Pink or apricot

by Anonymousreply 7December 25, 2020 7:26 AM

It looks like she gave the dress to the Met's Costume Institute.

House of Balenciaga. Evening dress, fall/winter 1965–66. Pale pink gown of pin-dotted silk gazar with ostrich feathers.

For some reason, it looks a little better in a color photo.

R18, Vogue magazine may consider Jayne's dress iconic but I think it looks silly. It's really too much with all those feathers.

Excellent choice, R19.

I would prefer the Balenciaga dress in white or black, it’s a bit of a play on Swan Lake. I don’t like the apricot color.

by Anonymousreply 26December 25, 2020 8:08 PM

Madge

Then again a lot of actresses and singers deliberately go over the top to get the attention of the press. They're not trying to be elegant.

[quote]Sorry too, Babe Paley looks fantastic.

I might have pedestrian tastes but the top part of the dress looks like some irregular stiff fortification. I also don't like the V-shaped waist. Maybe if I could get a better look at the dress I'd like it more. There seems to be just that one photograph from that one angle.

by Anonymousreply 28December 25, 2020 8:14 PM

Thanks for the info, R51. Do you know of any outfits that Mrs. Wrightsman or Mrs. Mellon wore that were fashion fails?

by Anonymousreply 53January 11, 2021 9:35 AM

Jayne's dress looks entirely appropriate for the mid-60s. I think she died in the last couple of years (remembering NYT obit). She was in her late 90s, I think.

by Anonymousreply 54January 11, 2021 9:35 PM

Yes, she died in April 2019 at the age of 99. I was surprised to learn she was born in Flint, Michigan but I'm sure it wasn't as economically depressed in 1919 as it is now.

R59, Cristobal Balenciaga was a great designer. Many of his clothes were very beautiful and elegant but, as you can see, some of his creations were really out there, eg. R58.

[quote]Faux pas is how you spell both the plural and the singular form of the phrase. However, we do make a distinction in the pronunciation—the singular faux pas is pronounced [foh pah], but the plural faux pas is pronounced with a “z” at the end—[foh pahz].

[quote]R65 Is that pic right after one of his bankruptcies, 'cause that tux looks like a Macy's special?

I found it. The dress at R65 is from the 2004 Met Gala. The theme was "Dangerous Liaisons". It's a black satin dress, with pleat details and a waist-cinching corset.

Wikipedia says Trump did declare bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009. Maybe he was penny pinching at the time.
