Was “Sugar Sugar” (1969) by The Archies the only song by an animated group to top the charts?
It went to number one in the USA for 4 weeks and in the UK for eight weeks. It went on to becoming the best selling single in the USA for the year 1969.
Has an animated fictional group ever had success like “The Archies”?
It really is a fun bubblegum pop song.

The real singers had to take on the name The Archies because of the songs success to perform it. I bet the lead singer hated it.
He was quite cute though.

The Alvin & Chipmunks Christmas song is the first that comes to mind.

Nope. The Gorillaz had several hits in the earlier 2000's. Animated group. Best song is "Feel Good, Inc".

The lead singer Ron Dante sort of specialized in being fictional groups. He sang “Tracy,” a song that was credited to The Cufflinks. and “Leader of the Laundromat” was released by The Detergents, and “You Deserve a Break Today” for McDonalds

OT but did anyone else have the Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits tribute CD?

But Gorillaz was an intentional virtual band.
Anyone know how Sugar, Sugar became popular? Did they have it on the show and decide to release it as a single?

" yes. And a song that still is played every Holiday season."
Actually, no. The music is not by an "animated group." It's by the great jazz musician Vince Guaraldi and other supporting musicians. The music isn't attributed to "The Peanuts Gang."

The Monkees, incredibly enough, turned down their chance to record "Sugar, Sugar." Don Kirshner, who knew a hit song when heard one, wanted them to do it but they supposedly were in a snit about not being able to record more of their own songs. Mickey Dolenz talked about it:
“As you know, Don Kirschner presented that as our next tune,” Dolenz said. “I was going to record it. That’s when Mike Nesmith led the palace revolt and we fought for the right to have at least some sort of control over the music. I didn’t go to the session – I’d gone to England, and that’s when I met the Beatles. Don Kirschner got fired, but then he recorded the song with the "Archies.” Kirschner joked the Archies wouldn’t talk back to him — after all, they were a cartoon band.
What a damn shame. Although Dolenz said he was going to do it, that song was made to be sung by Davy Jones. I always imagined him singing it in his smooth, teen idol voice, "Sugah...aw honey, honey. You are mah candee guuurl, and ya got me wantin' yooou...'

They didn’t release but a couple singles and they didn’t chart well. I got a Rhino release of their recordings like twenty years ago. Most was filler, but some was quite infectious. I think with a better lead singer they could’ve had hits.
The ones with the “Valerie” singing lead show the potential.

The Archies follow up to Sugar, Sugar was Jingle Jangle. It didn't do as well on the charts but I still have the 45RPM. Ron Dante did not sing on that one.

R5 the single ‘DARE’ was huge for Gorillaz. It was high on the charts for what felt like years (it may well have been years in the U.K., cba to check right now). I’d say the same for their other singles ‘Tomorrow Comes Today’ (my personal favourite), ‘19-2000’, ‘5/4’, ‘Rock The House’, ‘Kids With Guns’, Clint Eastwood’, ‘Dirty Harry’, ‘El Mañana’, ‘On Melancholy Hill’, and more recently ‘DoYaThing’, ‘Empire Ants’, ‘Stylo’, ‘Rhinestone Eyes’, ‘Momentz’, ‘We Got The Power’, and ‘Magic City’.
They’re still going strong as a group, btw. Their last album SONG MACHINE was fucking amazing, with tracks released last year such as ‘Aries’, ‘Désolé’, and ‘Momentary Bliss’ doing very well. Their recent video for ‘The Lost Chord’ almost broke the Internet, for its references to fanlire.
What’s so funny about the concept, is that it began in 1998-9 as a joke project, meant as a criticism by Albarn & Hewlett to lampoon the way pop bands are so manufactured and forced to act like cartoon characters to sell records. However, that backfired somewhat when people responded with overwhelming interest and positivity to the satirical characters and the excellent poptronica that came from them, so now 23 years later they’re more legit than most 3D bands (excuse the pun).
