Christmas Tipping $$

Do you tip the trash collectors? Postal workers? I give the garbage guys $20, Recycle $20 and the lovely lady who cleans my tiny apartment $200. How about you?

by Anonymousreply 19December 23, 2020 7:19 PM

Oddly, enough I was pondering this exact same thing this morning on my walk. Garbage guys, postal workers earn more more money than I do. Plus, I don't get tipped for doing my job. As has been written plenty of times, the tipping culture has gotten out of control in the USA.

Yup, I'm definitely the Scrooge in this scenario.

I reserve tips for those who give happy endings.

by Anonymousreply 2December 23, 2020 2:57 PM

How about the tip of my foot in your ass!!

by Anonymousreply 3December 23, 2020 3:01 PM

No.

by Anonymousreply 4December 23, 2020 3:02 PM

I'm sure there will be much less or no tipping this year since many do not have jobs. And it's probably going to get worse.

I am wondering, how do you tip the garbage guys, so you sit there watching out your window for them to arrive and do you run outside in your caftan and chase them down the street waving a $20 bill calling wait, wait, wait? Or do you put it in a nice card and tap it to the trash container? Curious minds want to know.

by Anonymousreply 6December 23, 2020 3:38 PM

I tape it to the trash container. But I walked out to the recycle guys and handed it to them, kaftan flowing behind me. They all thanked me and wished me a merry xmas. I don't care how much they make Mr. Scrooge at R1. I can't imagine hanging off the back of a truck in rain and snow tossing smelly garbage into a truck all day long.

Postal workers are not allowed to accept tips (although mine practically begs for a tip with her card).

r3 Thanks, Red.

OP sounds about right.

And I put on jeans in lieu of caftan to thank the trash guys

everyone makes more money than I do but I still tip. The only people I have to tip are the garbage men and my mailman. I have a lot of gardens so I have a lot of garbage in the summer too and I tip the garbage men then too. You Always get better service if you tip them. No matter how much money a person makes they should be tipped. It makes them feel that they are doing things right even if they don't need the money. I watched the owner of a very successful butcher shop get tipped and his whole face lit up. If you can squeeze it out you should always tip.

No Christmas tipping this year

by Anonymousreply 12December 23, 2020 5:23 PM

Normally I didn’t tip the UPS guy but I gave him $20 and a hot chocolate gift basket. He’s been here a lot this year, always brings my packages to the door and rings the doorbell so I know I have packages.

I still get a printed NYT every Sunday and the driver leaves me a card to mail him a tip. I sent him $20.

by Anonymousreply 13December 23, 2020 5:26 PM

I gave $50 to the postman and plan to give $40 each to the two trash guys.

by Anonymousreply 14December 23, 2020 5:29 PM

Let’s hear from our brethren outside of the USA.

by Anonymousreply 15December 23, 2020 6:25 PM

R15 I hear the sound of crickets from distant shores regarding their tipping practices.

Crickets, that's all. Except the Canadians. They're yelling at us from over the border saying, "Stop, you're spoiling it for the rest of us."

by Anonymousreply 16December 23, 2020 6:30 PM

I only tip people who work for tips.

by Anonymousreply 17December 23, 2020 6:31 PM

I gave my cleaning lady another $200 even though she hasn't cleaned for me since the pandemic began.

She has a family and needs the money. I've given her about $1000 overall. I can;t imagine how she's going to get through this without help

I would imagine that tipping is more of an American thing.

In Europe they get paid a livable wage
