New Edition may tour in 2021 with NKOTB

There will be no tours in 2021. [italic]Maybe[/italic] 2022

New Kids On The Block are not "pure pop". They were heavily R&B and hip-hop influenced from the start. In fact their manager and producer Maurice Starr (who was originally New Edition's manager) shopped NKOTB's songs to R&B stations and had them perform at majority black venues and parties. Their first album was literally a New Edition album with the same synth-funk sound. When "Please Don't Go Girl" hit the radio airwaves, it was originally on R&B stations and most people thought they were black. When pop stations picked it up, that's when NKOTB really started to explode in mainstream popularity. And when their music videos hit the airwaves like "The Right Stuff" and "I'll Be Loving You Forever". However by the time of "Step by Step", they became more pop-oriented and began focusing more on their predominately white girl fanbase. NKOTB and Starr were both initially surprised by how embraced they were by white audiences and said the idea never crossed their minds.

This isn't uncommon either. Pink was originally targeted towards the black audiences while under the black label LaFace and most thought she was black (she even looked like a light-skinned chick from the hood with her hairstyle and dress style). Teena Marie, Madonna, Rick Astley, Paula Abdul and more recently Sam Smith were all thought to be black and were played on R&B stations but when the music videos hit, it was clear they weren't.

And also, "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and "The Right Stuff" were both heavily influenced by Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and "You Can Be Mine". I'm surprised Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis didn't call that out but then again they were copying Prince's sound...

I thought they only had an issue with Bobby brown. Also, NKOTB has done package tours for the last decade and they have been very successful. The last one they did was with Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, Naughty by Nature and Salt n Pepa.

NKOTB seem well-liked in the black community. There was controversy in their prime about them profiting off of black music which even got a LA Times article but NKOTB argued their love of the sound was authentic and they grew up in mixed neighborhoods and bussed to black schools in Boston. Jordan and Danny were breakdancers and Donnie was an aspiring rapper. Jordan and Jon Knight had an adopted black brother and actually witnessed him being called racial slurs. Only Joey came from a very white middle-class environment and clearly had a more theatre voice. He added later on.

Have they consulted the law firm of Bell, Biv, and DeVoe?

Jagged Edge, Blackstreet, Jodeci, Boyz II Men, The Boys, All-For-One, Soul 4 Real, Hi-Five and Mint Condition were all talented too.

Package tours are very smart. Some of them feature meet and greets though not sure if those will continue in a post-COVID world.

The "Washed Up Tour" might happen as long as they haven't died of old age.

Back in the day, they could have performed on " The Love Boat."

Even farther back, they could've performed on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Jonathan Knight is gay and has been common law married for years. He took his partners last name too but they still haven't formally married yet. Jonathan looks so much hotter now.

Jordan seemed gay to everyone but he was just a vain pretty boy who probably likes the male attention. He's married to a woman.

TLC wants to tour with The Spice Girls. Fitting as they were the two biggest girl groups of the 90s. Destiny's Child was honestly more early 2000s.

Chilli and Spices....makes sense.

Maybe 702 could join the tour, also. There are so many underrated black girl groups, but all anyone seems to remember is Destiny's.

J.S. are another, an excellent duo of black women who went on to sing backup for and marry members of the Isley Bros. Would be cool to see them tour some of their music.

They can advertise them as Old Edition and Old Kids on the Block!

Jordan Knight's solo album is better than all of NKOTB's albums combined. He just waited too damn long to go solo, he was a dad and looked out of place with the teen pop/TRL explosion in the late 90s.

I haven't heard any of the tracks from NKOTB's last cd, but the song "Single" from their penultimate cd was surprisingly good. It featured Ne-Yo.
