed me. Loved him in 30 Rock. Also loved that thriller with Nicole Kidman where he played a doctor. This scandal won't kill his career--might kill his marriage, but not his career.

by Anonymousreply 21December 31, 2020 3:36 PM

R21 What career? He's already been reduced to hosting a reboot of a game show.
