Subtitles or dub dilemma

I’ve started watching Alice in Borderland on Netflix and it starts running in the dubbed version. Why does dubbing always sound so goofy? Like they got retards to do the dubbing.

So I switched to sub as I usually do snd as usual I’m sitting here reading the fucking show.

Which do you hate less—subtitles or dubbing?

I go with dubbed so I don’t miss any of the visuals as I try to read the subtitles.

Subtitles don't bother me at all, as I typically watch TV with closed captions turned on. I hate anything dubbed, When the lips and the words don't quite end simultaneously, it's so distracting.

by Anonymousreply 2December 27, 2020 10:56 PM

I hate dubbed because the characters never emote properly and the voice acting is ALWAYS horrible unless playing a video game... sometims.

by Anonymousreply 3December 27, 2020 10:57 PM

The only thing I watch that's dubbed is anime.

Everything else I watch with subtitles. Maybe I'm OCD but the words not matching the lips bugs the fuck out of me. Plus it's ridiculous how many times dubbing sounds like it came from the mouth of a porn star or surfer dude. I did recently catch a bit of a Chinese movie that was dubbed and one of the Chinese gangsters was dubbed by someone who sounded just like Michael Caine which was absurd.

Subtitles don't bother me as I got turned onto foreign films when I was in high school. I'm a quick reader so I don't miss anything.

My Netflix account knows better than to start playing dubbed versions.

Why not both? Turn subtitles on so you can read the original dialogue while listening to the dub.

Dubbing literally destroys the film/TV show and make them unwatchable. Nuance, emphasis, tone, what the character actually said in the different language are all lost and detract.

I'be noticed that Netflix is doing this more and more.

by Anonymousreply 6December 27, 2020 10:59 PM

R5 Then you'd notice that the subtitles and dubbing don't match and that's a whole other level of distraction.

by Anonymousreply 7December 27, 2020 11:01 PM

Another vote for subtitles. You pretty much remove the actors performance in a dubbed version. I like hearing the sound of the actors' voices even if I don't understand the words they are speaking.

by Anonymousreply 8December 27, 2020 11:02 PM

I don't know how anyone could stomach dubbing. Sounds/feels so unnatural, sometimes even comically so.

The worst are the ones where a voice actor deepens his voice for a "macho" character. Then another voice actor goes mousy for a nerdy character. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 9December 27, 2020 11:04 PM

Dubbing makes everything look cheap. Subtitles keeps the integrity of the original. I don’t see a problem with subtitles unless you have trouble reading. I don’t miss the action on the screen, in fact subtitles can sometimes enhance the viewing.

by Anonymousreply 10December 27, 2020 11:04 PM

I’m watching Diablero and I’m enjoying the dubbing. It’s comical. “Oh, daddy, I saw you posted the demon on Instagram.”

Why wouldn’t they match? The voice actors are reading from the subtitles.

by Anonymousreply 12December 27, 2020 11:08 PM

R12 They're not. You can have both the dubbing and subtitles turned on at the same time and you'll sometimes see that the dialogue is quite different.

by Anonymousreply 13December 27, 2020 11:14 PM

What is Alice in Borderland? Is this an Alice in Wonderland remake?

by Anonymousreply 14December 27, 2020 11:19 PM

I watch lots of foreign language films and I always go with subtitles, because I’m literate.

R14 Alice in Borderland is a Japanese science fiction suspense-thriller drama streaming television series based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso. So it’s like Saw?

by Anonymousreply 17December 27, 2020 11:29 PM

No.

But if you want something Japanese and fucked up, check out Netflix's upcoming anime High-Rise Invasion which is released in January.

I am always surprised at how many people have not taught themselves to read subtitles. The technique is to focus on the whole picture while reading the words in the periphery. Not hard once you learn, but when people say that they cannot take in the visuals if they read subtitles---I wonder why they don't improve their technique, since it does increase one's pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 20December 28, 2020 1:20 AM

Dubbing is horrible, it has to be subtitles for me.

by Anonymousreply 21December 28, 2020 1:27 AM

I watched dubbed. I have gotten used the clumsiness over the years. It lends a certain charm.

by Anonymousreply 22December 28, 2020 7:34 AM

Worse than dubbing and subtitles of course are remakes of perfectly good foreign films. I hate that the most. I didn’t see it and it stars some great actors like Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams, but was another version of After the Wedding really necessary? I guess they changed the genders of the characters so maybe there would at least be some individual merit.

by Anonymousreply 23December 28, 2020 7:48 AM

Anyone who doesn’t read subtitles that isn’t visually impaired is lazy and stupid. Grow up.

by Anonymousreply 24December 28, 2020 8:00 AM

Adults use subtitles.

by Anonymousreply 25December 28, 2020 8:00 AM

With House of Flowers I watch it dubbed, because the voice acting and lines are so bad it's funny. Anything else I watch with subtitles, as reading is just basic level pattern matching by your brain, it's not exactly hard as said above to follow the dialog without losing track of the visuals, you soon not notice.

by Anonymousreply 26December 28, 2020 8:26 AM

Subtitles almost always. I watch some Japanese anime, and I generally prefer to hear the authentic voices. I don't find the subtitles distracting, and you generally establish a routine of your eyes flicking briefly to the subtitles. I make one exception: the anime "Howl's Moving Castle." The American cast dubbing the voices is stellar, and Billy Crystal as the fire demon is a hoot.
